Jason Schmidt just finished his third straight complete game, pitching a 9 inning, 1 run gem against one of the best offensive teams in baseball. Schmidt threw 112 pitches allowing only one run (on a single home-run), struck out 5, and walked only 1 batter. The Cardinals have scored 49 runs over the past 5 games, 26 over the last 2, and rank third in the MLB in runs scored. The first place Cardinals had their hot streak halted as they faced one of the best pitchers in the game.
I think Jason Schmidt has been highly under-rated over the past few years, most certainly since his arival in San Francisco. He was bounced around from a couple of teams early on and was never given a legitimate shot to work his way into the rotation and get comfortable on any of the teams. Since his arrival to the Giants he has been nothing short of spectacular. Much of last season, and all throughout this year, I have been trying to convice you guys that he is the great pitcher that I make him out to be. The guy has 6 complete games so far this year, am I the only one that finds that amazing? Out of 16 starts he has completed 6 of them, that is really somethin' if you ask me. They have him at 5 CG's, im assuming thats because the 9 inning 2 run game against the Diamondbacks this year, he received a no decision. My purpose with this threadsimple, to convince you all that he is the real deal. I say this now, knowing that there will be games, possibly as soon as his next start, that he may lose or struggle, but like any great pitcher, he will bounce back.
Now lets see where Jason Schmidt ranks amongst the rest of the pitchers in the majors, just to put things into perspective for those of you not following.
ERA
MLB: 1st (2.14)
Strike-Outs
MLB: 4th (122) [5 behind 2nd]
Shutouts
MLB: 1st (3)
Complete Games
MLB: 1st (5)
has pitched six 9 inning games
Wins
MLB: It's quite hard to rank him. There are 5 pitchers with 11, 8 pitchers with 10, 8 pitchers with 9, and he has 8 (so do 10 other pitchers).
Walks
I couldn't find a ranking system for minimal walks, but amongst all active pitchers, he ranks 80th for most walks with only 28 in 16 starts.
He ranks 1st in WHIP with 0.93, 2nd in BAA (.001 behind 1st) and the list goes on my friends...
CZAR: Not talking shit here, but what do you have to say now concerning our earlier arguements about him? I know its still early only being half way through the year, and anything can happen, but I want to know what your analysis is. Would you say he is in the hunt for a Cy Young, or is he just going through a half season of luck.
Do you guys still think Russ Ortiz was the better pitcher? Hmmm...
In conclusion, I will say only this. Jason Schmidt is a great pitcher, indeed.
