fags and blacks are not the same its a disrespectful comparison the fact that two social groups experience discrimination in different degrees does not mean they are one in the same and I would stop using that line if I were you
you have a very subjective argument that requires moral relativity to mean anything. mine is solid and not subjective at all. the word nigga offends people, so does faggot.

70sav's point was that if you know a word's offensive you shouldn't use it. nobody was even talking to you at all, so maybe you should stay out of this shit especially if you can't discuss it within the bounds of the discussion we're having.

you can feel how you want about this shit, anyone can feel however they want.

people that say nigga can feel it's alright just like people that say faggot can feel it's alright to say it. the hypocrisy of it is static and unbiased though, you can't argue with me on this because i'm not making an argument, i'm making a point.

My point is still proven based on foul mouth and antilabs reasoning, you shouldn't expect someone not to be dumped on and chased after if they use an offensive word not in their acceptable circle.

i agree. your point is well proven, if people are antagonized by someone's action they can respond in whatever fashion suits their sensibility/comfort level.

peep i said this a couple weeks ago:

i agree with him 100%. the only thing i'd add from a realist perspective is the following...

anyone can say anything they want. we all have mouths and can do that. something thoughtful people should be mindful of is the way certain words make people feel, or what saying certain words can incite in others. there's two solid reasons for people who are not black not say "nigga," that negate any rationalization regarding where someone grew up, or how many times they've been to jail.

› how the word makes people who the word applies to feel
› what you saying the word can incite in people to do to you

if you're concerned with either of those things after you have realized that they're both real and legitimate reasons not to say the shit will dictate whether or not you say it. this principal applies to any word that objectifies a people, regardless of how the person means it. it applies to words like, "nigga" but it also applies to words like faggot. it doesn't matter how the person saying it means it, if they aren't black, their perspective is irrelevant as far as rationalization goes. but if they wanna say it and don't give a fuck about making people uncomfortable, or the consequences of what happens when you make the wrong person uncomfortable, then go ahead and say that shit and deal w/it when shit pop.

just as an honest question, because i'm curious. do you use the word faggot? many of the same principals you've outlined above apply to the word faggot, so i'd assume not, since you seem like a rational and thoughtful person. but ionno.
To my recollection, I haven't used that word In my adult life. I have absolutely no problem with Gay people. They do their own thing and I do mine. Why should I care what they do in their private lives. But on the real, there are some glaring differences in the usage of the word N*GGA and the word F*GGOT By Non-Blacks & Non-Gays. I mean I cant remember EVER hearing a Non-Gay running around talkin' about, "What up my F*GGOT!" or "Aye! Yo thats my F*GGOT right there!".

I think you get my point...

good question. there's many words that are offensive that im sure some blacks that say nigga would use. so alot of these arguments are hypocritical. its an argument that everyone can have an opinion on, but no one (especially on this board) is calling the shot. straight up.
Sorry but the "hypocritical" argument doesn't fly with me... As I just showed you, the entire context and usage of the word N*GGA (as opposed to N*GGER) by Non-Blacks is so unique and unparalleled in the english language, that I can easily ask you to give me an example of a situation where a Black people use a racially offensive term, within that self same context, and be confident in your inability to do so...

70sav, i say faggot quite a bit. i know not to, and try not to say it in situations where someone could be offended, but overall it's a word that i use. or i say some shit like "wtf that shit is gay" all the time. but i recognize it's not right and to be cautious as to not alienate either people i know or don't know in situations where it could.

but i have to say, the usage differences aren't relevant to this discussion though. your initial point was that if someone is unaware that a word may be offensive to a group of people they should stop once they were aware. if that is your stance on the n-word, it should also be applicable to other words that offend people regardless of the usage context. the operative in your argument was is its potential to offend and alienate people regardless of the person speaking its intent, rationale, background or explanation for using it.
...which you say you live up to that standard. good job.

I agree with you, and the aforementioned point stands on its own merit. I don't condone offending Gays or alienating ANY group of people for that matter. When you are a person who is confident in his or herself it just isn't necessary. The relevance of pointing out the usage difference in this discussion was to drive home a point to those who seem to be lost on this idea, by giving them a bit of perspective. Sometimes a sparked imagination
can ignite an enlightened realization.

And so, to any Non-Blacks out there reading this who still choose to use the word N*GGA... Heres a little more of that perspective... I want you to imagine you're in a store standing in line behind a very, very, old lady with gray hair, and she just so happens to be a member of YOUR racial demographic.
In walk a couple of black guys (or girls if it suits you) spewing a racial epithet back and forth amongst each other that is known to be offensive to YOUR racial demographic.
Although these guys/girls are using this term in endearment between each other the old lady from YOUR racial demographic, doesn't seem to understand this and is clearly offended.
She turns to you with a tear in her eye and says to you "Are you just gonna stand there and let them degrade us like that?"

Well, I hope that never happens to you. And I hope you never have to figure out what to do in a situation like that...

most very, very old black ladys dont like the word nigga period. it is offensive to them. they had to live through nigger talk. then went through it. they dont sit there and justify the use of the word by saying "its ours", not that you do that. i see what your saying and i understand the point your trying to make, but not all blacks are on the same page. the "younger" cats grew up with it and is apart of their vocab. that doesnt make it right, and that doesnt mean that older blacks shouldnt get offended. if anything, by blacks using the word, they're being the most offensive to the older generation of blacks that were way more closer to the hate and the initial menaing of the word. kind of like "younger" mexicans have no problem using the word "wetback". but most older generation mexicans find it very offensive, even if it is our own people using it. offensive is offensive.

again, i see your point, and im aware of that perspective, but you lose me when your argument is about being "offended". not that you cant be offended, its just very hypocritical.

i got you tho.....

LOL@This white guy trying to teach black people about...black people. Nice generalization you got going on in your point..

The word "nigga" comes from the older generation, it's not some new word that the youngins use to piss the older folks off. The direct result of these ignorant kids and rappers using the word so much today is because of those older folks who passed it down to them for generations.

I don't use the word around anyone, I definitely don't use the word around non-blacks so I don't (or shouldn't) have to hear the word being used around me. Yet, I still manage to catch people saying it. The funny thing is when idiots DO use the word around me I always get that look of "approval" like "You're not offended, right?" because they know it's wrong.

I also don't get the assumption that people in California/West Coast are the only ones to give non blacks a pass for saying it. It's the same shit in Chicago, New York, etc. Ignorance isn't strictly limited to California...
