OAKLEY, Calif. -- Lisa McClelland says she isn't a racist. She says her campaign for a Caucasian Club at her California high school is a move toward diversity, not bigotry.

She says everyone is invited -- and nobody will be excluded.

McClelland's ethnic background includes American Indian, Hispanic, Dutch, German, Italian and Irish. She says she and her friends feel slighted by other clubs at Freedom High School in Oakley, such as the Black Student Union and the Asian Club.

McClelland says she's collected 245 signatures of support from students, adults and others since announcing her plans three weeks ago.

One person who won't be signing up is Darnell Turner, first vice president of the local chapter of the NAACP. Turner says he thinks the club will create racial tension.

Perhaps they shouldn't call it race clubs because any member of the same race may feel the same as another member of the other race!

I think they should call it culture clubs (i.e. urban ghetto club, rich spoiled brats association, posers posse, etc)

I think the idea is acceptable by law, morally i guess it can benefit the members, but the impression they give by forming a "white club" with the nature our country's mindstate its currently under, i think it could be translated as a white power club, even if the only thing they do is sit at the president of the club's house and drink pepsi and watch the matrix all night.

a black union club might have more place than a white club, simply because of the amount of white history taught/stressed in school already. a white club run by a girl who says shes not racist is really an advertisment for the ignorant to join/follow, i say the whole fuckin idea is a joke.

Personally, I don't think there really is a need for a white club, maybe a low income club or something to help the kids of all race who are less fortunate succed in school. The fact of the matter is, our school system allows there to be clubs that promote the achievment of whoever in the education system. They have to allow for a white club, as long as they don't promote hate, racism, etc. and allow all races to join. I think the whole idea of a white club comes off bad, as if they are gonna be the lil' KKK or something.

i don't see the big problem
i wouldn't of joined when i was in school
but shit, our biggest clubs was the Polnesian Club, BSU, and La Raza
there was whites in each one...blacks in the polynesian one, mexicans in the polynesian and black ones...

so if there was a white club, there woulda been polynesians blacks and latino's in it

you guys are being pretty hypocritical...

EVERYONE is welcome...that's what i heard...
