According to California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd, Chael Sonnen has been notified that he failed post-fight drug screening following his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117, which was held Aug. 7 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.

“[Sonnen] received his notice yesterday,” Dodd told Sherdog.com shortly after the Shane Mosley-Sergio Mora boxing match ended Saturday night in Los Angeles.

In a conversation the day before, Dodd declined to comment on the situation, other than answering that all fighters from UFC 117 had passed drugs-of-abuse scans, but that the commission was still waiting on performance-enhancing drug screens from the event.

Dodd did not state which banned substance was red-flagged, but with a clean drugs-of-abuse scan it is clear the positive test was for a performance-enhancing substance.

The last major UFC banned-substance case in the state centered on UFC 73’s lightweight title match, which saw both competitors -- Sean Sherk and Hermes Franca -- test positive for PEDs. Both fighters were suspended for one year and fined, though Sherk appealed and had his suspension shortened to six months.

Sonnen is staring at a long layoff if he elects not to appeal or is denied. He was scheduled to rematch Silva Feb. 6 in Las Vegas, but that fight may be delayed or scrapped in light of these allegations.

Text messages to Sonnen went unreturned.

His manager Matt Lindland told Sherdog.com that he was cornering a fighter on the East Coast and had no knowledge of the positive test results.

Silva’s manager Ed Soares, who engaged in some heated exchanges via the media in the build up to the fight, was stunned when asked for his reaction.

“If it’s true, I feel really bad for him,” said Soares. “I know he did it to himself but it is really sad, he put on such a great performance that night. It is just a shame it will be tarnished.”

People have been seeing his bacne for awhile now, not surprised by this at all. Thank god Anderson caught that triangle though, it would've been a disgrace if Chael won the belt and ended Anderson's 4 year streak only to get popped.

There was a thread on sherdog a month ago about how Sonnen was on steroids and how his bacne increased as his UFC performances got better and backed it up with pictures at the weigh-ins showing the increase in bacne. Unfortunately, the poor guy got banned lol.

yeah you did call it man and i remeber saying bacne doesnt mean that your on shit but in this case i tip my hat to you. that whole fight is tarnished now but hey atleast anderson beat him and still got his streak goin.
Well its the type of breakout he had that made me say that, because I know athletes can generally have skin problems. Not to get all Bill Nye but the type of acne you get from steroid usage is different than just normal acne. They are hard red bumps that you can't really pop, there is minimal puss inside of them and they don't form a head. You could tell that's what he had, they weren't run of the mill pimples.

There are things you can use on cycle that prevent that bad of a breakout. Pantothenic acid, Accutane, Dokudami, etc. so I don't know what his deal was. Just bad management.

I would really like to know what substance he tested dirty for, but I doubt they will reveal it.

Nothing's tarnished .. he was popped for PED's and was triangled. His performance might be tarnished but it means nothing because he lost. It's not like the title is tainted in anyway .. Silva struggled but the only that matters is that he won and he didn't test positive for anything.

Chael Sonnen Tests Positive for a "Natural Steroid"

More details emerge on the Chael Sonnen drug saga as George Dodd, the CSAC official that first alerted the media on the failed drug test, talked to Lance Pugmire of the LA Times, and said that Chael tested positive for a "natural steroid", and it happened on his pre-fight drug test:

Chael Sonnen tested positive for a steroid before his Oakland loss to Anderson Silva, CSAC exec. George Dodd tells me... Said a "natural steroid."

He talked about it in detail, and says that the fighter is also looking at a 1-year suspension and a $2500 fine:

Chael Sonnen, the brash Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight contender who nearly defeated champion Anderson Silva in August, tested positive for a steroid before the fight in Oakland and faces a year-long suspension, California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd said Sunday.

Sonnen will have 30 days to appeal his suspension and $2,500 fine, said Dodd, clouding UFC plans for a Sonnen-Silva rematch early next year in Nevada... Dodd said Sonnen’s positive test emerged from a urine sample he gave before the fight that was processed through the UCLA Olympic drug-testing lab.

Sean Sherk also faced the same fine and suspension when he tested positive on his victory over Hermes Franca back in 2007, but he appealed this, and got it reduced to 6 months. Sonnen has remained silent since the news first broke out, but he still has around a month to appeal this suspension. We will keep you updated as more details become available.

Sonnen fails drug test, but could OTC meds be to blame?

California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd revealed this morning that Chael Sonnen failed his UFC 117 post-fight drug screening due to performance-enhancing drugs.

Dodd did not reveal which substance caused Sonnen to fail the test, and it's important to restrain yourself from jumping to conclusions in the matter. Sonnen was sick with the flu in the days leading up to the fight and was taking medications for both -- medications which are known to trigger false positives in drug screening.

The list of over-the-counter drugs that can cause a false positive for amphetamines include:

Nyquil, Contactd, Sudafed, Allerest 12-Hour, A.R.M., Triaminic 12, Ornade, Tavist-D, Dimetapp, Sinex, Neosynephrine, Actifed, Bayer Selectd Maximum Strength Sinus Pain Relief Caplets, Contact Non-Drowsy Formula Sinus Caplets, Dristan Cold Caplets, Maximum Strength Sine-Aid Tablets, Maximum Strengeth Sudafed Sinus Caplets, Maximum Strength Tylenol Sinus Gelcaps, No Drowsiness Sinarest Tabs, Sinus Excedrin Extra Sterength Caplets, Characol Sinus, Drixoral Cold and Flu, Efidac/24, Phenegan-D, Robitussin Cold and Flu. Over-the-counter diet aids containing phenylpropanolamine: Dexatrim, Accutrim. Over-the-counter nasal sprays: Vicks inhaler, Afrin. Asthma medication: Marax, Bronkaid tablets, Primatine Tablets. Prescription medication: Amfeprainone, Cathne, Etafediabe, Morazone, phendimetrazine, phenmetrazine, benzphetamine, fenfluramine, dexfenfluramine, dexdenflurarnine, Redux, mephentermine, Mesocarb, methoxyphenamine, phentermine, amineptine, Pholedrine, hydroymethamphetamine, Dexedrine, amifepramone, clobenzorex, fenproyorex, mefenorex, fenelylline, Didrex, dextroamphetamine, methphenidate, Ritalin, pemoline, Cylert, selegiline, Deprenyl, Eldepryl, Famprofazone

As you can see, Sonnen could have been taking Tylenol Sinus Gelcaps and still failed for amphetamines. Plenty of fans (and mainstream media types) will be quick to judge Sonnen based on the comments he made about Lance Armstrong, but it's important to step back and allow Sonnen to defend himself, to let the process play out, before casting a negative light on him.

Natural steroid is such a loose term.

It was either OTC or scripted. Doctors can prescribe test, HGH, etc. and it's labeled as natural since you are adding chems that the body creates naturally anyways, as long as you don't abuse it and it brings your levels to par (if you are deficient).

If its on the list of banned substances then there is no excuse for it, regardless of the legalities around how you obtain it.

Why are they talking about amphetamines now?
I wouldn't really even classify that as a steroid. There are plenty of "uppers" that he could take pre fight without getting in trouble. The guy isn't going to blatantly use an illegal upper hours/days before the fight and risk getting popped for it.

I don't think I have ever heard of one athlete immediately admitting usage after being found dirty. Most athletes will take it to the grave with them. Everyone always has a story. This one is cold medicine. For his sake I hope he gets away with it...
