This 'ice bucket challenge' nonsense can fuck off. I been sick of seeing/hearing about it, but it's reaching the point of absurdity.
A group of high schoolers came in today, talking about the different players on their football team doing/challenging/and being challenged to dump water on their heads. I asked if they donated money individually or as a team and they looked at me like I was speaking Chinese. I asked if they knew that's the point of the entire thing, to raise awareness and drive donations for ALS. Not one of them knew it. 8 high school football players, not 1 knew.
That's ignorant, but the whole endeavor is borderline disgusting. I cant stand the "everyone stop and look at me while I do something for charity." Even now it's past that point apparently and has abbreviated to just "look at me."
And on the other hand the news said that $15 million has been raised. Which is well and good, and sounds moderately impressive, until you think about the amount, and wealth of people doing the stupid thing. With damn near every major athlete and entertainer jumping on the bandwagon, it's actually kind of a bummer. The SF AIDS walk brings in around $6 million, and that's in just a few weeks collected by regular people.
