From today's Vallejo paper...
Smith Brothers Have Both Been in Trouble Before
By J.M. BROWN, Times-Herald staff writer
Orindall Jack, a 25-year-old Sacramento rapper seriously injured during a double shooting outside a friend's Vallejo apartment Wednesday, remained in critical condition Thursday at John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek, Detective Jason Wentz said.
Jack's friend, 23-year-old Benolter Gambles, who was also shot, remained at the same hospital. Details of his condition were not available, but police say his injuries were less severe than Jack's.
The suspects, Gambles' upstairs neighbor, Pierre F. Smith, and brother Kareem D. Smith, remained without bail in Solano County Jail Thursday charged with two counts each of attempted murder. The duo are scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. today in Superior Court, Fairfield.
Arrest reports released Thursday show detectives believe Pierre Smith, 27, was the gunman. He was arrested Wednesday night after turning himself in at police headquarters in the presence of an attorney. Kareem Smith, 26, was arrested earlier Wednesday at a residence on Seacrest Drive.
Also Thursday, both brothers refused jailhouse interviews. But court records revealed the Smith brothers have been in trouble before, including various drug, robbery and battery charges.
Pierre Smith, who has used the alias Malik Wright, pleaded no contest Oct. 9 to a charge of possessing marijuana for sale, court records show.
The charge stemmed from an arrest Sept. 29, when he was pulled over by police for not wearing a seatbelt.
When police determined his passenger had an outstanding warrant, they searched his vehicle and found marijuana packaged for sale, court records show. That incident followed an arrest in June for a charge of marijuana possession, to which Smith pleaded guilty.
Kareem Smith, who police say is a mental health worker with Telecare Solano ACT in Fairfield, was charged in August 1997 with the armed robbery and assault of Lathan Williams. Williams, a convicted armed robber, is the Vallejo rapper whose one-time teenaged girlfriend Daphne Boyden was shot and killed during the 1996 abduction of their infant son Le-Zhan Williams.
It's unclear if Kareem Smith was convicted of robbing and attacking Williams because full court records on the case were not immediately available Thursday. Police confirm, however, that he is a parolee convicted of felony assault charges.
In Wednesday's attack, police say Pierre Smith shot Jack and Gambles several times each with a handgun. He and his younger brother also allegedly kicked one of the victims before fleeing.
Kareem Smith drove the car and discarded the weapon, his arrest report said. Police recovered a weapon, but did not say where.
