I think they have yet to perfect SSD'd, obviously from that article. The $=GB ratio is fuckin AWFUL on those though.

Ona side not, have you fuced with those new WD VelociRaptors? Im waiting for the smaller version, as the 300GB one is going for $300. I need something a 1/4 of that size.
:( why'd you mention that? I fought a long battle with myself not upgrading my computer at the end of last year and have tried to keep away from the latest in HDD tech since is it the bottleneck of my system.

If I spend $$$ I'm sending you the bill.

*goes googling for VelociRaptors*

what are you going to be doing on it? If it's just for class work, internet, etc. Maybe you should look into some of these new UMPCs (ultra mobile pc) Engadget has a lot of info on different brands/specs
Here are a few. If you lookin for something powerful...this aint it. but for day to day stuff. they're perfect.
Engadget has a lot of info on em.

Nice, we got to spend a few fleeting moments with the Kohjinsha SA1F00A convertible tablet UMPC. It's kind of pushing the boundaries of what a UMPC actually is since, well, as we said it's a convertible tablet, but it's a damned tiny and small one. It's also rather solid-feeling (hey, Japanese engineering at work). Image gallery, hop to it.

You know the drill: product prototype hits the tradeshow circuit, gets official with specs, hits for retail, and then the holiest of holies... the unboxing. Yeah, the R2H is just a generation one UMPC we've seen kicking around for like, ever. But when you just unloaded some $1000 for your new gadget, well, as the unboxer at OnlyUMPC puts it... that first impression is still, like, "awesome." We totally, like, understand bro.

We've just received these images of HP's rumored UMPC. Honestly, we have no reason to doubt their authenticity. The HP Compaq 2133 "lifestyle accessory" features a big, scratch resistant 8.9-inch 1366 x 766 (WXGA) display, ExpressCard/54 slot, Wireless LAN, nearly full-sized QWERTY (95% of full), integrated webcam, and optional SSD in a 2.5-pound anodized aluminum sex pot running Vista or Linux. Or so say the tipped images. Funny how the once keyboard-less UMPC-class device has now morphed into an Eee PC-like mini. Still, if this is what we can expect from the UMPC crowd come Silverthorne then you can count us in, HP.

You could go with the Dell inspiron with the same specs as a vaio for about $ 300-400. Plus you get to build it from the ground up.

DO NOT GO WITH TOSHIBA! I work at the ups store and damn so many people send this shit back for repairs (broken hd, cracked screens, etc)

nothing with touchscreen.. those things lose sensitivity.. youll find yourself sending your computer in for repairs more than often. Arent mac laptops notorious for melting videocards? Mac charges up the ass for everything.. new cable.. "that'll be 50 bucks.. sorry but only mac makes it, it's proprietary"

Macs are overpriced and I read a report on a forum somewhere but IBM is actually the highest rated for their laptops and Apple was the closest but everything else didn't even score close two the tow. I wouldn't get a dell because they are notorious for the chargers breaking and the port on the motherboard for the charger. I replaced the jack on my girlfriends and it was a bitch. I really don't like dells but I just got a dell laptop for graduation and I like it I just really hope it doesn't start to fall apart like most dells do. I will see if I can find the article so that you can see exactly what the report said.

Lenovo ThinkPad – Strongest Notebook Brand, Says Research Firm.
IBM ThinkPad Notebooks Have the Best Reputation

Category: Mobile

According to a report from Technology Business Research (TBR), Lenovo’s ThinkPad brand has the most respect and brand awareness among end-users. Customers consider such systems as the most reliable and the company’s checks confirm that end-users have maximum satisfaction with their IBM ThinkPad-branded machines.

“Lenovo has clearly been the most consistent at meeting the very high requirements of its customers,” said Jon Lindy, president at TBR. “We think Lenovo should continue to push innovations to the forefront in order to further enhance its reputation in the industry.”

In Q4 2006, Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks received higher awareness than the company’s closest competition as the brand most often identified as standing apart from the crowd. The report noted that the perception of the ThinkPad value proposition has increased steadily for the past year helping to move Lenovo to a leadership position.

For the eighth consecutive quarter, Lenovo dominated the area of hardware reliability, confirming the long-standing ThinkPad reputation for durability and exceptional product design. Noting improvement in specific categories from the previous quarter, TBR recognized Lenovo for making substantial progress within the areas of notebook value, ease of doing business, repair time, and overall satisfaction.

TBR observed that Lenovo was the only PC company in the report to maintain its competitive strength position for hardware reliability for an extended period of time. The progress of Lenovo in the past five reporting periods has been an overall advance in position.

The TBR report singled out Lenovo’s longstanding reputation for design quality and high reliability. Lenovo retained its product design competitive strength, extending its leadership status to the past three reporting periods. Examples of ThinkPad’s innovative product designs include IBM-developed Roll Cage and Active Protection System shock absorbing technologies that protect the structure and internal component of the notebook.

Lenovo’s Roll Cage, a magnesium alloy frame that absorbs shock by surrounding the critical interior parts, is an inner armor chassis that reduces the amount of stress on internal components when the notebook is dropped. The internal components, including the hard disk drive, are mounted in a one-piece magnesium cage that forms a more protective shell than traditional casings without affecting usability. Combined with Lenovo’s Active Protection System (which continuously monitors the ThinkPad and temporarily stops the hard drive to help prevent some hard drive crashes when a fall or similar event is detected), the ThinkPad roll cage provides a strong solution to defend against costly damage. In addition, the ThinkPad HDD Shock Absorber provides impact protection from crashes that could occur when setting the notebook on a hard surface while in use, providing 30% more protection than the system case alone.

“Our performance ranking in TBR’s quarterly report is strong evidence of our focus on delivering the best product and service to our customers,” said Christopher Askew, senior vice president, Customer Service, Lenovo. “Our team works tirelessly to bring customers the best designed, most carefully thought-out, and best engineered personal computers in the world.”

yeah i know this, mac uses intel, ibm, nvidia, ati.. etc.. but its a specific part designed for macs.

People say macs are better yet theyre using the same shit PC's are using. it just looks 'prettier'
