Sick Freak
Angelo Vidal Mendoza, sitting in a wheelchair and wrapped in a pink blanket from his feet to his neck, came to court Tuesday when his arraignment was delayed a week.
Mendoza 34, is accused of mayhem, torture and child cruelty in the biting injuries to his 4-year-old son's eyes and hands.
The boy, Angelo Mendoza Jr., lost his left eye and has limited vision in his right eye. He is living in a foster home and is reportedly doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances.
The father has waived his right to a preliminary hearing so the purpose of the arraignment, now set for June 23, is to set a trial date.
Police reports say the boy was attacked on April 28. Minutes later, the father left his apartment, went to a nearby vacant backyard and cut up his own legs with an ax and a broken ceramic plate, police said.
Mendoza tried to make it appear that gang members attacked him, police reports say.
