it's not a metaphor it's a beautifully illustrative illusion that leaves itself open to interpretation. personally i consider it thusly: my heart is noble, royal, rich. but it's experienced so much negativity that it's cried enough tears to create a protective liquid barrier against intruders wishing harm upon it, much like a moat is a protective liquid barrier protecting it from horse-backed intruders, thereby my heart is a castle, and it's tears are a moat keeping haters on the nether regions.
