lol @ the "source" of the possible OTC cold medicine excuse, it's a wack ass blog, it ain't even a respectable reporter.

I don't even know why this blog reporter brought it up any damn way considering they bring false positives for amphetamines and not natural steroids. Just some over hyped Sonnen fan trying to get any kind of argument going.

Reports: Chael Sonnen Failed Test Due to 'Abnormally High' Testosterone Levels

Chael Sonnen tested positive for abnormally high levels of testosterone in his UFC 117 drug screening, California state athletic commission executive director George Dodd told media outlets on Monday afternoon, finally naming the substance that could subject Sonnen to a one-year suspension as well as a fine.

According to Dodd, who spoke to SI.com, Sonnen admitted to him during testing that he had used an illegal performance enhancer prior to the middleweight championship bout against Anderson Silva. Dodd did not name the specific drug Sonnen allegedly admitted to using, and Sonnen did not indicate any usage on a mandatory pre-fight questionnaire.

The CSAC has yet to formally release an official statement on the matter, and neither Dodd nor Sonnen responded to attempts for comment by MMA Fighting.

Testosterone is a naturally occurring substance in the body, but elevated levels can signal steroid use. Athletes that have been busted for high testosterone levels include baseball slugger Manny Ramirez, NBA star Rashard Lewis and cyclist Floyd Landis.

Sonnen, a longshot underdog in the fight, squared off with longtime reigning champion Silva and surprisingly dominated him for more than four rounds before falling into a stunning, fight-ending triangle submission in the fifth. For his efforts, he had been scheduled to receive an immediate rematch. Now the CSAC suspension is likely to cost him another chance at the belt.

The 33-year-old Oregonian earned his title opportunity with three straight wins, besting Dan Miller, Yushin Okami and Nate Marquardt in succession, making him a somewhat unlikely challenger to Silva.

In the months between the time the fight was announced and it actually took place, Sonnen (24-11-1) hyped the fight incessantly, building it into a must-see attraction.

Sonnen also ran for political office during the stretch as well, handily winning a Republican primary for a state representative seat in House District 37, though he later withdrew from the general election race.

The usually outspoken star has been mum in the time since the positive test was first reported, and has yet to make any statement. Sonnen reportedly received formal notice of his test failure last Friday and has 30 days in which to file an appeal.

CSAC drug testing was handled by the UCLA Olympic Analytical Laboratory, the world's largest World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited sports drug-testing facility that has also handled anti-doping for the U.S. Olympic committee since 1985.

Good ole test!
Sonnen is my new hero. Ha. It's nice to see an athlete just use basic gear and not get all into other anabolics. He just stayed lean. Had to have been a prop esther.

It's a little hard to pop someone on that though without a baseline to go off of.
It can range from anywhere to 200-800 for anyone between the age of 18-50.
My baseline is 610, I'm 28. They basically need to compare it to a previous test (considering he wasn't on in previous fights).

He should be able to contest is easily though.
High compared to what? Other people? He has nothing to do with other people...
They should let him go, unless he is well over 1200. That's just just abnormal. Even natural test "boosters" won't bring you up that high.

Athletes that have been busted for high testosterone levels include baseball slugger Manny Ramirez.
That's actually an incorrect statement by the writer. Manny got busted for HCG, which is therapy to get your natural test production going again once you come off cycle. Manny was being greedy and cut it to close to baseball season. At the point he used it, his natural test levels were probably that of a 7 year old girl.

Sonnen suddenly silent on accusations

Something is very, very wrong when Chael Sonnen has nothing to say. The fighter, who was lauded for a terrific 23-minute performance against Anderson Silva in early August, is now a virtual shut-in thanks to California Athletic Commission executive director George Dodd, who confirmed Sonnen tested positive for performance enhancers -- a charge prompted by abnormally high levels of testosterone.

Sonnen, whose personality is often outrageous, became nearly incomprehensible with the high standard he built for himself leading into the Silva fight. He said he would beat up the champion, take his lunch money, steal his book bag, etc. And that's more or less what he did. But now all of that hustle and effort may have an asterisk next to it.

(Fighters can be given a pass from testosterone supplementation if they're taking it for a legitimate medical reason, specifically to elevate abnormally low levels to a normal range, but if Sonnen's results were off the charts the California commission either has a different idea of "elevated" or he exceeded any reasonable medical use.)

Sonnen is far from unique. He is the fourth of Silva's UFC opponents to test positive for drugs at some point in their respective careers. What makes his situation regrettable is that he was popped immediately following a crucial fight. Worse, his pro wrestling shtick didn't leave him much room for personal error, including a monologue on how Lance Armstrong's alleged use of banned substances gave him cancer. You make a statement like that, and you better not burn a hole in the cup you're asked to pee in.

This development breaks what had been a fairly long stretch of quiet for the UFC. The last title contender that tested positive was Sean Sherk in the summer of 2007, a charge Sherk vehemently denied. Right or wrong, PEDs remain a staple of sports. The only real debate is how best to mask usage so that it remains an unspoken topic.

The accused are hardly the only athletes using pharmaceutical help at this level. They just happen to be the unlucky few who get tagged for it. Aside from the prohibitively expensive method of blood work, the best way to dissuade athletes from using is completely random testing -- no notice, no pattern, just a demand for a sample at any time during the year. Although some commissions have a policy in place to execute that strategy, few (or none) ever actually put it into practice with any conviction. As long as the system remains predictable, fighters will find ways around it.

It's unrealistic to expect that drug protocol will be uniform from top to bottom or from state to state. As the stakes get higher, it should be up to promotions and commissions to work in tandem to create a solution that will treat key bouts with the attention they require. Every fighter on a card can't be tested with blood work and offseason tests. Fine. Focus on the main event and subject those fighters to exhaustive testing. If a contender knows the price of competing for a title is a system that could and would detect any invalid substance in his body, he would be far less likely to get into the habit of using on the road. And because every fighter believes he can one day contend for a title, it should act as a deterrent without breaking any state's bank.

As for Sonnen, his choice is between a sincere confession (if he did as he is accused) and coming up with another gimmick to deflect attention away from the situation. If Sonnen is as straight-talking as he claims to be, he won't dive for cover behind the idea of "tainted supplements" (a popular defense) or a drawn-out semantics argument over testing protocol. If guilty, admitting it goes a long way. Already, there are reports that Sonnen told Dodd he did take a banned substance immediately prior to the fight. Why would Sonnen say that, especially if he had no way of knowing whether Dodd would act on that information and pull him from the card?

In that case, the UFC would quarter him. In this drawn-out scenario, what else can the organization do after the commission has suspended and fined him? The real test of the UFC's sincerity would come when Sonnen's possible suspension is up. Does it schedule a rematch with Silva, basically turning a blind eye to the situation, or does the promotion acknowledge that the fighter has dropped himself down the ladder and will need to fight his way back up? Awarding a title bout to a figher coming off a scandal wouldn't do much to prove that the UFC is anti-PEDs.

Only Silva comes out spotless. Not only did he perform an 11th-hour save of his own butt, he did it injured and against a man who is alleged to have cheated.

It's going to be a rough few months for Sonnen, who also has to deal with the aftershock in a simmering political career in Oregon. But he shouldn't sweat it. The penalty for PED use in those circles? Becoming governor of California.

Chael Sonnen to Appeal Positive Drug Test

Chael Sonnen's camp has released a statement for the first time since it was reported last Saturday night that the middleweight contender tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug following his UFC 117 loss to Anderson Silva.

In an MMA Fighting exclusive, Sonnen's manager, Mike Roberts, wrote that Sonnen will appeal the California State Athletic Commission's claim that he tested positive for "abnormally high" levels of testosterone and that Sonnen will break his silence on the matter in the coming days.

"It is our policy not to comment on pending actions by the Athletic Commission. Chael is consulting with his legal advisors and physicians and will have a statement in the near future. Chael will file an appeal with the CSAC and looks forward to working with the Commission to resolve this matter."

The 33-year-old reportedly received formal notice of his test failure last Friday and has 30 days in which to file his appeal. Once he does file his appeal, it will be heard at the next CSAC commission meeting on Dec. 2 in Sacramento, Calif.

Sonnen is subject to an automatic one-year suspension and $2,500 fine. He was scheduled to fight Silva in a title rematch in Jan. 2011, but that fight is obviously on hold until the CSAC makes a final ruling on the case.

The CSAC has yet to officially announce the positive drug. They were expected to make an announcement Monday afternoon.

Nothing's tarnished .. he was popped for PED's and was triangled. His performance might be tarnished but it means nothing because he lost. It's not like the title is tainted in anyway .. Silva struggled but the only that matters is that he won and he didn't test positive for anything.

I meant in terms of Chael's achievements. I want to see/hear his side of the story, but if it does turn out he was juicing...then everything he's done in MMA will be in question.

I Garnette he has a script.
It's a $350 doctor visit, $500 to run blood, and about $150 a vial of PURE test. I seriously doubt he took a shortcut. Athletes do it the right way. Pharmaceutical grade is as clean as it gets. You have animal, human, and then pharmaceutical (in that order).

Now he is going to contest it. I think he is going to get off, but his name is still tainted to general fans.

This is also why Mayweather wants on going tests. A test before the fight doesn't show everything. The fighter could have already cycled off and brought his hormones back to level by then.

Inject test, beat Silva's ass for 5 rounds.
That's how its done...

I just find it funny that some people is actually defensing this juicing shit talking fag. This dirt bag talked shit about Lance's cancer and Lance never tested dirty. So now all his trailor park fans are mad that their great white hype is a juicer and a fraud. Chael was and is a no body. He will be remembered as a shit talker that cheated and still got choked out. Now do your research on that SLRider510..

I'm not really defending the guy. I applaud him for contesting it and hope he gets excused for having a script. I just think its a great display of how strong anabolics really are, and people need to understand that almost everyone uses or has used at one point. Most fight fans are misled and make a huge deal about it.

Guess what group makes up the majority of my HRT doctors client base?
That's right, MMA fighters.
