^^^ agreed... Dude I recorded with for a while had the whole education at some school, certificate on the wall and shit. Spent a gang on equipment, but don't really got the ear. He makes his money though, works in his basement..

Thing is, if you ain't goin to some big city, you gotta find yourself a town with a lotta talent and no recording studios. Then buy your equipment and start your business.

You're trippin if you dont think going to school to actually learn how to play an instrument will make you a better musician. Music theory classes can help alot too.

Thats why most rap music sucks nowadays, a ton of "beat makers" have no musical knowledge whatsover.

ive never met anyone that graduated from a music school that didnt have a bad thing to say about it. they all have "real" jobs now after blowing all that money when like someone earlier stated, they should have saved the money they blew on the school and bought gear and books with it. better investment. to each his own though.

your best bet is to get a degree in something else that can guarantee a solid future ... and learn how to be a engineer on your own. my buddy matt kelley who is a known engineer in the bay with gold and platinum records under his belt, never went to any kind of school and is also not doing so well..

Don't waste your money going to school for it, you'll regret that shit. People learn engineering and production by just gettin' into a studio and watching, then dabbling in it yourself. It's a commitment, but it's way cheaper than actually going to school.

If I were you, I'd listen to Jayda. You might as well go cop the equipment and books, and get to work during your free time. Have friends come through and drop shit for nothing, just so you can work on it. Or if you rap, drop your own shit and practice with that. Nothing beats the hands on, in studio experience. I've learned a lot just by being in the studio to record my own projects. Still have a lot to learn, but I know 10x more than I did when I dropped my first song.

I'm taking music courses at my community college this fall. Theres also a music business course at another college in the same district that I wanna enroll in next semester. I know a degree ain't gonna do a damn thing for me but I'm just trying to gain as much musical knowledge as I can. I don't wanna settle for just being another 2 key melody FL Studio producer.

So basically what your saying is you don't know anything about playing the keyboard, atm? I ain't no pro in music theory at all or pro in making beats, but best I can suggest is just build up your ear by learning on your own. Train your ears, you don't want to play shit out of key. You can try by first focusing on using nothing but the white keys, so make an entire original beat using nothing but the white keys. Then do the same with the black keys. Then later on once you understand how all those keys sound together, make beats utlizing both the white and black keys. There's no right or wrong way to play your music and what I'm saying doesn't mean that utilizing both the white/black keys in your melodies will make your song more complex/better, the only wrong you can really do is if you play your shit out of key. But once you develope your ear, you can easily pick that shit up. You will also eventually develope a feel for your keyboard, memorize finger locations and patterns that sound right in key.

Also one thing I like about FL Studio since it's loop based, you can lay down more complex shit, part by part, utilizing midi data. Like lay down a progression of chords first to get some sort of rhythm going, then lay down another part of single notes overtop. Just use the option, "blend recorded notes with existing data" and it'll record the newer shit overtop of the existing shit.

BTW, what community college are you taking your courses at? I took one class at SouthWestern and it was a complete waste of time. I think it was the Electronic Music100 class. That class was just stupid as fuck, very basic shit you can learn in a day. I didn't learn anything new. However, if you're going to take a class at SouthWestern take a class with Jay Henry as the teacher. That dude knows his shit and is entertaining. I was trying to crash a class (Recording Techniques I believe) and I actually was impressed on my 1st day of class.

Good lookin out on the advice. My drum patterns come out nice but when it comes to melodies i'm garbage unless I'm sampling. I'm not only trying to learn the piano tho. I also wanna learn to play other instruments like the Guitar, sax, etc.

FL Studio is the shit, I seen some industry quality tracks get made on there. People hate on it cuz its simple to use and the stock sound are garbage. But why use stock sounds anyways?

I'm taking Basic Musicianship, World Music, Class Piano I, and a Music Studio course at Mesa. Hopefully I can get enough units to transfer to USD or San Diego State. I know a degree aint gonna make me a top notch producer but the knowledge I take from the courses will come in handy in the long run. Plus it never hurts to have a college degree no matter what its in.

Well I only mentioned the keyboard because in a DAW environment, you can pretty much use a keyboard to play any type of instrument you want, with all the VSTi libraries, synths and all that's out there you can pretty much get any sound, including guitars and other acoustic instruments. A keyboard is just so universal and quite simple to grasp.

But yeah, definitely take some piano lessons. I haven't done so, but I'm considering it. Learning the guitar/bass would also be awesome.

But anyways, yeah, FL Studio is the $hit.
