I definately feel you, don't get me wrong, U know i understand the turmoils of events...that's why i quit doing them so often.
I'm just saying...get the venue to waive the "rent" I know Rythm Lounge(just as an example) rent is only $50.
and we both know for damn sure that dude ain't getting any substantial money at the bar unless someone throws a show there.......(it's wrong for venues to charge unless your paying for a professional to do sound and lighting, one of the reasons shit is backwards, they all try to operate as Canes) and the sound and Lighting at RL is HORRIBLE...and the only reason he continues to charge is cause cats actually pay him the $50...if you have an established track record of filling up venues and getting good bar numbers fools will have no problem waiving the fee.....next few good shows you do, ask the venue manager to give you somesort of reciept or write up of the bar sales. show this to bars and clubs and they will understand you know what your doing. kind of keep a portoflio of sorts.
Sponsors will cover flyers if you give them a proper distro plan....I have done it numerous times, just got to grind to get them, and to be honest flyers are a waste of money unless you have a marketable headliner on them, otherwise they just get used as coasters and tossed into the trash. It's all the artist friends who show up at showcases anyway. So in essence at a showcase it's on the artist to fill up the venue, not you.
DJ's are fucking the game up too....it used to be the DJ was the one whom decided if the MC was good enough to introduce them, noone could touch the mic unless the DJ said so.....now DJ's are just tossed on the flyer and eveyone considers them as support, and you got actual DJ's with talent that get no play cause there is DJ's or shall I say dudes with expensive equipment who will spin for $50 a night.
I def feel you on the bread aspect, thats why I don't do showcases anymore....It's impossible to do them efficiently by yourself without a team....and cats just expect to get put on the bill and have people show up....I believe it's a promoters job to inform the public of a marketable headliner he has paid for an engagment, but it's the artists job to inform the public they will be performing at a showcase.
showcases used to be a tool to inform people of new talent.....does anyone atleast agree with that statement????? hahaha....now they are kind of exploited for revenue.
but because of the nature of the game at the moment, showcases are the only way to get alot of people on to a stage.
im just on some " why can't it be the way it USED to be" rant type shit right now...my bad.
