The best-selling CRPG series worldwide is Pokémon. It has sold over 91 million units across 11 different titles as of 2004. The second and third best-selling series worldwide are Square Enix's Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, respectively. As of 2006, Final Fantasy has sold 60 million units, while Dragon Warrior has sold over 35 million units.
I'll give you the pokémon and Britney Spears thing. You can have them both, however you are NOT going to convince me that FF7 and FF3 don't own the majority if not all of the american rpg's.
Rehashing the same stories about purple haired spike-headed teenage boys deciding to leave their families and become men while saving the inevitably wimpy, giggling female gets old imo
Fire Emblem, Xenogears (for the ps1) FF7, FF3, Seiken Densetsu 3, Mother, Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest don't really have spikey haired kids. (Cloud from FF7 would be the only spike head, his hair isn't purple and he isn't a kid.)
I doubt you have seriously tried any of the games I mentioned, or kept an open mind about it. There is something completely different about the experience.
Tried them? Yes. Seriously? Hell no. They suck.
Also, if you're looking for (graphically) better, more recent examples of American RPGs, you can check out Jade Empire, Oblivion, Knights of the Old Republic, etc.
I can get into Knights of the Old Republic, that game is tight I can't front on it. Jade empire looks good and so does Oblivion, but I can't get into oblivion. On teh real, the whole middle earth looking themes with orcs, shining wizards, elves etc doesn't really do anything for me. Now, I admit, spikey haired purple teens isn't all that great either, but when you have religion, science and giant robots thrown into the same pot you get Xenogears.
I think part of my dislike for american RPG's is the dungeons and dragons look and feel it has.
