Floyd Mayweather Jr on Chico's passing:

"Boxing has lost a great warrior and a gifted athlete. Diego Corrales had the heart of a champion, and while we were competitors in the ring, he was someone who I greatly respected and will be remembered for his spirit and passion in and out of the ring. The boxing community lost a great champion this week and he will be truly missed. My condolences go out to his wife Michelle, his five children and the rest of his family and friends."

Ricky Hatton said he was "absolutely heartbroken" following the news that former world champion Diego Corrales had died in an accident on Monday.

I'm going to dedicate my next fight to Diego Corrales, And obviously I'm sure Jose Luis Castillo, being a former opponent of his, would like to do the same."

"I was absolutely heartbroken. I met him a couple of times and he was a fighter I've been linked with fighting in the past."

"I couldn't believe it when I heard the news.

"I'm really saddened because he's a fighter's fighter, a real man's fighter, very passionate when he got in the ring, always went forward, was always in good fights.

He always used to gee the crowd up before his fights and when you lose a character like that from boxing it's always a very, very sad day for the sport."

____

Jose Luis Castillo was very saddened after learning that Diego Corrales had passed away in a motorcyle accident. "I was very surprised and upset when I heard about Chico. It really is tragic when something like this happens. My heart goes out to his family who I know he cared a lot about. I always liked Chico. We had what I would call as a friendly rivalry when we got into the ring. We had two amazing fights and our names will be linked forever. For me it was a privilege of knowing Chico and being part of such great fights."

____

Vic Darchinyan, IBF flyweight champion stated. "It is a tragedy that such a great boxer and good friend should die at such a young age. I met and trained with Diego on two different occasions while I was training for fights in the USA. He was training for Jose Luis Castillo. He was a true gentleman and outstanding champion. I would like to offer my condolences to his family and friends. He was a good man."

Family, friends, fans pay tribute to Corrales

LAS VEGAS -- Diego "Chico" Corrales was in an open casket Tuesday, surrounded by flowers and his prized boxing belts, as an overflow crowd gathered to say their last goodbyes to the former lightweight and super featherweight champion.

Corrales died May 7 after crashing his high-speed motorcycle into the back of a car near his Las Vegas home -- two years to the day after a lightweight title unification victory over Jose Luis Castillo that many boxing writers considered the fight of the year.

Police have blamed speed and rider inexperience for the crash.

About 400 people came to pay their respects, so many that some had to stand at the back of the chapel. Corrales' five children were there, along with his widow, who is pregnant with a baby who will be named Diego Chico Corrales Jr.

"Too bad there weren't this many people at his fights," one man said.

Corrales' funeral came less than two weeks after a service for another athlete who, like Corrales, lived his life hard and died young. That gathering took place far from the bright lights of Las Vegas, in Tupelo, Miss., where friends and family remembered St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock as a prankster with a good heart.

Corrales and Hancock were in different sports, but turned out to share a lot in common. Both were 29 and died way too young, and both were killed in accidents that could have been avoided.

Hancock was drunk and talking on a cell phone when he rear-ended a tow truck in St. Louis. Corrales was on a racing motorcycle he had bought just days earlier when he lost his life on a Las Vegas street.

Toxicology reports are still pending on Corrales, who had a history of drunken driving and was riding without a license. But Tuesday wasn't a day to talk about that. It was a day to remember the man, not his weaknesses.

At the memorial, a referee doubled as the minister. Richard Steele handed it as effortlessly as he would a 12-round heavyweight title fight. He talked, as others did, about the magnificent 2005 fight with Castillo that defined Corrales' career, and how he managed to get up from two 10th round knockdowns to win it.

Steele remembered working another fight involving Corrales, when he was knocked down repeatedly by Floyd Mayweather Jr. but kept getting up and saying he was all right.

"I can hear him saying right now to God -- 'Man, I'm all right,' " Steele said.

Here's another article from yahoo :

Farewell to Corrales
By Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports
May 15, 2007

LAS VEGAS – Some of the biggest names in boxing passed through the doors of the Palm Mortuary on Tuesday, barely noticing the reed-thin man with a scraggly patch of red hair standing out front in the scorching sun clutching a tattered newspaper against his chest.

The man watched as promoters, managers, fighters, friends and family gathered to pay their final respects to Diego Corrales, the ex-junior lightweight and lightweight world champion who died in a May 7 motorcycle accident near his home.

Michael Bruce said he didn't know Corrales, has no connection to the boxing business and only met him once, but said he couldn't miss the funeral.

"I love boxing and I wish all boxers were like Diego, but that's not why I'm here," he said. "I'm here because of this."

Bruce pulled the newspaper away from his chest to reveal a photo of an exultant Corrales after his epic May 7, 2005, knockout victory over Jose Luis Castillo. On the side of the photo was scrawled barely legible writing: "Michael, thanks for being such a great fan. Diego Corrales."

Corrales signed the newspaper for him outside of a Las Vegas restaurant, Bruce said. Corrales was going to meet friends, but made them wait for more than an hour as he stood in front and signed autographs and spoke to his fans, Bruce said.

It was, according to Corrales' close friend Pat Lamparelli, the type of thing Corrales did every day – he was one of the meanest fighters in the ring, but he was kind and caring outside of it.

Lamparelli, who was an honorary pall bearer, said he learned not to go to movies he wanted to see badly if he was with Corrales.

"We'd never get in," Lamparelli said. "People would see him and they'd flock to them. A lot of guys would just smile and walk past. Some guys would sign as they walked into the theater.

"But not Diego. He would stand there and talk and take pictures and sign things for them. By the time he was done, the movie would be two-thirds over."

During the service, Corrales was hailed as a man of compassion and courage.

Former referee Richard Steele, an ordained minister who conducted the ceremony, relayed a story of how Corrales kept a promise to attend a charity golf tournament Steele was sponsoring on May 9, 2005.

It was only two days after Corrales had stopped Castillo in the 10th round of that fight at Mandalay Bay that has been hailed as one of the greatest bouts ever.

"I had his picture on the promotional stuff, but after that fight, I never expected him to be there," Steele said. "No way. There was no chance. I told everybody, Diego's not going to be able to come. He was too beat up. He couldn't even open his eyes."

But a swollen, sore and battered Corrales did, in fact, show up, keeping his commitment and leaving a lasting impression upon Steele.

Boxers Shane Mosley, Bernard Hopkins, Chris Byrd, John Ruiz, Kevin Kelley, Samuel Peter and Wayne McCullough; promoters Bob Arum and Gary Shaw; referees Steele, Joe Cortez and Tony Weeks and trainers Roger Mayweather, Kenny Adams and Dickie Woods attended the service.

Corrales' manager, James Prince, split the costs of the funeral with Shaw.

Showtime executive Ken Herhman said the network was producing a tribute to Corrales that it would air on June 9.

LAS VEGAS -- Boxer Diego "Chico" Corrales was driving drunk at more than three times the legal limit when he crashed his motorcycle and died, police said Tuesday.

"It's quite possible that had he not been impaired, he could have prevented his accident," Las Vegas police Sgt. Tracy McDonald said after toxicology tests showed Corrales' blood-alcohol content was 0.25 percent. The legal limit for drivers in Nevada is 0.08 percent.

Former two-division champ Diego Corrales was one of the fiercest fighters of his era.

"Bottom line, no one else did anything wrong," McDonald said of an investigation that found speed was a factor and no drugs were in Corrales' system when he died May 7 at age 29. "He basically killed himself."

Corrales had a history of drunken driving and was riding without a valid license, court officials and the state Department of Motor Vehicles have said.

Pat Lamparelli, a Corrales family friend, said Tuesday he was not surprised to learn that Corrales had been drinking before he crashed his 2007 Suzuki while trying to pass another vehicle on a busy residential street about seven miles west of the Las Vegas Strip.

"We did know he did drink," Lamparelli said, speaking for Corrales' pregnant wife, Michelle Corrales. "That's what he used to do. That's public knowledge as far as his DUIs and things like that. Unfortunately, that was one of his demons."

Those close to him also knew Corrales as intelligent, charismatic and a risk-taker who never turned down an autograph and liked high-risk sports like scuba diving and snowboarding.

Michelle Corrales is pregnant and due to deliver the couple's fourth child next month, a son to be named Diego Jr., Lamparelli said. The couple had been trying to reconcile after separating earlier this year.

Lamparelli said family members did not know where Corrales had been before the crash. He was wearing a helmet, but died of head injuries, the Clark County coroner said. The cause of death was ruled an accident.

The coroner tested for 25 drugs and found no legal or illegal substances in Corrales' system, McDonald said, adding that while investigators did not complete calculations of how fast he was riding it was clear Corrales was "well above" the posted speed limit of 35 mph when he crashed.

The Nevada DMV has said Corrales' vehicle and motorcycle licenses were revoked in July 2006 for a drunken driving conviction on an October 2005 arrest.

He faced arrest stemming from a failure to appear in January in a Las Vegas court on a March 2006 DUI arrest, the Clark County district attorney's office said. Charges in that case also included speeding and evading a police officer.

Corrales fought most of his career at 130 pounds, winning lightweight and featherweight titles while compiling a record of 40 wins and five losses, with 33 knockouts.

The crash occurred two years to the day after his most memorable fight, a bout against Jose Luis Castillo in Las Vegas that the Boxing Writers Association of America and numerous boxing publications called the fight of the year.
