Not really

Views and values are something very different from the objective unbiased analysis of reality, which is what scientists do
the part you are failin to grasp is that "views and values dont matter, reality does" is the same as saying "my views give the concept of reality value, and as a subjective concept of mine i have decided based on my priorities' values to pay this more of my effort, because this is how i have decided to deal with things that i have so far come across, and are important to me"

Not at all

There is the ordinary folks' approach to life, which is usually what you describe, i.e. have some preconceived understanding of the world around you and then fit the data (if you ever look for any) into it. Science works the opposite way, i.e. scientists base their understanding of the world on actual data and the tools of cold logic and reasoning. The latter approach reveals the objective truth about the world, what one would call "the reality-based worldview"

the reality based worldview is a still limited by and to perception, understanding (or lack thereof) , interpretation. And all of those things are based on a subjective foundation dictated by priorities and standards/limits.

and all of those things are themselves based on experience and core beliefs.
The fact is im not even exaggerating any of this. If you want, i can break it down for you step by step and show you what every step is being influenced by and limited to. And how the influences and limitations of it are also being decided on by a foundation based on subjectivity themselves. And that the decision to do so itself is in the end a freewill act, and approached uniquely to each individual person.

Are you not operating under the influence of your own personal views and values when you say things such as we may need a dictatorship in order to save humanity; and is the premise of that not based on your personal view that value exists in the continued existence of our species?

do it, that way we may finally have some meaningful discussion

No, you don't understand

Here is what I am saying:

1. We are facing a number of disasters, each of which on its own is potentially capable of ending human civilization (energy resource depletion (Peak Oil), climate change, raw resource depletion (Peak Everything - metals ores, fertilizers, etc.)), ecosystem collapse, severe water crisis, nuclear war caused by combinations of the above, and others. This is a fact, no opinions, views, values, whatever you wanna call it.

2. We (>99% of us) are in complete denial of this fact. Not only that, the inertial barrier rooted in religious and political indoctrination (e.g. there is no need to worry about anything because God/the market will take care of everything) and the very poor level of education of most people on this planet, makes it absolutely impossible to make people aware of this fact. This is, again, a fact, that nobody can argue with

3. The nature of the crisis is such that it requires IMMEDIATE action, and action of the very unpleasant and radical kind (reducing consumption and population and investing all available resources into solving the resource problem, not into having a good time). This is what we have to do, if we want to be here 1000 years from now, 10000 years from now, if we want to make it to the stars, etc. Otherwise we will go extinct. This is again, a fact that no sane person can argue against after he looks at the data.

4. Because of #2, and because the measures we need to take will necessarily involve telling people that what they have been dreaming for their whole life (i.e. something involving increasing their consumption of resources) simply can't happen, it is extremely unlikely that people will participate in any kind of activity that actually solves the problems (it may even be the case that there is no solution to the problems but let's be optimistic). This is not a subjective opinion, it is a fact

5. Therefore bottom-up solutions of the problems are impossible, on the urgent timescale needed. It just can't happen, because of the huge inertial barrier existing and the active resistance that real solutions will be met with by a large part of the population. This leaves the rather unpleasant conclusion that our only chance is a very powerful (and very intelligent and knowledgeable) worldwide regime that is both capable and not afraid of implementing the necessary measures so that we somehow make it past this crisis. Again, I don't see where my individual views play here, this is what the data plus some not too complicated logic tell us.

This means that people who post all those conspiracy theories about how a world government is in the making and this will be the end of it and so on, actually get it completely wrong, because this maybe our only chance for survival. And by "our" I mean the species, not the individuals. You should understand that in the bigger scheme of things your life, my life and anybody else's life does not mean shit, it is the species, the planet and our civilization that we have to preserve and develop further. We only have one chance, and we are blowing it away. Now, this (whether in the really big scheme of things even the existence of the human species means anything) is debatable and a matter of subjective interpretation, but let's say that the phylogenetic survival instinct coded in us should be strong enough for us to do something about or survival.

@ThaG

Youre view is that science is 100% right. That, is a VIEW of life. That is a VALUE of belief.
1. I have never said that scientists are always correct

2. Science is the best and only way to get the correct answers (note that this is a very different statement from number 1)

3. 2 is true because of several centuries of successful demonstrations of how well the method works, and the whole human history full of demonstrations why nothing else works

4. These are not views, these are facts

1. If you dont think the USA Gov. has some backup plan for when Oil is no longer affordable to drain every last of out pennies, think again. They have the tech to replace much of what we do now with oil. They even have timelines such as providing that corn-gasoline mix at every gas station by 2012. Once the US citizens can no longer afford to spend every penny on that I am sure they have another source (such as water) to provide energy and charge us more than it should cost....

I stopped buying soda after it hit $1.49 for a 16 ounce bottle.

This has been discussed hundred times - you can't replace oil with corn because not only you don't gain, but you actually lose energy in the process

You don't get the premise of what he's saying, lack the ability to read and think critically and utilize your uncanny ability of selective reading in 99.9999998% of the threads you reply in. He is saying the government will continue to bleed us dry REGARDLESS of what they come up with.
