If you want to know about God, you might want to talk to an atheist.

Heresy? Perhaps. But a survey that measured Americans' knowledge of religion found that atheists and agnostics knew more, on average, than followers of most major faiths. In fact, the gaps in knowledge among some of the faithful may give new meaning to the term "blind faith."

A majority of Protestants, for instance, couldn't identify Martin Luther as the driving force behind the Protestant Reformation, according to the survey, released Tuesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life. Four in 10 Catholics misunderstood the meaning of their church's central ritual, incorrectly saying that the bread and wine used in Holy Communion are intended to merely symbolize the body and blood of Christ, not actually become them.

Atheists and agnostics -- those who believe there is no God or who aren't sure -- were more likely to answer the survey's questions correctly. Jews and Mormons ranked just below them in the survey's measurement of religious knowledge -- so close as to be statistically tied.

So why would an atheist know more about religion than a Christian?

American atheists and agnostics tend to be people who grew up in a religious tradition and consciously gave it up, often after a great deal of reflection and study, said Alan Cooperman, associate director for research at the Pew Forum.

"These are people who thought a lot about religion," he said. "They're not indifferent. They care about it."

Atheists and agnostics also tend to be relatively well educated, and the survey found, not surprisingly, that the most knowledgeable people were also the best educated. However, it said that atheists and agnostics also outperformed believers who had a similar level of education.

The groups at the top of the U.S. Religious Knowledge Survey were followed, in order, by white evangelical Protestants, white Catholics, white mainline Protestants, people who were unaffiliated with any faith (but not atheist or agnostic), black Protestants and Latino Catholics.

Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists were included in the survey, but their numbers were too small to be broken out as statistically significant groups.

Stephen Prothero, a professor of religion at Boston University and author of "Religious Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know -- And Doesn't," served as an advisor on the survey. "I think in general the survey confirms what I argued in the book, which is that we know almost nothing about our own religions and even less about the religions of other people," he said.

He said he found it significant that Mormons, who are not considered Christians by many fundamentalists, showed greater knowledge of the Bible than evangelical Christians.

The Rev. Adam Hamilton, a Methodist minister from Leawood, Kan., and the author of "When Christians Get it Wrong," said the survey's results may reflect a reluctance by many people to dig deeply into their own beliefs and especially into those of others.

"I think that what happens for many Christians is, they accept their particular faith, they accept it to be true and they stop examining it. Consequently, because it's already accepted to be true, they don't examine other people's faiths. … That, I think, is not healthy for a person of any faith," he said.

The Pew survey was not without its bright spots for the devout. Eight in 10 people surveyed knew that Mother Teresa was Catholic. Seven in 10 knew that, according to the Bible, Moses led the exodus from Egypt and that Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

The question that elicited the most correct responses concerned whether public school teachers are allowed to lead their classes in prayer. Eighty-nine percent of the respondents correctly said no. However, 67% also said that such teachers are not permitted to read from the Bible as an example of literature, something the law clearly allows.

For comparison purposes, the survey also asked some questions about general knowledge, which yielded the scariest finding: 4% of Americans believe that Stephen King, not Herman Melville, wrote "Moby Dick."

Did you know eating shellfish is a sin in Christian beliefs right along side there with homosexuality? Think about that next time you go to Red Lobster because you will be burning in hell with all the faggots for the rest of eternity! :devious:

If you were to take every criteria of every religion that is considered a sin, and lump it all together, you're only path to heaven is to lock yourself in a box and wait to die. But that might be considered a variation of suicide, so nevermind. It's a funny thing, religion.

whats the point of this thread? why do atheists feel the need to bash Christians? i dont get it.
That's a valid point. I think atheists love the attention they receive when they make a mokery of God in front of theists. In fact, I know they do. It could be the guise of a superiority complex. Or they may just love being black sheep.

Is that in the same way religious people like to shove their beliefs down other peoples throats every day and think of themselves as superior (or holy, whatever the fuck you want to call it) to others that don't share the same beliefs as them? Not only to atheists either but to people of all other religions that aren't theirs?

I mean we are making generalizations here right?

you do, from time to time. dont act dumb bro.

this is what you posted at the end of your article:

Did you know eating shellfish is a sin in Christian beliefs right along side there with homosexuality? Think about that next time you go to Red Lobster because you will be burning in hell with all the faggots for the rest of eternity

bashing beliefs = bashing Christians imo

I bash everything from time to time man, not only religion and trust me not only Christians. I'm just scared Muslims might blow up my mom or something if I talk about them in a negative light.

That shellfish part was just a fun fact a lot of people, Christian and not, don't know about. I just find it amusing how a lot of religious people (not only Christian once again) like to pick and choose the parts of their holy books and what to be like "hey breh you are going to hell" for. That was just one example and the first that came to mind.

I'm not posting in a religious thread about how I'm surprised religious people are still around though, over and over again. I started this thread and you are posting in my thread... so I'm not following you there.

Nothing at all and some of my best friends are Christian and others are of different faiths. I just find it amusing how uneducated a lot of religious people (again not just Christians) are about something they believe so strongly in. I mean if I really thought having sex before marriage was going to make me burn in hell for over 9000 years I'd still be a virgin.

Plus this was more or less a Sunday troll thread but I hope I answered your questions. I have no problem with people believing in whatever they like. If someone wants to worship a couch and they are overall good people then more power to them.

Cut the crap. Atheists bash Christians because Christians have done far worse to non-believers for far too long. Do your history and you'll see how Christians have tormented the world for a long time. An Atheist saying a few words to clown dumb ass Christians is nothing compared to all the slaughter and horrific acts that are still being committed by Christians and other religious groups.

If it's okay for Theists to express their belief in their invisible man, then why is it not okay for Atheists to express our non-belief in the invisible man? In fact, Theists bring that bullshit to people's houses. They have billboards, bumper stickers, t-shirts, TV programs, etc. They even force children to believe it from birth. So why isn't it okay for an Atheist to express their belief in any way? Why is it an Atheist always encouraged to keep their beliefs to themselves? If it's okay for Theists to tell us that we're gonna burn in hell and that bad things are gonna happen to us for not believing in the invisible man, then why is it not okay for us to point out how stupid Theists are for believing in their invisible man? I can go on all day with the double standards that Theists condone, but I'd be here all day.

but you know what bro, the comparison between what jess did in the odd future thread and you is this:
I get it, you dont believe in God, you think Christianity is a bunch of garbage. understandable. thats your opinion that you are entitled to. It just seems like you go out of your way to make sure everybody knows you are an atheist, like you have something to prove.
I am 31, will be 32 next month. Ive been in church ALL of my life. I believe that God is real, i have many situations to back this up.
Being in church all of my life i have seen all types of christians. and yes my friend there is a lot of hypocrisy going on in church. but see, being a christian, i dont go to church for them people i go to church to hear the good word and praise God thats it.
i think its very sad that a select few ruin your outlook of christianity. my stance on anything, is only God can judge you at the end. whether you are an atheist, homosexual, murderer, child molester, etc. whatever, only God can judge you.
I just find it strange that you go out of your way at times to make sure people know your stance on Christianity.
In my experience an atheist either greq up in a home that didnt believe in God, so that belief was never passed on to them. Or they did believe in God at some point, but something traumatic happened in their lives which questioned their faith and they now choose to believe God is not real because he did not "come through" when they needed Him.
there is no such thing as the perfect Christian. EVERY christian has an issue they are dealing with.
i could go on and on. but it would too long to read lol. but thats all i want to say.

It's all good breh but I'm still not understanding why you keep saying Christian over and over. Replace it with religion/religious and you'd be more on point.

Why do religious people go out of there way to let people know they are religious could be asked too then though, right?
