LIFE OR DEATH is a classic! My Mom passed away from breast cancer in early '98 (RIP--I miss you!), and that CD (with other NL CDs of '98) helped me get through the struggle of dealing with life without my Mom. When C-Murder, Fiend, Soulja Slim, Mac, etc. rapped slow tracks about death, I identified. And those piano tracks were eerie as hell.
Some people who dug the more Cali-fied NL of 94'/'96 say that NL "fell off" after '97...but I don't think that's true--they just altered their production into a more Southern sound.
NL's CDs from TRU 2 DA GAME (2/97) up to about Silkk's MADE MAN (2/99) were more Southern-sounding than the '94/'96 CDs, but they were still lyrically hardcore and dope. The only difference was that the '97/'99 CDs reflected the hard ghettos of the South more than the West, but that was cool. The ghetto is basically the same everywhere you go! LOL!
Sure, the '97/'99 CDs would have maybe 2 or 3 commercial-sounding tracks, but it was cool because there would always be 15-16 other tracks that were hard and dope!!! I used to get SO geeked up waiting for Friday to come so I could go to Rice's and pick up the new Fiend, Mean Green Comp, Mr. Serv-On, etc. Look where they are now, though...this chanting/dance shit they've been doing recently is beneath them, and it doesn't seem to be doing the trick in terms of the sales they used to get (OK, maybe Lil Romeo, but otherwise...).
PEACE!
