NYPD Cops Allowed 20 ‘Get Out Of Jail Free’ Cards For Friends And Family Per Year

NYPD Cops Allowed 20 ‘Get Out Of Jail Free’ Cards For Friends And Family Per Year | Law & Crime

The unofficial cards are distributed by various police unions throughout the New York City metropolitan area, including the city’s largest police union, the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association (“PBA”).

News of the cards’ existence was verified in a New York Post article published Sunday afternoon. The tenor of the Post’s reporting was a bit odd: focusing on the tender feelings of NYPD officers upset because their allotted number of cards has dwindled from 30 to 20 per person per year.

One New York City cop complained:

They are treating active members like shit, and retired members even worse than shit. All the cops I spoke to were…very disappointed they couldn’t hand them out as Christmas gifts.

According to Sunday’s report in the Post, the courtesy cards are often used to avoid culpability for minor offenses like speeding tickets–with users of the cards operating on the assumption that presenting one to an officer means you’ve got made status within the reaches of the NYPD organization.

A 2004 article from Newsday–approvingly shared on the PBA’s own website–confirms the intent and utility of the courtesy cards. That article notes, “the [PBA] union encourages officers to avoid ticketing cardholders.”

Due to the NYPD’s reputation, however, criminal justice advocates have questioned whether the cards might be used by friends, family and cop-affiliated individuals to avoid punishment for larger crimes. Multiple Twitter users reacted to the news of the “get out of jail free” cards by comparing the NYPD to a criminal, gang-like organization.

Adam Bates, former policy analyst with CATO’s Project on Criminal Justice, posted in response to the news on Facebook, “Cop unions are protection rackets.”

The PBA’s controversial boss, Patrick Lynch, apparently made the decision to limit the annual number of cards given to each active member of the NYPD from 30 to 20–while halving retirees’ allotment from 20 to 10 per person per year. Lynch’s decision was reportedly made after many of the cards were discovered being sold for prices in excess of $200 per card on eBay.

Other police unions which offer similar cards include the Sergeant’s Benevolent Association and the Lieutenant’s Benevolent Association. Cards from all three unions are currently available for purchase.

Law&Crime reached out to the PBA for comment on the cards. The PBA did not deny the existence of the cards, but refused to comment directly. After being transferred, however, a voicemail left with PBA spokesman Albert W. O’Leary was not returned at the time of publication.

Multiple entreaties–by email and phone–made to the NYPD’s own press department and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio‘s office were also not returned.

This story will be updated if and when any of the above-mentioned parties reply.

Indiana man files suit for right to give the finger to an Indiana State trooper

A Terre Haute man is contending in a federal lawsuit that his right to free speech was violated after he was ticketed for showing an Indiana State Trooper his middle finger.
The Tribune Star reports that Mark May is seeking unspecified damages against Indiana State Police Master Trooper Matt Ames.

In the suit, May says Ames cut him off in traffic in pursuit of another driver in August 2017. While Ames was conducting the traffic stop on U.S. 41, May admitted to making the vulgar gesture while he drove past the officer.

May says Ames then pursued May and issued him a ticket for provocation, deemed a Class C infraction in Indiana. The charge comes with a fine of up to $500.

May challenged the decision in Terre Haute City Court, but was found guilty. He asked for it be reviewed in Vigo County Superior Court, which deemed the judgment to be void.

The suit was filed by Kennth Falk, legal director of the ACLU of Indiana, who says May's actions were protected by the U.S. Constitution.

"Mr. May’s gesture, which in no way interfered with the Master Trooper’s lawful activities, was fully protected by the First Amendment," the lawsuit reads. "The stop represents an unconstitutional seizure in violation of the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution.”

Indiana State Police have not commented on the lawsuit.

Burglars targeting police vehicles parked in fenced substation l - Arizona's Family

Police say the suspects likely just jumped the fences or block walls around the property and checked for unlocked cars. Whoever is responsible got away with police tactical gear, weapons, and a badge, among other things.

Among the weapons taken are an AR-15 rifle, a Taser, two large canisters of pepper spray, one police expandable baton, a Glock police-issued handgun and a pocket knife.

Central City Precinct does not appear to have surveillance cameras that could have recorded the suspects in action. Several businesses nearby confirm that police asked them if they had cameras. None did.

The Bay Area CHP reportedly using 'decoy' tech shuttle buses to bait freeway BB gun shooters - SFGate

Following a series of BB gun shootings targeting tech shuttle buses on the freeway, the California Highway Patrol is getting creative to catch the perpetrators.

As NBC Bay Area reports, the CHP is now using "decoy buses" filled with undercover officers as a way to lure the shooter or shooters "in an effort to bring the individual or individuals responsible for these attacks to justice."

In addition to these bait buses, which will go on runs to the South Bay at random times, CHP officers will also periodically ride in actual tech shuttle buses with commuters working for companies like Google and Apple.

The program, the CHP says, will work as sort of an "air marshal program," where the daily commuters won't even necessarily know that there is a trained officer on board. Unmarked cars will also be on patrol between Woodside and Cupertino.

According to ABC 7 News, there have been 20 hits on at least seven buses in the last month and a half. Windows have been cracked, but not shattered.

The hope, as CHP Golden Gate Division Commander Ernest Sanchez said, is that these officers onboard any targeted buses will be "looking at damage on the bus and looking at what angle the projectile is coming from."

As the San Francisco Chronicle reported earlier this week, one charter bus company, called Storer Transportation, has offered a $10,000 reward leading to the arrest of anyone involved.
