Pacquiao Won't Confirm Mayweather Bout Pushing Through
By Ronnie Nathanielsz
Ring Magazine’s pound f or pound king Manny Pacquiao says a proposed fight against undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. programmed possibly for May 5 next year will be a good one – if it pushes through.
Pacquiao who represents the lone congressional district of Sarangani was speaking to members of Congress and friends who gathered at the Resorts World Hotel and Casino for a dinner party hosted by the Hotel and Casino in honor of Pacquiao.
Pacquiao said "Hopefully, the next fight, is Mayweather. "However," he quickly added "I am not saying it will push through" leaving some doubt as to whether negotiations would succeed.
Pacquiao expressed confidence it would be a good fight should it push through and invited the congressmen to watch.
At the same time he predicted that he will win decisively in his next fight, considering his third fight with Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez was close. In fact Pacquiao’s majority decision win was somewhat controversial.
The eight division champion and “Fighter of the Decade” admitted that fight fans were disappointed that the Marquez fight was close since they expected him to win handily . Trainer Freddie Roach had predicted a knockout win in a maximum of nine rounds while strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza had said the fight wouldn’t last more than three rounds and could possibly end in one.
Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz who met with Mayweather at his Las Vegas Gym was visibly angry that stories on his visit came out and appeared particularly upset with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum who confirmed the meeting in an overseas telephone conversation with BoxingScene.com/Manila Standard.
Mayweather’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe was quoted as saying Mayweather and Koncz didn’t talk about the fight during Koncz’s Las Vegas visit while Mayweather himself asked Team Pacquiao to begin negotiations and sign a contract for a May 5 megabuck fight expected to be the biggest fight ever..
Mayweather said to fighthype.com "I've been told May 5 is open" adding that "Losing is in Pacquiao's mind because he lost just last week. He lost to Marquez three times. May 5 is the date, sign the contract, I'm waiting."
However, the undefeated Mayweayther who had earlier scored a lopsided shutout win over Marquez said "I can't be sitting waiting all day, you want to fight let's make it happen. I'm here, I'm waiting, what's going on? I can sign today. If I sign today you better sign tomorrow."
Pushing his demand for blood testing Mayweather went on "You said you're a clean athlete and you said you'd take the test so let's do it.I can't be sitting waiting all day. You want to fight, let's make it happen. If I sign today you better sign tomorrow."
Following Pacquiao's points victory over Marquez, trainer Freddie Roach was quoted by CNN saying he hoped a clash with Mayweather would happen because he added, "I think it would be the best fight in the world and I would love to see it."
