If there is someone u respect and want to work with. U either have a friendship/relationship with I see no problem doing a track for a track deal or verse for verse. But if u don't know dude and ask to colab and he brings $$ in to the discusion . U shouldn't get offended. So expect that.

I trip out how so many people call it a business, so there is some type of service involved, but my question is, how many of these artist who are charging for verses because it's a "business" actually pay to use samples, interpolations, mechanical license etc. to the artist they borrow from?

I think ppl consider it a business for the fact that you are putting together a product for sale. Whether or not u purchase a lease for a sample doesn't take from the fact that you are still putting your own time and money into something that (most) rappers expect to turn a profit off of.

I understand that concept. My question is, say I'm charging you x amount of dollars for a verse and I tell you I have to charge because it's business. I'm in it to make money and nothing is free in this world etc.

BUT!!!! Say I have sampled beats, hooks, interpolations etc. and I'm not treating it like a business and paying the artist I borrow from. I haven't purchased a mechanical license, contacted that artist publisher and cleared the sample (meaning paid for it.) Therefore, is it only a "business" when it comes to paying me?

I know first hand experience, samples etc. cost a pretty penny. It's not very easy to clear a sample without a large amount of dollars (within the range of $12,000.) Nine out of ten the publisher will request a major to be behind you before they actually clear a sample. I know for a fact that nobody in the Siccness is on a actual major. Well, at least what the industry / a publisher would consider a real major.

I hate to come in here and sound like a pessimist / hater, but this is a reality. The music business is not a one way street. If your going to charge for a service, people better have the credentials that they too are paying what needs to be paid in this "business."

Oh I definitely understand where your coming from no doubt! and i don't disagree with the hypocrisy of not going through the motions to pay for another artists' work to use on my own ALL THE WHILE im charging 2 or 3 racks for verse to the next starving artist..

but heres where the disconnect comes from when it comes to the market..

YOU, as the buyer are looking to purchase a verse to hopefully fish out of the pool that is my fanbase, even give my namesake a mention on the cover...

ME as the artist, isn't charging for that. Im charging for the time it takes me to write and record this piece of work for you.

Now, if my fanbase was large and hardcore enough to still buy your entire cd because my verse was the sound of me taking an early morning shit in my bathroom for the feature... I wouldn't see the problem with adjusting those prices for guaranteed sales. I understand your arguement, but it doesnt negate from the fact that im still putting in time and effort into my work. Its akin to something like my boss saying he feels i shouldn't have to get paid for today because I used their toilet paper.. even though he himself didn't come out of pocket for it :/

but you don't sound like a pessimisst bro, you make valid points.

Thank you, we can agree to disagree, but both have valid points no doubt.

Rule of thumb:

If you can't afford it, you can probably live without it.

Everyone has a right to set their prices, we don't have to agree with them, but we also don't have to give them our money right?
