I think it is absolutely necessary. What the fuck is anyone weighing less than 250 gonna be able to realistically do to Brock? I think if Brock dominates for long enough it will become a reality.

same problem in boxing.

You have Wlad Klitschko who is 6'6 247 pounds of pure muscle and Vitali Klitschko who is 6′ 7½ and 250 pounds of pure muscle.

Not much anyone can do against these guys. The last great big guy was Lennox Lewis who was 6′ 5″ 250 pounds himself. Everyone else just gets chopped down.

Fuck that dumb shit. U act like brock and others like him wouldnt continue to drop weight to make the hw division. Or would u rather see top level guys like brock fight a bunch of huge 300+ lb fat asses?

I vote no, just because if weight was a deciding factor then HWs would eat and pack on more. If they want to weigh in at 215 against someone coming in at 240 then that is their issue. Nothing is stopping them from bulking up.

It's more of a height issue that they are having troubles with.

HEAVYWEIGHT....YES
SUPER HEAVYWEIGHT...NO

I LIKE TO SEE THE HEAVYWEIGHTS STAND UP AND BANG. HOWEVER, IS THAT ALL WE CAN EXPECT FROM THEM? I GUESS IT COULD BE GOOD OR BAD, DEPENDING ON WHO YOU ASK. ON THE OTHER HAND, I LIKE TO SEE THE OTHER GUYS IN THE LOWER WEIGHT CLASSES EXECUTE THOSE MUAY THAI AND BJJ MOVES TOO THOUGH.

Most guys aren't physically capable of being 240+ and being effective though (naturally). You need a certain and very unique body frame to pull that off. If you're 6'0 and try to get to 250 of pure muscle, that shit aint gonna work out well.

And we've seen this over and over against the Klitschko's. Some guys come in light (from 205-215) some guys come in heavy. The problem is none of these guys have been genetically gifted like the klitschko's, so they are either just too damn small, or they gain too much weight which makes them too slow and/or too fat, which in turn can make them in poor conditioning, meaning they'll run out of gas after 4-5 rounds.

How many heavyweights actually cut weight to make the heavyweight limit? 3? Most heavyweights are around 240-265. If you're floating around 230 and your finding size is a problem, you need to cut to LHW.

I wouldnt mind watching brock fight 300 pounders. Fuck it.

Like 206 said, people just dont have the frame.

Who was that 7 foot tall boxer with garbage technique who still won matches? Big Sky was his nickname? I forget.

Big Sky Tye Fields! haha the Greek God. 6′ 8″ 270 pounds. 43-2 record. Look at this beast:

Best jab of all time:

A better example though is Nikolay Valuev, he actually won a heavyweight title. 7′ 0″, 85" reach, 330 pounds. 50-2 record. Shit just wasn't right:

Granted, both these guys have shit skills but the size advantage alone makes them win most fights. And in the rare occasion you get one of these genetic freaks that is actually talented, like the Klitschko's or a Brock Lesner, forget about it.

Anyone can be 240 if they want too, it's just a matter of how effective they will be, like you said. That's why you can't really put a cap at weights like that, because then you would have to take things like genetics into effect, which wouldnt work.

There is a guy at my gym who is 5'6 240 (muscle, not natural of course) and he looks like a rollie pollie, that wouldnt work at all.

People come in heavier than the brothers and they still can't beat either Klitschko. It all comes down to genetics (height, reach, etc) and skill.
Making a seperate wieght group at that level wouldn't do anything but start a freak show. All my opinion of course.

You have fighters like Brock, the Klitschko's, etc. and that is what makes it entertaining. Who can slay the giant type deal. Plus I throroughly enjoy watching either Klitschko brother batter their opponents into a pulp. I'm a sick person I guess.

also I'm not really arguing one way or the other, I think there would be pluses and minuses for for each. As for boxing I just think it's a weak heavyweight division right now and that's more of a factor than the klitschko's being huge. I don't think they would have survived in the era of Foreman, Ali, Shavers, etc.

I don't think there is enough depth to have a SHW and HW division. Most would cut to this HW division, to avoid guys like Brock and the SHW division would be really small.

If a guy can weigh above 235-240, then he should not have too much of a problem getting to 265, see Frank Mir. Frank always weighed in around the 240 range and he went up where he had to cut to make the 265 and after being KOed by Carwin realized it's not just the weight and is now slowly coming down a little bit.

If you are a HW and weighing under 230 than you should probably be cutting to 205 (LHW). I mean Forest, Couture, Liddel and so on all walk around at 220 or higher but fight at LHW. (except with couture jumping between LHW and HW)

If there was a SHW division, there would be like 3 or so fighters in it, it would eventually phase itself out. I mean it sucks for the 240lbs but hey move up or down.
