Naw the lead singer didnt write any of their songs. He was on heroin in the early 90's and back then their writer was the member who wrote the majority of their songs (literally like 98% of them through the years) Martin Gore. Dave (the lead singer) barely got to start writing on Playing The Angel, and I think he did 2 tracks total.

Emo actually started in the mid 80's in Washington DC as a break off of the hardcore scene out there. But it was actually good music unlike 95% of these "Emo" bands today which aren't even really Emo if you get right down to it.
