So i had a shitload of people on another forum asking me to hook them up with some good DNB/Jungle selections... and being at work with 3 more hours of having nothing to do at all, I spent some time on putting together all of the info and tracks I thought people would dig. Wasnt even thinking about the siccness at the time until I came to this board and realized some of you would probably be interested in checking at least some of it out. Lots of different styles of music within the spectrum of DNB.. imo its way too versatile of a genre to even be categorized all under the same name.. Anyway, im just gonna copy/paste it straight here, hopefully it doesnt fuck up:

There are 9 mixes total, 3 from each generalized category who's name's are unofficial and basically just my own descriptions of the contents. Technically there are over 20 subgenres of Jungle/DnB, which only the really hardcore fans would ever even care about. And even then, some people don’t like the labels at all. But I myself find the separation is a good thing because the genre is much more varied than most people realize, even ones who have been listening and have been fans for a while.

I: Hard/Dark
“Darkcore” and “Darkstep” are two of the most popular genres to the hardcore fans. I would say the majority of fans listen to darker and harder DNB. It’s more raw, more active, and suited more for underground raves where the music needs to be more intense and less clubbish.

A) Andy C – The Essential Mix

There’s really no other choice to put first on the list. Andy C is arguably the best technical jungle DJ in the world. His energy, track selection, and unique mixing are all better than pretty much anyone else in the genre. He only buys dubplates, which are basically ‘destroyed’ and used up after ~50 plays on the turntable, and it costs $50,000 to book his ass for an event, which is almost as high as Oakenfold and Tiesto’s bitch asses. But the crowd he will pull is worth it. This mix is 2 hours long and represents the DNB world as a whole.

B) Kronos – The Beginning

Kronos is a local L.A. DJ who actually doesn’t primarily spin jungle. That’s because he’s a musical genius and any genre he attempts to get into, he immediately becomes a master of both track selection and of mixing the genre. Elitest, veteran DNB heads respect him, as well as the newcomers who like more “appealing” tune tracks – that’s really hard to do. Being praised from the entire spectrum of listeners is nearly unheard of in any electronic genre. But anyway, this mix is really dark. Its robotic and futuristic. Watch out because a couple of the tracks are really erratic and.. well.. not exactly aesthetically appealing at first. Sometimes I have to fast forward through a couple of them because its simply too intense and machine-like. But overall this mix is hard as shit.

C) Lowtek – Operation Restart

A good friend of mine and I watched him evolve from a simple partier into a quality DJ within a span of about 18 months. I always promote his mixes as much as I can, because they represent a good example of what the majority of West Coast DNB heads listen to every weekend at their chosen events. A couple tracks aren’t good – track 5 being one of them, I even pleaded with him to burn that record and throw it in the dumpster because its nothing but an annoying piece of shit. The tracks arent labeled on these mixes but youll know when it hits. BUT, other than that, this is a great mix, his best one. Its solid all the way through, not just for the first half like a lot of dj’s mixes are.

II: Neutral/Progressive
“Jump Up” is the official name for this style, and it includes jungle songs with catchy tunes and a really active and energetic feel to them. Also the kind that best suits MC’s rapping over the beat. Everyone loves jump up unless they are really jaded and overly elitest.

A) Philly B – Resonate: A Drum And Bass Soundscape.

Very very flowing and consistent. Track selection is amazing, and mixing is so flawless that you often don’t even realize when the track has changed. Uplifting, euphoric. It’s like listening to a ‘dream’ influenced sound but filled with action.

B) Miss Represent – January 2006 Mix

A female DJ, one of the baddest chicks I’ve come across in in the female DNB DJ world. This mix didn’t get me excited at first. Gave it a few more listens.. here and there.. and at some point it clicked and I had been missing something all along, and fully realized how powerful and quality this mix really is. She mixes popular songs that everyone loves with lesser known tracks that fit in perfectly. The bass on this one hits HARD sometimes, and there are a couple of reggae/vocal based tracks that I hadnt heard previously (which is very, very uncommon). DON’T SKIP THIS ONE! …

C) Aphrodite – Urban Junglist

So earlier I said I never fucked with the mainstream popular cd’s that you could possibly find at music stores and best buy. Well I guess I lied when it comes to a few exceptions. And I would usually not even talk about Aphrodite if im conversing with other junglists, but it cant be denied that his style is very suitable for newcomers and casual listeners of the genre. This mix has a bunch of tracks that are pretty quality. And some that arent. But overall its very decent – “Barcelona” is one of the best dnb tracks of all time, and this is where I heard it first, so that was cool. But overall, don’t praise Aphrodite too much, he’s sort of washed up these days.

III: Liquid Funk
This genre is fairly new in comparison – first began to grow steadily around the year 2001/2002. It’s exploded into it’s own solid world, and is the main selection for events/clubs with a more laid back and ‘classy’ feeling. It’s really jazzy, funky, and often includes elements of reggae and dub. I personally love this shit. It goes extremely well with lazy ass days where you just want to relax. This style is probably the best choice when youre high because of how stimulating it is to the brain. Its overwhelming sometimes...

A) DJ Whizard – From The Top

This is the mix that introduced me to Liquid Funk. At first I wasn’t down with the sound. But 2 years later, I realize this mix is so damn quality and representative of the subgenre as a whole. You won’t be disappointed, lots of jazzy elements!

B) Samba – December 2005 Mix

The most peaceful and positive vibed drum and bass mix I’ve ever heard, and probably ever will hear, because it’s chilled-music perfection. This is the mix for the end of the night when you just want to relax. This is the mix to prove Drum and Bass itself is more than what a single ‘genre name’ can describe. It has elements from so many different styles, and after it’s all done, you feel like you never want to listen to hard music again. This is about as ‘light’ as liquid funk can get and some of the tracks are too light to even be considered that. But its still active and it wont put you to sleep. Itll just relax you. THIS IS PERFECTION within the type of music it is representing.

C) High Contrast – Racing Green [SINGLE TRACK]

I have more liquid funk mixes if anyone wants them, but those two I listed above should keep you happy for WEEKS if you’re into their style of sound. For this last pick, the only real option in my mind was to share this single track, for anyone who I haven’t yet dumped it on (probably not many of you though). In my opinion, and that’s a ‘big’ opinion since everyone has their own favorite track.. but imo, this is the most solid and complete piece of electronic music ever produced with a computer. There are no flaws in it. The structure of it, the flow, the buildup – peak – breakdown method.. its all perfection. So uplifting, and especially when under the influence of marijuana, It becomes so euphoric that its often almost ‘too’ powerful on the mind to handle. I’ve had pull over on the road before, when listening to it on my car system, just because I was so into the music during the peak of the song.

I was into Jungle when we used to go dancin at clubs and 'thizzin' before they called it that. We had a DNB dance team and everything. Funny cause we was all hella ghetto at raves before going to raves was the thing to do and everybody and they momma went.

I've been away from all that shit for awhile tho - Liquid Funk? What the fuck? Ima have to peep this.

My fav group is AK-1200. I saw em when they did the 'mixed live' show with MC Navigator.

Haha yeah, i was way down with it back then (the scene) before it became a fad and started going downhill around 2001. 01-04 it was mainstream crap but i was still supportive.. because i knew the shit would become more genuine again (and starting 06, it has been quality shit coming through without so many fake heads).

But yeah Liquid Funk is the shit dude. If you like jazzy/funky stuff, thats the genre to check out. Its not as hard bu its definitely more groovy than the others

AK1200 is cool.. he plays with a group now.. "planet of the drums" with dieselboy and dara and a couple MC's.

tight, im glad a lot of you are checkin em out!.. thats more than I expected.

About the other types.. for sure. sub-genre analyzing is my thing.. haha.. a section of other hardcore fans of electronic genres get mad at me for that and say "its all the same shit, stop dividing our world!" But i really disagree with them, and I like to hear the differences. How you gonna compare that LowTek to that High Contrast? haha, aint gonna happen.

the main genres "these days" are:

Darkstep/Darkcore, which are both basically the harder stuff that doesn't necessarily provide a constant "flow" of the beat. Its erratic, twisted, and does whatever the fuck it wants. Thats why elitist fans will appreciate this genre more once they have been in the jungle scene for years. Because theres no end to how extreme it will go on the spectrum of dnb. And even though it can be erratic, theres still definitely an art to where the producer places the drums in the track. You cant get retarded with it.

Techstep: This is another really 'hard' genre, defined by really hard bass kicks that usually come in louder and more defining than the rhythmic "drums" (so the beat is like "KICK KICK drumdrumdrumdrumdrum KICK drumdrum KICK. .. that looks hell of stupid on paper but you get what i mean i mean). Its a really technical genre and its not really one of my faves because of how mechanical and un-organic it is.. but its still cool at parties for sure.

Liquid Funk is huge.. have already explained that one above.

I explained Jump Up too, which is probably the most "widespread" subgenre, and i would say the tracks in this style make up more % total than any other.

And then theres the style that is basically THE west coast style. And actually now that i think about it, i feel fucking guilty for not putting up any mixes of it. I will later, since its umm, kinda the equivalent of what Bay Area Rap is to the rest of the dnb world. Actually thats stretching it, but regional wise.. its almost exclusively played in L.A. and sometimes S.F. but rarer.

And that genre is Ragga Jungle. Its half drum and bass, half dub. Lots of reggae elements obviously. Lots of MC's spitting over the beat, mostly jamaican styled.

Its not my favorite of 'em, I still prefer a constant flow of beat over erratic beats, but i definitely highly respect it for its uniqueness and dedicated fan base.

ISHKUR changed Electronic Music appreciation
just by building a simple website

click on "jungle" for those wanting to go right to the dnb subgenres.

Ishkurs Guide To Electronic Music

some of you guys will spend HOURS on that site. In one sitting. Im not even joking about the "hours" part either if you get really into it. That web of flash samples is straight up knowledge and experience to such a high degree.

edit: but oh yeah forgot to mention.. his descriptions of the genres are funny as fuck sometimes. He makes fun of pretty much everything, and you cant tell if hes serious or not, he talks straight shit on his own hobby.. hahaha

Ishkur's guide is cool but it needs to be updated. I remember checking it out a long time ago and it's still the same.
yeah hes currently working on 3.0 which is probably going to be the biggest project anyone has ever done for electronic music in its history. I hear hes spending over $5,000 to get the required materials he needs to make the most comprehension set of the entire web of music genres in the world. this is including rap/hiphop (which technically is an electronic genre)
