good brands to keep in mind are:

Maxtor, Western Digital

maxtor is somewhat average, but i have it and its reliable.....but on the other hand, western digital is some goodass shit....its expensive though i think, but its the best hard drive (external or internal) out there....always reliable

I do NOT recommend Maxtor OR Seagate. Western Digital has it on lock right now, and they are no more expensive than either.

I bought one of those 500gig My Book Western Digital HD's off of newegg.com for like 220 or some shit. It's worth it if you own a fat ass music collection...or even movie collection. I'm gonna put my whole archive of music on that shit.

Well if you look you'll see the 320GB version is originally more and is on a bigger sale. I have the 250Gb one and it works great. I also have an extra 250GB (same exact one sealed) if you want to buy it.

And I always use Western Digital or Seagate. Fuck a Maxtor, nothing but problems.

If you get an external HDD, I highly recommend buying a high speed USB 2.0 PCI card($10-15). I was running my external drive through a regular USB(1.1) and it takes awhile to transfer big files onto it, but when I upgraded my USB it's just as fast as an internal hard drive.
