That term always struck me as an insult to the Old school Bay Area artist that laid the foundation down. It's as if they were saying to the Industry "we're not ancient like them rappers from the early 90's, we got real mic skills."

i think it was more of a "the old school shit was hot then, but it died out. so here is some new shit comin from the bay."
