WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.

Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.
Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday. The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.

The new name was not made public to protect the girl's privacy.
"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."

The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K" instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.

In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.
Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter "and tragically, Violence," he said.

New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, among other conditions, said Brian Clarke, the registrar general of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Clarke said officials usually talked to parents who proposed unusual names to convince them about the potential for embarrassment.

True, but for the government to say they cant name their kid what they want in fear of harrassment by other kids is NOT their call to make.

I disagree.

It is the government's job to protect people from each other. In this case, while the offenders are the parents, they are still harming their children. The government should prevent parents from harming their children.

I can see how this is a slippery slope issue (where does it stop) but on the other hand, parents should not be allowed to name their children Imma Slut or some shit like that.

Senior

In case you didn't notice, he has one given name for every letter of the alphabet plus his surname. Needless to say, he shortened it, and was commonly known as Mr. Hubert Wolfe, though officially it was said that he signed his name Hubert Blaine Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenbergerdorff, Sr.

We are only ASSUMING they are harming their children. What if the kid is a foot taller than all of his peers and can defend him/herself even if they did get teased? What if the kid is home schooled and does not have to deal with other kids?

I can see how this is a slippery slope issue (where does it stop) but on the other hand, parents should not be allowed to name their children Imma Slut or some shit like that.
Sure it is, parents can name their kids any damn thing they want, that is their RIGHT. Once the kid turns 18, they can change their name to whatever THEY like.

Again, the government should have NO right to say what is or is NOT a "good name" for ANYONE, period.

I mean, whats next?

"We have decided, as the New Zeleand government, that people cannot have sex in the pile drive position, becuase too much blood can flow to the head, and possibly explode."
