I hate to always be the pesimist but the unfortunate reality weather we choose to accept it or not is that the Bay NEVER was actually all the way on. We got very close with having lots of artists on majors but do the math, the majority of our artists have never even gone GOLD, let alone PLATINUM or multi-platinum. Peep the lists of GOLD and/or PLATINUM artists that have come from our soil.
MC Hammer (of course)
En Vogue
Tony Toni Tone
2Pac (not really a complete Bay repper either)
Digital Underground
Too Short
Spice 1
E-40
N2DEEP
The Click
Baby Bash (newest to the list)
If I forgot anyone please add them to the list but think about it, that is a very short list! Think about any other region for a minute. New Orleans, when they got one, they STAYED on. New York has always been on. LA just doesn't make enough hits for the radio either. WE complain about the Bay not being on when we have to realize that there is more to it than that. I think everyone in the Bay is waiting for a savior so that it will be easier for them to get put on. Think about how many people were signed to majors in the Bay:
JT The Bigga Figga/San Quinn
Concious Daughters
Paris
N2DEEP
E-40
The Click
Delinquents
Mac & AK
Total Devastation
Rappin 4Tay
RBL Posse
Del
Casual
Mac Mall
Ray Luv
YBB camp
Souls of Mischief
Dru Down
Luniz
Potna Deuce
and I am sure I missed alot of people.
Think about the people who currently have major deals in the Bay:
E-40, Baby Bash, Jay Tee, Cellski, Goapele, Yukmouth (sort of, Rap A Lot is distributed by Virgin but he doesnt have the promo support of a tradtional record deal), Keak Da Sneak (this is what I have heard but not confirmed).
We (The Bay) have always had a sub-standard relationship with radio. Some artists would get alot of play while others were completely ignored. Politics have existed in radio since the beginning of time. Its not a Clear Channel thing like people would like to think. Its a MONEY thing. No I am not talking bout payola either. Alot of people want to blame the DJ's and mixers but they have little to do with the programming of a station. Regardless of what we want to hear, the majority of the listeners (i.e. the LADIES) dont want to hear about what street we are reppin', or how gangsta we keep it or the plethora of other things WE as Bay rappers are talking about. I love the majority of music the Bay releases but the reality of it is that alot of it just doesn't have radio appeal much less NATIONAL radio appeal. Do you think if NBC played independent sitcoms all the time that were recorded on home cams by amateurs that they would remain to be the most succesful televeision network? No. The same goes for the radio. They can't flood playlists with crap. Regardless of talent, there is alot more that goes into creating a HIT than just making a song and then shooting it out to a couple of people we know and then complaining when it doesn't blow. There are managers, lawyers, record labels, radio consultants, booking agents, distributors, publicists, and a whole host of people that assist in a project to go to the next level. It is not quite as simple as recording an album and hopefully someone will RECOGNIZE the talent. Its more like people recognize hard work.
Take Cellski. He is one of the original players on the scene in the Bay. Je enjoyed great underground success and still does. He had several record deal offers and passed them up waiting for more lucrative ones. He kept grindin', kept realesing albums, left the Bay to get new contacts and after a couple of years of puttin' n hiw hustle in Houston he has a deal with Clover/Sony. This indicative of talent AND hard work!
Take Jay Tee. As a member of N2DEEP, he enjoyed GOLD certification in the early 90's, hosted yo MTV raps, got regular radio play accross the country and then poof, Profile Records disappeared. A successful indi career followed for the next 11 years and we have been converting 40 Ounce Records into a legitimate record label since 2000. We finally got Jay Tee's second chance in the form of a deal with Casablanca/Universal. This doesnt mean we get to be lazy, it means more work! We have been signed since December and they are just relasing our single on May 4th. We are by no means rich and certainly not famous so you have to understand alot more goes on behind the scenes. Bash had to go to Texas for almost five years before he finally got a deal and got to the level he is on now.
Im not sure what the point of this post is but for you dudes who are gridnin towards success you have to LEAVE the Bay to make other contacts and expand your career possibilities.
I think the sum of it is this; most muthafuckas are lazy and therefore not deserving of any success. I am not directing this at anyone but the proof will be in the pudding.
And I really wish we would stop kidding ourselves about the Bay. Do you think Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise get together and talk about how Clearwater, Iowa (just an example) just isnt crackin on the movie scene?
If you all want to do your hometowns justice then be successful and never return to your previous position and then that will be reppin' us correctly.
Think about Carlos Santana, does anyone worry about where he is form? No. They just respect his talent and hardwork.
Peace.
