The reason I ask is: Wouldn't it throw off your mix if you use a sub... By over accentuating the bass frequencies, so you would tone down the bass in your mixes and then when you play it on a systemwithout a sub...

^^ You answered your own question. If you know you're mixing heavy at certain frequencies then you know where to pull back.

When mixing, using a sub is intended to make the bass response nice & uniform, not give you an environment that knocks like the trunk in your car (which is what some people actually think!). Response accuracy is what we're talking about here.
