Some of you may recall laughing at me when I predicted last pre-season that da bears would win “at least 11, maybe 12” games (they would have won 12 if they didn’t throw their final game vs. Minnesota).
This year I see no reason why they shouldn’t be able to do the same (assuming there are no serious injuries of course), if not better.
One little unheard of stat from this year is that the Bears return all 22 starters from last year's team -- a shocking development in today's NFL. This means most all the players have experience working together and are familiar with the team.
There still remains a question at the QB position between Grossman and Griese. Lovie Smith has stated Grossman will start, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Greise ends up starting and does a better job than the unproven and injury prone Grossman.
With the style of Bears football, all the QB needs to do is protect the ball and stretch the field occasionally. Griese should have no problem at all fitting right in.
At RB, surprisingly Benson has been named the starter even though Thomas Jones rushed for over 1,300 yards last season (the most da bears have seen since Walter Payton), despite the fact that every defense they played knew the ball was going to Jones the majority of the plays, since Kyle Orton was starting QB and cant throw for shit.
If healthy, I predict both RB’s battling for the starting position and both contributing greatly to the offense. A great one-two punch.
As far as their defense goes, it should be much of the same as last year but even better considering the experience they all have with eachother. Their D should rank #1 in the NFL.
As demonstrated against the Charges and Rashied Davis' 100 yrd kickoff return, their special teams once again should be in a class of it’s own and will produce points and great field position.
Their main weakness appears to be WR depth, only Muhsin Muhammad has proven himself as a reliable WR. But is it really a concern with this style of football?
They will easily win their conference- Minnesota, Green Bay and Detroit (all with rookie coaches) suck ass. They should finish the year with one of the best records in the NFC.
Lovie Smith stated their goal is to win the superbowl this season. They definitely should be contenders and my guess is the NFC will come down to the same teams as last year (Seattle, Carolina, Tampa Bay (possibly Dallas, but unlikely)).
Schedule:
Sep 10 @Green Bay
Sep 17 Detroit
Sep 24 @Minnesota
Oct 1 Seattle XXXXXX
Oct 8 Buffalo
Oct 16 @Arizona
Week 7 BYE
Oct 29 San Francisco
Nov 5 Miami ??
Nov 12 @N.Y. Giants XXXXXX
Nov 19 @N.Y. Jets
Nov 26 @New England XXXXXX
Dec 3 Minnesota
Dec 11 @St. Louis
Dec 17 Tampa Bay XXXXXX
Dec 24 @Detroit
Dec 31 Green Bay
I placed X’s next to the games that pose any real trouble, ? next to Miami because who fucking knows how they’ll turn out this year. They have a real tough road trip in November which could cause trouble, but overall their schedule looks pretty good if your a bears fan.
