NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Facing growing anti-immigrant rhetoric, the United Farm Workers union is challenging Americans to take their labor-intensive, low-paying farm jobs.

As communities nationwide grapple with tenacious unemployment, migrant workers are often accused of stealing jobs from Americans. The union believes this accusation is without basis, and intends to demonstrate this with a newly-launched campaign called "Take Our Jobs."

"Farm workers do the work that most Americans are not willing to do," said union president Arturo Rodriguez in the announcement of the campaign.
At least half a million applicants are needed to replace the immigrant workforce, so the union has posted an online application for Americans who want to work on a farm.

Through its Web site, at www.takeourjobs.org, the union promises to connect applicants with farm jobs in their area.

Since June 24, at least 4,000 people have responded to the application, said Rodriguez. Some are serious responses and others are hate mail. "Only a few dozen have really followed through with the process," he said.

Most applicants quickly lose interest once the reality sinks in that these are back-breaking jobs in triple-digit temperatures that pay minimum wage, usually without benefits, according to the union. Some small farms are not required to pay minimum wage and in 15 states farms aren't required to offer workers' compensation.

Despite the dismal job market in the U.S., where the unemployment rate is 9.5% and 14.6 million people are out of work, there have been few takers.
"I think everybody in our society is pretty clear that the least desirable job in the U.S. is being a migrant farm worker," said Rob Williams, director of the Migrant Farm Worker Justice Project. "If someone said to me, 'Here's a hazardous job and there's no worker's compensation,' I'd say, 'No thanks, It's kind of a no-brainer."

The Department of Agriculture counts nearly one million farm workers in the United States. According to the Migrant Farm Worker Justice Project, 85% of farm workers are immigrants -- and up to 70% of them are illegal.

Rodriguez, the union president, said the campaign is meant to draw attention to the need for immigration reform, such as the so-called AgJobs bill currently held up in Congress. The bill would grant temporary legal status to immigrants, which would become permanent if they continue to work on farms for a specific period of time.

"If [members of Congress] can't do their job in passing the bill, then they should come work in the fields," he said.

Illegal workers are rich fodder for anti-immigration leaders such as Gov. Janice Brewer, R-Ariz., who told reporters in June that the "majority" of immigrants crossing the border from Mexico are smuggling drugs for cartels. The governor also signed into law requirements for state police to "determine the immigration status" of anyone under "reasonable suspicion" of being an illegal alien.

The Justice Department on Tuesday sued the state of Arizona to overturn its new immigration law.

The proponents for migrant farm workers insist that they help, not hinder, the U.S.

Williams said that if people who oppose immigration "got their wish and all the unauthorized people went home tomorrow, we would have a crisis. We wouldn't have anyone to pick the crops, milk the cows, or take care of the Christmas trees."

He added, "It may be the least desirable job, but it's the most important job for all of us, because we all eat."

Without immigrant workers, this country would be in the SHIT HOLE. Our food supply would be either EXPENSIVE as fuck, or we would have NO steady food supply. Not to be a racist but, can you actually see African Americans and Whites lined up picking strawberries all day long?.........Right......

Although I commend this effort, it's more political grandstanding than offering a solution. It doesn't address the issue. Immigrants work in more areas than just the fields. They are in construction, restaurants, hotels, etc. The field worker jobs aren't the ones people are talking about when they say that illegal immigrants are taking their jobs.

The numbers in this article suggest there are 600,000 illegal immigrants working in the farming industry. That's less than 4% of the illegals in the country. Probably more like 2%-3%. What are the other 14,000,000 of them doing for work?
I think you already answered your own question.

Construction, housekeeping, dishwashers, landscaping, paving, painting, window cleaning...

In other words, jobs a lot of people DON'T WANT TO DO. Like it or not, that's what immigrants, legal or not, are doing.

Pay me $6.00 an hour to clean a room, when I made that in a week in Mexico.

I'm fucking there.

Willie Lynch still hard at work by setting one race/creed/ethnicity against one another through lack of unemployment. People blaming one another when one must look at self & evaluate what they will do to survive & if the work is there & your are to proud to do it then that is your own fault of being unemployed. We are all slaves to the capitalist lifestyle & it is time for us as a people to be self-sustaining by doing things our ancenstors did & that was hard work, because back then communities survived by working together each and everyone knew they roll & understood what it meant to survive through the winter by the work they did in the spring, summer & autumn. Start buying local organic foods & supporting local businesses that keep money within the community instead of lining the bank accounts of some investor that has never or may never set foot within our communities...

Don't blame the immigrants, blame the companies that are hiring them and ain't willing to pay a liveable wage. Fact is, MOST Americans would not do those low paying jobs to begin with because we're so conditioned to live this greedy American materialistic way of life. Everyone wants a car, TV, computer, a nice place to live and need money do weekend liesure activities. We all wage materialistic battles against our neighbors & family for supremacy and it's sickening as fuck. We're a 1UP nation, plain and simple.

Get the greed out and we might stand a chance. The immigrants are doing it right, they understand life ain't no fucking game like we tend to make it seem. We'd rather sit on our asses, smoke weed, drink, live in Section8 homes, suck money out of others through social programs, instead of making that bread ourselves. Where's our pride? Our ancestors sure had pride, they built this nation.

Im a farm worker, and i work along illegals all day. They tell me their stories of how they got here, and basically get to know each other since the day is long and boring doing the same thing. I spoken to a Salvadorian and told me how he had to cross 2 Countries to get to the US. Then he told me how when he was detained in Mexico by Immigration officers. They treated him like garbage, after being robbed, they deported him.

I have also seen black people, and white people working. These are the people that are on the brink of bankruptcy. I have much respect for my parents, and any people who work in any kind of job That dont give up, and settle for less. (homeless, welfare abusers)

Im Hispanic, but we have to be realistic. There is illegals now that have babies born in this country, and then apply for Welfare, WIC, and other bullshit. They do not pay taxes, but they sure get the benefits us permanent Resi's, and citizens get. Not to mention the criminals.

You ever remember when your in elementary school, and the teacher tells everyone to stay quite, but some fucktard winds up talkin, and fucks it up for everyone else? This is what it has come down too. Your skin color represents your culture. Why would you want to be a criminal and misrepresent yourself, and your culture as shit. By Misrepresenting your skin color you ruin it for those who have worked so hard.

"I am not basing my thoughts on race, but whats better for me financially. If we have a reform, the people of the United States will wind up paying more taxes because of a bigger population wanting government aid."

"Would you like a complete stranger coming into your house sleeping, eating your food, and never contribute to rent?"

The unemployment rate for construction workers is estimated to be as high as 27%. For hotel workers it's around 6%. So there are plenty of people in those industries who would disagree with you.

Again, this article only addresses 4% of the problem, which was my point.

United Farm Workers are part of a Union Federation called Change to Win which includes:

International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT)
Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA)
Service Employees International Union (SEIU)
United Farm Workers (UFW)
United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW)
United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America

These are some important unions fighting for workers rights in industries you directly mentioned.
