Customs and Border Patrol trainee learns firsthand how to conduct an illegal stop, with attempted assault by law enforcement, tazing people for defending their rights, and illegal searches all in one day
Jessica Cooke, a 21-year-old from Ogdensburg, New York, recently graduated from SUNY Canton with a degree in law enforcement leadership and had already applied for a job as a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agent when she was surprised by an impromptu final lesson at a CBP checkpoint on Route 37 in Waddington last week. What she learned—that people who insist on their constitutional rights in this setting run the risk of being roughed up and shot with a stun gun—should help make her a better CBP agent, although CBP may not see it that way.
Cooke was driving from Norfolk to her boyfriend's house in Ogdensburg, the northern border of which is the St. Lawrence River. If you cross the river, you are in Canada, but Cooke was not crossing the river. She nevertheless became subject to the arbitrary orders of CBP agents by driving through one of the country's many internal immigration checkpoints, which can be located anywhere within 100 miles of the border (a zone that includes two-thirds of the U.S. population). For some mysterious reason, she was instructed to pull into a secondary inspection area, where she used her cellphone to record a five-minute video of the stop (below).
After presenting her driver's license, Cooke, who surely learned in college that police (and even CBP agents!) need "reasonable suspicion" to detain someone, asks why she was pulled over. "You guys have no reason to be holding me," she says. A male agent who identifies himself as a supervisor has no explanation for the detention, but he says Cooke will have to wait for a drug-sniffing dog to inspect her car. "Well, they'd better be here soon, because if not, I'm calling 911, and this can all be figured out," Cooke says. "You guys are holding me here against my will." Eventually the female agent who first interacted with Cooke says she seemed nervous—an all-purpose excuse for detaining someone, since people tend to be nervous when confronted by armed government officials.

Wiseman wrote in a Hacker News comment in May about his findings, revealing a month ago what the AP reported today. He also summed up his findings in a blog post Tuesday.

NYPD CHARGED WITH FRAUD AFTER STEALING DEAD MAN’S CREDIT CARD AND BUYING DIAMONDS
New York City, New York – Ymmacula Pierre, A three year veteran of the NYPD is being charged by Manhatten district attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, identity theft and official misconduct for stealing the credit card number of a dead man she encountered on the job, and using it to purchase fancy jewels online from Zales in excess of $3000.
In July of 2014 Pierre was called to make a wellness check of 65 year old architect, Ken Sanden because after concerned colleagues called after he did not show up for work.
He was known to have medical issues.
Pierre arrived to find him dead.
Now, normally, a wellness check does not include checking, and ultimately retrieving personal affects from the person you are supposed to be making sure is ok, but that is exactly what happened.
Pierre jotted down his credit card and email information after using his phone to call his niece to relay the bad news about her uncle, according to reports.
The anticipation for some cheap goods didn’t take long to set in.
Just two days after the discovery this dead mans credit card was used to purchase a diamond ring from zales.
The transaction was flagged and the same niece Pierre had reported the bad news to was notified of the suspicious purchase. An investigation traced the transaction to a computer inside of the home of Pierre’s boyfriend, the same computer was used to access Sanden’s email account.
The ring was to be sent to another address, one Pierre had listed as a reference on her application to NYPD.
Pierre has been charged, has plead not guilty, and was actually allowed out on the street after being charged with multiple crimes.
The officer is currently getting a 30-day unpaid suspension from the NYPD.

Grand Jury Indicts VA Officer That Shot Mentally Ill Man 9X
On Thursday, a Virginia grand jury chose to indict a Norfolk police officer for the fatal shooting of a mentally ill man that took place last year.
Officer Michael Carlton Edington Jr. was indicted on one count of voluntary manslaughter, by jurors who began deliberating Monday, in Norfolk Circuit Court.
Edington shot 35-year-old David Latham nine times, including in the chest and back, during a June 6, 2014 confrontation after the man refused to immediately comply with the officers order to drop a knife while standing in his doorway.
According to his family, David suffered from schizophrenia and had stopped taking his medication, which lead to auditory hallucinations. David ’s mother and sister called 911 the night of the shooting to report he had threatened his brother with a knife.
Police Chief Mike Goldsmith said the arriving officer found Latham holding a knife in the doorway, blocking entry to the house.

I'm pretty glad all these officers are wearing more body cams. Like I said before, all it's going to do is prove how ridiculous peoples reactions to all of these justified shootings are, and provide law abiding citizens with some pretty cool stuff to watch on the internet. Here is one of the latest justified shootings. Now imagine if there wasn't Body camera footage. I can see the headlines: "INNOCENT MAN MURDERED IN COLD BLOOD BY RAGING PIGS", cue looting and riots
Yeah, female officers are mostly a liability for other officers; as was the case here. If that had been a real gun he could've easily shot the male officer dead, and then her. The taser likely wouldn't have deployed effectively / or she would've been shot by then. I read some other article where the brother felt the guy had been feeling pretty down lately, and he probably just wanted to die.

PALESTINE, TX (KLTV) - Two officers involved in a fatal shooting in Palestine will not face charges after an Anderson County grand jury decided Thursday that a fatal shooting was justified.
The officers involved in the shooting - Sgt. Gabriel Green and Officer Kaylynn Griffin - were accused of fatally shooting James D. Bushey, 47, on May 31 at a restaurant. The jury determined Thursday that the use of deadly force was justified.
The Anderson County Criminal District Attorney's Office released this statement on the case:
The investigation into the use of deadly force by officers involved in the May 31, 2015 shooting of James D. Bushey was presented to an Anderson County Grand Jury today (June 25, 2015). The investigation began after Sgt. Gabriel Green and Officer Kaylynn Griffin shot and killed James D. Bushey outside of Applebee's in Palestine, Texas on May 31, 2015.
The officers were investigating a theft that had previously occurred at Wal-Mart and received information that the suspect was hiding in the bathroom at Applebee's. The officers located Bushey and escorted him outside. Once outside Applebee's, Bushey pointed a weapon at officers in a threatening manner and was shot. It was later determined that the weapon was a pellet gun manufactured to resemble a Colt 1911. Texas Ranger Rudy Flores led the investigation of the shooting.
After reviewing the evidence, including body camera videos worn by the officers, and testimony in the investigation, the Grand Jury decided to take no action against the officers as they determined the use of deadly force was justified. Therefore, no criminal charges will be filed against Sergeant Gabriel Green and Officer Kaylynn Griffin.
Criminal District Attorney Allyson Mitchell stated, “The investigation of this case shows the importance of body cameras in determining the justification of an officer's use of force or use of deadly force.”
Police have said Bushey was suspected of stealing beer from a Palestine Walmart and hiding in the men's room of a nearby Applebee's Restaurant in the 2200 block of south Loop 256. He was taken into custody and during questioning, Bushey allegedly pointed a weapon at officers.
"Officers attempted to gain control of the subject, but he pulled away and again pointed the weapon at officers, at which time both officers drew their weapons and fired upon the suspect, striking him multiple times," Chief Mike Alexander said.
Alexander said an investigation determined Bushey had a BB gun designed to look like a 9 mm handgun.
Green and Griffin were placed on paid leave pending the investigation by the Texas Rangers and the district attorney's office.
