No joke...think about it.

First it was the song "Bling, bling", than the whole crunk invasion began in like 2000 on a national level, and look where rap is now...

dumbed down lyrics all talking about the same thing, diamonds, clubs, and hoes...SAME MATERIAL, over and over, and over.

Think about it, ask anybody who actually has skill in the south, 80% of the time, they'll give you the same answer....Scarface, geto boys, Outkast, dungeon family, etc....its always the same answer, and those guys have been around for ages!

Now before you think im hating, im not, I just find it sad that every single video and artist that comes from the south is all trash, and brings nothing new to the table. You look at artists in West coast and east coast, and im sure all of us can name atleast 10 different artists who are dope as hell.

I serously believe the south has dumbed down hip hop to about an IQ of 50. I know there are plenty of dope acts in the south, but its sad that the only ones getting shine are the wackest motha fuckers out there.

Peace

Yeah, I know theres alot of dope acts out there....but I live on west coast, so all I see is the typical club, nursery rhyme rappers....

I mean its really sad, that all they put out is hot garbage. When I heard that song "Whisper", I almost had a heart attack...

But im not going to lie, because hip hop in general is getting pretty wack, but the south is on their own level right about now...as far as mainstream acts

LOL!

the south is the south. if you trip, every coast makes music the audience can vibe to. check the east, all they got is some straight street, subway, backpack shit. in the west, the synthesizer is high especially in LA for the mellow, something to ride to shit. in the bay, oakland got the pound like how The Team spits, and Quinn got some street shit cause thats just how it is in the inner SF. the southern culture is cars, big booty poppin crunk shit cause thats just how they get down. so of course, itll influence the music theyll end up making. i doubt they really give a fuck about whats considered hiphop or not as long as the audience is feelin it. same with the stupid go dumb hyphy shit....

in my opinion the south is not ruining hip hop at all...its giving hip hop a new face.

you say the south talks about the same thing every song?...so does everybody else in hip hop. think about it...how many times has snoop talked about weed, or lynch talked about killing, or nas talked about how nice he is on the mic? case closed.

you say the south dumbed shit down to an IQ of 50?...i dont know about that one...folks down south are getting distro deals and getting signed with the quickness...dont let that down south drawl fool you. niggas got IQ, business IQ that is!

I wouldn't necessarily blame the southern rap artists themselves. I'm more inclined to point the finger at the entertainment industry/media and their target audiences.

The entertainment industry/media knows dumbed down, "lowest common denominator" (LCD) + Masses of Fickle Consumers (MFC) = $$$$$$$$$$. So it only makes sense they're going to promote the hell out of the -50 IQ stuff.

All facets of mainstream media/culture (news, music, films, TV) work on that concept.

Hip-hop will outlive whatever rappers you see on BET or MTV engaging in modern-day 'buck-dancing'. *

Hopefully, this makes some sense as I'm currently experiencing the effect resulting from not having slept for the last 48+ hours . . . . . .

*EDIT: I ain't implying southern rap = modern day buck-dancing - crap can be found in all regions . .. just in case i'm misinterpreted .. .

i dont think the south is ruining hip hop because the south has there own type of flavor...alot of peoples from the south are gonna like the south more then eastcoast or west the same for east west midwest and south...different cultures and shit but with the crunk shit goin on the south is blowin up..south isn't hip hop by the way it's another type of rap music to jump to and if u dont like it then so be it but doesn't mean that hip hop is dyin...im thinkin hip hop aint even tight like it use to be, everybody is doin somethin different now with music...big l biggie are gone...wutang aint even da same like they use to be...

Think about it, ask anybody WHAT RAPPER HAS ACTUAL MUSICAL SKILL, 80% of the time, they'll give you the same answer....FLASH, BAMBATAA, MELLE MEL etc....its always the same answer, and those guys have been around for ages!

its mainstream music period. and if you get mainstream and your so called hip hop confused i think you shoud rethink your idea of what hip hop is. the south is hot right now so thats what your going to hear and the more people buy cd's for 1 song and vote on videos your gonna hear the same shit.

my point is if you dont consider what their doing as hip hop....then how are they ruining it? i think its opening doors for other people and regieons. just awhile ago all you seen on videos was r&b love shit. they may not be satisfying your taste but at least its some street muthafuckas coming up and abusing the game.

I dont even mind shit that talks about rims and money and shit. as long as the lryics are tight and its done in an original way, like Slim Thug, ESG, Chamillionaire, and so on. Bragging about your material worth has always been a part of the rap game, aint shit changed nowadays. The main problem is all this commercialism pimping hip hop culture. Shit is too watered down now, theres too many followers and not enough leaders.

The way I see it is that Southern Music is dance music. That's why its dumbed down and crunk and all that same bullshit - they're making shit to dance to. I hate dancing therefore I hate dance music. But all these girls going to the clubs to get their grind on and all the guys that wanna get them in bed know that bumping that type of music is what you want to do. But I consider most Southern beats and lyrics "dance accessible".

To each his own - people here have good points for both sides. But my opinion is that I agree - the South is doing to rap music the same thing that pop did to Rock'n'Roll - destroyed it.

But if you like dancing, or you like the beats more than the lyrics, then it is your thing. They're making the most money right now, so I dont think you wanna go up to any of those artists and tell them that they're ruining music. They'll get one of their 20 bodyguards to punch you in the face with a $25,000 ring.

All i know is this - i'm not bumping any of the artists except for the ones that were named - Scarface, Outkast, etc.

And while that comment can be applied to East Coast or West Coast or whatever other genre you want, I sure as hell can name more artists from the East or West with real skill than I can from the south. But its my opinion as to what defines "skill" in the first place.

Iam bumping the All Screwed Up cd by the Late DJ Screw (R.I.P.) and Iam feeling it. See there is a difference between the fake lyrics of the Ying Yang Twins, Lil Jon, Trick Daddy, and Trillville. Cats like Scareface, Geto Boyz, UGK, 3-6 (Older stuff), Paul Wall, Chamillionare, and The Blac Monks are the south.
