The Vikings will hold a 3:00 p.m. press conference at Winter Park on Wednesday to introduce Jared Allen.

In a move that brings an instant pass-rushing threat to their defensive line, the Vikings on Wednesday acquired the services of defensive end Jared Allen, the league’s leader in sacks last season with 15.5 and a player who has tallied 43 sacks over the course of a four-year career with the Kansas City Chiefs.

In exchange for Allen, the Vikings sent their 2008 first-round pick (#17 overall) as well as two 2008 third-round selections to the Chiefs and the teams swapped sixth-round selections. They also agreed on a new six-year contract with Allen.

The addition of Allen aggressively addresses a pressing need for the Vikings and makes an already stout defensive front even more formidable.

The Vikings ranked tied for last in 2006 and last in 2007 against the pass and tallied just 68 sacks over both of those campaigns. They also ranked 25th in the league in sacks during the 2006 season and were able to add eight sacks to that total in 2007. The addition of Allen, a relentless pass rusher who tallied two sacks against the Vikings in Week 3 of last season, will surely assuage those concerns.

“I’m excited to meet the fans at the Vikings Draft Party on Saturday.” Allen said. “I look forward to jumping into this head first and engulfing myself in purple and gold. I am ready to play some football and win some games.”

The addition of Allen, who was an All-Pro in 2007 and also earned his first Pro Bowl appearance, adds a third Pro Bowler to the defensive line. Teamed with Kevin and Pat Williams, Allen supplements an already dominant rush defense and he will have an opportunity to take advantage of one-on-one blocking that could be created by teams who choose to double-team one of the Williamses. Or, a team could choose to double-team Allen on the outside and allow one or both of the Vikings star defensive tackles to wreak havoc in the offensive backfield.

“My life just got easier,” Allen said. “Having those two defensive tackles as teammates is going to be tremendous. Those guys are both proven veterans in this league who have been to Pro Bowls and they take pride in their work. The little time I’ve spent with them, they’ve been great. The only problem we’re going to have is who’s going to get to the quarterback first.”

Vikings Head Coach Brad Childress also mentioned that Allen is fierce against the run, citing his performance against the Purple last season. Allen had just come off a two-game suspension handed to him by the NFL and tallied eight tackles, two sacks, a safety, two passes defensed and a forced fumble in an effort that resulted in a 13-10 victory for the Chiefs.

Allen was an unheralded fourth-round pick of the Chiefs in 2004, coming out of Idaho State. Eventually, Allen, originally expected to provide long-snapping duties, impressed the Chiefs coaching staff as a rookie and earned a spot in the starting lineup, never relinquishing that role during his time with the team.

Allen led the Chiefs in sacks during the 2005 (11) and 2007 (15.5) seasons and he was second on the team in 2006 with 7.5. Along with a knack for sacking the quarterback, Allen also has a nose for the football. In 2006 he led the league with six fumble recoveries and in 2005 he forced seven fumbles and deflected seven passes. Last season he forced three fumbles and defensed ten passes.

The Little kid in my sig is me dancin cause we got Jared Allen! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Best move the Vikings have done since getting rid of Culpepper.

I ACTUALLY HAVE REAL HOPE FOR THIS YEAR!!!!!!!!!! I haven't been able to say that in 10 years!!!!

as long as he stays sober (*KNOCKS ON WOOD*) that d-line aint to be fucked with... we could see a 20 sack season from this guy

The Vikings are going to be good. Yeah who do you double on that defensive line? Man I am glad the Raiders don't have to play them this season... whew.

Also the Vikings should get Culpepper back... he's still pretty good from what I saw last year. He's still mobile

I actually believe the Chiefs got the better end of this deal, they trade away a good player who has an extreme downside to him (1 more fuckup = 1 year ban). And they get picks for it, if Mcfadden is still on the board with the 5th pick, im sure they could trade down to sum1 who really wants him, maybe dallass would give their 2 1sts to get him, and then KC would have 3 1st rounders, KC has the chance to make alot out of this situation, and trading down and acquiring more picks = more holes filled with young players

That's a good way to put it. Who ever they pick they would have to be pretty good. They do have a lot of picks so they can't miss on all of them.

So in other words, dont count the chefs out this season.... this move can be better for them in the long run, they didnt have to pay a maxed out contract out for Allen and got quite a few picks, their 1st, 2 3rds and swap 6th round picks

How so? Are you implying that the draft picks will not help them? They have a decent team already, i guess the Giants draft picks last year did nothing to help them, even tho they all played and contributed to winning the super bowl?

Quote form the Allen press conference
“I’ve never ran from my mistakes, I owned up to them, I made the changes necessary to be a better man, and you know that’s what I explained to them,” said Allen, who has said in interviews that he has quit drinking alcohol. “My biggest thing is you don’t have to hear me tell you how I’ve changed, you can come see me live. And people in the community, you guys will get to know me, and see, ‘Wow, OK, this is how he lives. This is his life.’ The important thing for me to express [to the Vikings] was that these changes were not made just so I would look good in the eyes of the NFL. These changes were made for me as a man and for me to be a better man for my family. To represent the name on the back of this jersey. Like I told coach, ‘Now that I’m a part of this family, I will do everything to represent that family as if I’m representing my personal family.’”
