so now a days you have to go platinum to have a great album...NOT REALLY! theres alot of garbage ass albums that are platinum bc of one song hits on a garbage album. illmatic was a classic ass album. theres alot of great albums that dont go platinum...that doesnt mean they're garbage. IMO, once again...IMO!
and for the record...nas didnt start the beef, jay z started it bc with all the albums he was selling, the streets (ny) still thought nas was better then jay-z. and what do you do to get to the top...battle the top...what jay-z tried to do when he put out the take over!! 94 was a different era in terms of sales - a lot less hip-hop albums went platinum at that time than did around 2000
Also, Illmatic isn't the type of album that will sell 10 million copies, for the simple reason that it is too deep and has no tracks of the type that stay on top of the charts for months
The fact that it had the status of a classic almost immediately after it came out and still is among the top 10 albums ever is more than enough
