I don't know who Death Grips are but I just read they bailed on the chance to open for Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails.

lol basically took the biggest opportunity an up and coming musician could possibly ask for and threw it away.

Na. The 30-40 year old dudes that would go to that show would hate death grips. Also they're kind of known for sabotaging their own career. I think they knew it was all down hill from here and wanted to quit on top.

How large of venues do their own tours fill and how many albums do they sell?

Looking them up on youtube it looks like they play clubs unless they were on a festival tour with tons of other groups lol if your tour consists of only clubs in front of a couple hundred people, I'd call that up and coming. If they weren't they would be filling at least a theater or some outdoor pavilions.
