My point is he was speaking as if he had the key and knew how to make it today. If your point is independent way is the way then it shouldn't matter what you rap about.
But it does matter. It's still business and you still have to satisfy your buyers. Gangsta Rap did make him, it made a LOT of people, but it doesn't define him as an artist. Gangsta Rap sold back then because it was new, it was fresh, and people were speaking out against it which made it that much more appealing to the young public. It doesn't sell anymore...people want fresh shit again. So, yea, if you want to make real money in this business, you gotta come with different shit. Content will always matter, indie or major.
Folks saying that Quick should stick to what made him is like telling Prince to stick to the 1999 formula, Ralph Tresvant to stick to the New Edition style, or Quincy Jones to stick to the shit he did in the 1980's.
