I just had a conversation with an A&R Rep from Sony, and last week I had a conversation with an A&R Rep from Jive. Both of them in conversation expressed that they do still keep track of the Bay Area as a region. Both expressed interest in signing an artist or group from the Bay Area. Catch?
Both A&R's asked me if there was anything making waves that "WASN'T" Hyphy music? They wanted to know if anyone was doing Hip Hop or if anyone was doing Gangsta/Reality Music with Lyrical Skill behind it.
Straight up, both A&R's mentioned the same artist that they are keeping an eye on. That artist is AP.9 and both A&R's mentioned the same group that they are keeping an eye on. The group asked me not to post who they are. The are talking to the labels now and want to wait and see what really happens first. The group isn't a new group though. The are a foundation in the music out here.
What does all this mean? Who knows, but I know as of right now, the Majors aren't about our Hyphy scene (The Hyphy scene will still do good if you want to just stay Regional). They want something different, but then again this is a ride the bandwagon industry and I think they will ride whatever E-40's new album is going to sound like. Will it be Hyphy? Will it be Mob?
2008 is going to be interesting.
