Williams has never been hit clean by a real middleweight puncher and that's the kind of guy he's fighting. If he can take Pavlik's punch without getting hurt or take it good enough to not slow down his punch output then he wins.

Probably HBO. HBO likes both of these guys so I'm sure they put up a good amount to make this fight happen and they know it won't sell on PPV. The reason Pavlik's most recent fight was on PPV is because HBO wouldn't put it on.

Paul should be unbeatable with his reach and how many punches he throws per round.......But Pavlic is nice 2....I like Kelly's attitude seems like a class act and respects the sport....This should be a hell of a fight......

I agree with naner I think this fight all depends on if Williams can take Pavlik's punch or not, since he's never been hit by a big puncher at 160 before. If he can take pavlik's best, then I see williams winning by decision. He throws nonstop punches from all sorts of angles you wouldn't think is possible, he swarms his opponents.

I would love to see williams actually use his long ass arms for once and box smart from the outside, I think that would be his best strategy against kelly but thats just not the kind of fighter williams is.

Finally Paul Williams is stepping up, got really sick of him fighting smaller fighters. I think Pavlik is gonna whoop on him though.

Winky Wright?

And it's not his fault he's tall and skinny. Shit, look at Tommy Hearns. He was the same size as Paul Williams and he fought at welterweight for much of his career (and also went on to middleweight & LHW as he got old).

Williams by decision. I think he outworks Pavlik in this fight, though like mentioned, at any given second he can get obliterated by a punch from a true middleweight puncher.

Hey easy on the Williams backing...
Let's not forget who the champ is as well as the true MW.

I doubt Pav's camp is thinking "KO or bust".

All I know is that this fight is going to answer a lot of questions, on both sides, whatever the outcome.

Pavlik's staph infection postpones bout

Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik's Oct. 3 title defense against Paul Williams was postponed Monday because Pavlik is dealing with a nagging staph infection on the middle of his left hand, promoter Top Rank said.

A news conference in New York city to formally announce the fight was scheduled for Tuesday, but was called off Monday afternoon after a number of people involved in the fight had already arrived in New York, where they received the news.

The date for the much-anticipated fight -- which took weeks to finalize after a brutal negotiation -- to be rescheduled is up in the air, but the dates under consideration are Nov. 21 and Dec. 5, Top Rank president Todd duBoef told ESPN.com.

Top Rank and HBO both were OK with Nov. 21, as was host site Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

However, Dan Goossen, who promotes Williams (37-1, 27 KOs), also promotes super middleweight contender Andre Ward. Goossen is promoting Ward's title opportunity against Mikkel Kessler on the same night in one of the bouts that is part of HBO rival Showtime's Super Six World Boxing Classic.

"As you are aware, we've just learned of Pavlik's decision to cancel the press conference and thus the fight and we will evaluate where we go from here," Goossen told ESPN.com in an e-mail.

Goossen has yet to agree to Pavlik-Williams for Nov. 21, telling ESPN.com in a separate e-mail that if Pavlik was fighting Nov. 21, "I would be very interested in finding out who he's fighting."

Pavlik co-manager Cameron Dunkin, who flew to New York on Monday morning, was headed to Pavlik's hometown of Youngstown, Ohio, Monday afternoon to meet with Pavlik and his team.

"His knuckle is infected," Dunkin told ESPN.com just before boarding his flight. "It's all infected. It's worse than it was. He has to go on an IV drip starting in the morning and do it for the next couple of weeks to get it cleaned out. It needs medical attention. He can't put a glove on."

Dunkin said the issue has given Pavlik (35-1, 31 KOs) problems for the past "five or six months." He said Pavlik had stitches removed a few days ago and was due to see his doctor on Monday afternoon to be cleared before flying to New York for the news conference.

"Instead, he goes in there and it's worse," Dunkin said. "The kid missed three doctor's appointments and when he showed up it was worse. I'm going there to get this all straightened out, meet with [trainer] Jack [Loew], his father [co-manager Mike Pavlik] and to talk to the doctor. This should have been healed a week ago."

Top Rank chief Bob Arum was on his way to the airport in Las Vegas when he got a call from Dunkin telling him the fight had to be postponed.

"According to the doctor, Kelly hasn't been making his appointments. So what do you want me to do," Arum said. "They tell me it will heal and he'll be cleared in the next few weeks. It is what it is. What am I supposed to do? I have absolutely no emotion."

This isn't the first time Pavlik has had issues with the infection. In May, Top Rank said the infection was the reason a scheduled June 27 defense against former junior middleweight titlist Sergio Mora was canceled. Pavlik, who was in a contract dispute with Top Rank at the time, and his team dispute that the infection was the reason.

Pavlik hasn't fought since a dominant ninth-round knockout of Marco Antonio Rubio in his second title defense on Feb. 21.

Williams, a former two-time welterweight titleholder, owns an interim junior middleweight belt, but fought at middleweight on April 11. He scored a near-shutout decision victory against former undisputed junior middleweight champion Winky Wright.

Still with that staph infection?
I've had one before and it sucks ass. He has to go on anti biotics and they make you extremely weak. Then you have to follow up with pro biotics once it's done. I dropped the meds and did it naturally but it does take a lot longer to heal but at least I didn't have the side effects of the meds.

He should be fine, but he needs to get on meds since he's pressed for time.

Rising and Falling: Boxing's volatile stock market

by SC on Aug 18, 2009

It seems like Kelly Pavlik just cannot buck the trend his reputation has been on for the past 10 months. All respect is due for Pavlik taking a very dangerous fight with Paul Williams, but they didn't even manage to get to the official press conference before Pavlik pulled out with staph infection amid rumors that he's simply not in shape. I like Kelly Pavlik; I'm a Kelly Pavlik fan. But his reputation has taken massive hits since Bernard Hopkins took the "0" off his record in October 2008. Since Hopkins dominated him, he's fought just once, beating Marco Antonio Rubio, and has pulled out of two fights, the first of which he blames on Top Rank.

If he's injured, then he's injured, and nothing can be done about it now, though Pavlik's own manager is placing the blame squarely on Pavlik himself, saying he missed doctor appointments and has been dealing with the condition for "five or six" months. But if he's just out of shape, they shouldn't have gone with October 3 in the first place. I don't buy into any of the "local" rumors about Pavlik, really, but you cannot deny that he's looking less and less like the blue collar, working man's hero with the big right hand. He's being seen by many now as a primadonna that can't keep his career in order. See what I mean? It turns on you fast.

Paul Williams To Return on October 3, Without Pavlik

By Robert Morales

Dan Goossen on Tuesday was not a happy camper. A day earlier it was announced that middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik had a reoccurrence of an injury in his left hand that caused him to postpone his Oct. 3 middleweight title fight with Paul Williams, who is promoted by Goossen.

One of the dates mentioned for a possible re-scheduling of the fight is Nov. 21. Another is Dec. 5. Either way, it doesn't appear this fight will take place on either date. When asked if Williams would wait around for a fight past October, Goossen was emphatic in his reply.

"No," he said to BoxingScene.com. "I want Paul Williams to fight first and foremost in October. His last fight was April 11 and I think it's imperative that we put him back into the ring. We have never had any problem fighting Kelly Pavlik. We don't have a problem in the future fighting Kelly Pavlik.

"But we certainly want to make sure the erratic behavior he (Pavlik) has had the past 6 to 12 months isn't an overall (indicator) of what's happening. In other words, it doesn't make sense moving forward with a fight that is never going to happen."

Goossen also said he wasn't thrilled that Top Rank Inc., which promotes Pavlik, began discussing alternative dates with the media without first discussing them with him.

So, Goossen was asked, what now?

"I don't know," Goossen said. "Those are the things that I'm working on currently with Paul and his managers. We're going to have something relevant as to a direction we're going in shortly. In the interim, Kelly Pavlik seems to have some problems that certainly need more than a press release to resolve."
