It might be at some but we have polarizers on ours that automatically switch over seeing we just went fully digital a few years ago. I know some of the theatres that have older digital projectors have manual ones so I'm sure those could be a pain in the ass change by hand all the time.

That said most people would never notice the difference even if the polarizer wasn't down and it's more like maybe 5% dimmer, if that, on the ones we have. Up to 85% sounds like a number they are pulling out of their ass because you would hardly be able to see anything.
