PORTLAND — A Roseburg man rode his runaway dock several miles down the Umpqua River in high, fast water and refused to be rescued because that would mean giving up the three boats tied to it.
KQEN reports (541 Radio - 541 Radio - Homepage) the man wanted rescuers to push the boats to shore. The rescue team said that wasn't safe in the swollen river.
After a 90-minute ride Sunday afternoon, the man agreed to get into a rescue boat.
When they got to shore, police arrested 59-year-old Larry Strain on charges of disorderly conduct and reckless endangering, for putting rescuers at risk.
Police said the ride started when Strain went out to make sure the boats were tied up, and the dock gave way.
The boats were swept on downstream, and their fate wasn't immediately known.
