Sucks for Paul...and I agree Pavlik's stock has dropped dramatically, not so much for losing to living legend B-Hop, but for the bullshit he's been pulling recently.

I feel bad for P-Will because as an opponent, he's such a high risk-low reward fighter. The guy will give almost anyone from '47-60 problems, and even arguably '68.

I really enjoy watching him fight, but it doesn't seem like anyone is interested in taking that risk.

I can't really knock Pavlik. Staph infection, not in shape, etc.
If you aren't going to bring your A game and you don't think you will win, then don't fight.

I rather see Paul fight someone else than a shell in Pavlik right now.
Let him do what he needs to do, and come back when he is ready and strong.

That's how I look at it...

Why isn't he in shape though? If you're not in shape then why agree to fight in Oct?

If it was just a staph infection I wouldn't blame him either, but man it's not just this. What about his fight with Sergio Mora? He canceled the fight due to injury only later to admit he was never injured. Plus his negative attitude as of late, the assault claims, and all of the rumors of him fuckin up getting drunk and having to go to rehab, etc. People in his own team are even publicly talking about his behavior, that is not a good sign.

All this adds up. Seems to me his is rapidly declining. Hope I'm wrong cuz he's good for boxing, just my opinion based on what I've been hearing.

Bernard Hopkins may step in for Pavlik......

Insider Notebook: Hopkins vs Williams?

By Robert Morales

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, listened carefully when he was being told that fellow promoter Dan Goossen did not plan on waiting for Kelly Pavlik to fight Paul Williams in November or December.

Pavlik, the middleweight champion, on Monday postponed his Oct. 3 fight with Williams because of a recurring injury to his left hand. And Goossen on Tuesday said he really wants to get Williams back in the ring in October because he has not fought since April.

Schaefer was asked if "Sugar" Shane Mosley - a welterweight champion who fights under the Golden Boy banner - might be able to step in and take Pavlik's spot against Williams - a former welterweight champion and current interim junior middleweight champion.

First of all, Schaefer didn't think it would be wise for Williams to come back down to welterweight after he had been training for a middleweight fight. He also said Mosley really doesn't want to move up in weight.

"So why try to have Paul Williams do something which I think would be difficult to do in such a short period of time and try to drop to 147?" Schaefer said, referring to the welterweight limit. "If I would be Paul Williams' promoter, I would really focus more on those other eight classes."

Williams has fought as high as middleweight twice, although he weighed only 157 for both fights - three below the middleweight limit. But Goossen has always said that Williams could go as high as the 168-pound super middleweight class.

This gave Schaefer an intriguing idea.

"In case a Pavlik fight falls through, the fact is I have one name in mind and that would be Bernard Hopkins," Schaefer said. "Bernard physically can't make it below 170."

Schaefer said that he has had talks for a fight between Hopkins and cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek. Schaefer said a fight between Hopkins and the winner of the Chad Dawson-Glen Johnson light heavyweight title fight Nov. 7 is another possibility.

But a fight between the 44-year-old phenom Hopkins and Williams would probably bring the most fanfare.

"I would have to discuss it with Bernard," Schaefer said. "If I can get Bernard to 170 and if Paul Williams can get to 170 and take on the great Bernard Hopkins, that would be more of a call for Dan Goossen to make rather than Paul Williams having to chop off a leg to make 147.

"I think it's better to put some rocks in your pants rather than chop off a leg."

Mosley: Bring on Anyone

Mosley spoke with BoxingScene.com on Tuesday. He was asked about Williams.

“At this point, I'm not even discussing who I'm going to fight," Mosley said. "It doesn't really matter who I fight. Richard Schaefer is going to put the numbers together. Whatever makes the best sense, that's who I'm going to fight."

Mosley was pressed about Williams.

"I would step into the ring with anybody Richard picks," Mosley said. "I will fight anybody at this point."

Well, as Schaefer said, a fight between Mosley and Williams is not likely to happen. Besides, Schaefer indicated he is close to making a fight between Mosley and either fellow champion Andre Berto or former champion Joshua Clottey.

"I have had conversations with both of their promoters - Lou DiBella for Berto and Bob Arum for Clottey," Schaefer said Tuesday. "And I'm having discussions, frankly, as we speak this morning with HBO as it relates to the licensing fee so we can finalize a deal with either one of those two.

"And I've been having discussions with Richard Sturm (an executive at MGM Grand in Las Vegas) for Dec. 5 at MGM."

Damn, 170 seems like a pretty big jump, but if anyone has the frame for it its P-Will.

I like P-Will if that fight gets made. I just can't see Bernard at this stage in his career being able to keep his work rate high enough to win rounds. He is a living legend, and a southpaw killer, but Paul and his 100+ punches a round coupled with the fact that Bernard might only land 20-30 punches per round or less...

I think P-Will would come away with a decision victory. Would be an interesting fight though.

p-will wont have 100+ punchers per round against 'Nard. Hops is too crafty for that shit, he'll tie up, he'll headbutt, he will use lateral movement, he'll get physical and nasty with Williams. And that overhand right counter at 170 pounds could very well spell disaster for Williams, it's a big gamble on his part if he wants to fight at 170 (but he already said he's willing to fight at 168 so whats 2 pounds to him?).

Carlos Quintana beat Williams the first time by using lateral movement and fighting smart/tactical and counter punching. If Quintana could do it I don't see why Hopkins couldn't.

I'm a fan of Williams so I don't like this fight. Hopkins will eat his soul.

Good points 2-0.

He might not have 100+ punches, but you know. Calzaghe won his fight with B-Hop in the same way that I think Paul can, and might. Simply throwing more (and thus landing more) punches.

Hopkins is as cagey and crafty as they come, but he can definitely be hit, and with the weird angles that Paul throws from, I think he'll sneak enough through to get the W.

Calzaghe is also more talented than Williams though, he's a completely different animal. And I still thought Nard deserved the nod or at worst a decision. Calzaghe also fought all of his career at 168 and was truly a natural light heavyweight.

While Williams is a freak of a nature, we still haven't seen him take a solid punch at 160 let alone 170. I just don't know if he could be able to survive the same overhand right that knocked down Calzaghe and Tarver, both guys who rarely ever go down (and both guys that are naturally heavier than P-Will).

And I sorta disagree with the point of "hopkins can definitely be hit." I don't think that's true at all, he rarely ever gets hit flush, most everything is blocked, dodged or partially blocked. In fact someone took the time to watch calzaghe vs hopkins in slow motion and they recorded each and every clean punch calzaghe landed on hopkins. Do you know how many he landed total? 17 punches. And compubox credited calzaghe for 200!! So at best Williams might be able to fool the judges by throwing a lot of blocked punches but he wont be able to hit bernard flush.

In addition we have never seen what Williams looks like against a crafty vet like Hopkins. He looked good against Winky, but Winky's style was all wrong for Williams cuz he just stood in front of him and covered up. Hopkins has some of the best lateral movement in the game, he moves and moves and moves and makes his opponent chase and then sets up traps (like the right hand that knocked down calzaghe refer to video below). If Hopkins is moving Williams cannot throw. I think Williams will get confused as fuck and you'll end up seeing the Williams that fought Quintana the first time, a guy that simply looked outclassed with a busted up eye.

Pavlik-Williams: Doctor Clears Kelly To Train on 10/10

By Mark Vester

According to promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank, WBO/WBC middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik has been cleared by a doctor to start training on October 10. The timeline would give Pavlik the right amount of time to get ready for a December 5 title defense against Paul Williams. The fight would take place at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City and HBO will televise.

Arum told Michael Rosenthal of the Ring Online that a doctor's report was sent to Williams' promoter Dan Goossen on Wednesday.

"Things are looking a lot better now," Goossen told Rosenthal.

Unbelievable.

Kelly Pavlik vs Paul Williams is Postponed Once Again

By Mark Vester

According to the Youngstown Vindicator , WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik is unable to move forward with his December 5 clash with Paul Williams. The fight was previously scheduled for October, and postponed due to a staph infection suffered by Pavlik and later rescheduled for the December date. Pavlik's trainer Jack Loew says the staph infection has not gone away as expected and his fighter is unable to close his left hand.

"He's trying," said Loew. "He's been running, he's been trying to train in the gym. He's trying to shadow box with one hand, hit the speed bag with one hand. ... I've been trying to keep it a secret but it's not going great and I'm not going to fool anybody any longer."

They are trying to reschedule the fight for January 23 but Williams' side may not accept another postponement.
