If you can't beat 'em, get their autograph.

That was the motto of Dallas Cowboys running back Tashard Choice(notes) Sunday night. After his team was beaten by the Philadelphia Eagles, the 26-year-old running back sought out Michael Vick(notes) to ask for his autograph on a glove. Vick was happy to oblige:

Choice later told The Dallas Morning News that the autograph was for his 2-year-old nephew, who is a big Vick fan. He said:

"My little nephew says he's his brother. My little nephew is 2 years old, so I had to get one for him. I just admire somebody who comes from those circumstances and comes back and proves everybody wrong. I've got nothing but respect for him."

Vick didn't mind the request. "That's probably the first time that's ever happened to me," he said. "But [Choice] is a great guy. It doesn't surprise me." The two have known each other since Choice was introduced to Vick while a player at Georgia Tech.

The move has led to the predictable hand-wringing amongst fans who expect players to dislike opposing players as much as they do, but that's a silly reaction. Choice knows Vick and wanted to do something nice for a child in the family. It's not like he asked him to pose for a bust that he was going to display in the Cowboys locker room.

There are plenty of things Cowboys fans should be frustrated about on Monday morning. This isn't one of them.

And, you have to say, Choice's nephew is going to get an awesome gift. How many other kids at day care will be able to boast of having a Michael Vick-signed glove? But if I may give my young friend some advice, don't be satisfied with just the glove. Uncle Tashard is pocketing a half-million dollars this year in salary. Don't let him get away with giving you something he got for free. You should also be getting a pretty sweet Lego set at the very least.

I have no problem with him asking for an autograph for his nephew.

Don't really have a problem with it. It wasn't for himself. There may be fierce rivals and history, but most sports players respect each other, at least in this generation. Back then? Nope. But Free Agency killed the passion.

He could have been getting it for a family member, etc...

I'm sure some will say that getting it right after a loss is probably the issue..instead of being upset about the loss, you're trying to get his autograph...

Anyway, this might get blown up in the sports media...
this was the big debate on sirius radio today. I dont understand it. Doesn't bother me at all...

I don't have a problem with it. Good for him. However, if I recall he did it right when the clock hit 0:00? Kinda weird that the first thing on your mind is to get Mike Vick to sign your gloves for your nephew is the first thing on your mind after your team got strapped.

exactly!! If I'm a fan i just paid hella bread to watch my team get worked by the eagles the last thing i want to see is a player thats a factor on my squad going to ask for autographs like a groupie! Or even if i was a owner! you have an image to protect when you wear my teams uniform. Pull all that autograph shit off camera on your own time son! Then again we are talking about the dumb ass cowboys here! thats why they aren't in the playoffs they're all hype no work! yea they have all the talent to be a threat but when you got guys that ain't cutthroat and passionate about losing a game to a division rival then you aren't going anywhere. Irvin, Aikman, and smith would've never allowed someone on their squad to go the the eagles and start asking for autographs! they could give a fuck if it was Reggie white himself in a eagles uniform. oh well that my 2 cents! FUCK THE COW-BITCHES!

No problem at all with this....whether it was for himself or someone else....if I was a young player in the league when rice and Tim brown were playing for the raiders....I would have gotten both of their autographs on something if I was playing the raiders....move on

Its whatever. Personally I think the autograph was for himself. Tashard Choice was born and raised in Georgia, went to Georgia Tech and was most likely a Falcons fan growing up and watching Vick tear shit up when he was a Falcon.
