How did the whole free tibet thing become cool with hippies and white liberals ?
because some of these hippies consider themselves Buddhists, or at the very least, think Buddhism is really cool and deep and maybe they've seen the Dali Lama or Richard Gere or Lisa Simpson and think they are some guru of some sort. However, most of them have absolutely no idea how Buddhism is practiced in Tibet or other countries, where it's much fuckin different then how it is viewed in America (here we can say Buddhism is a way to reach inter peace, there are no gods, etc. but in reality where it is practiced it is full of superstitions, ignorance, oppression, hierarchy, etc.). I've seen it first hand since I have a lot of experience with Buddhist families who send entire paychecks to their homelands not to their families not to their friends not for schools but to the Monks, so they can build more temples and live above the peasants. Most Buddhists I know (that actually come directly from Buddhist countries like Cambodia for example) are the most superstitious people I've ever encountered.

I feel sorry for these people, honestly;

futile attempts to make somebody pay attention...

you can protests as much as you want, in a world where China has so much power as it has now, there isn't a force that can make them do anything
Hey, we could always nuke em and solve their overpopulation problem, but then where will all our cheap plastic disposable crap come from?

My step-father was a Thai buddhist, but i dont recall any of the stuff you mentioned. I went to a few Buddhist temples for "mass" as a kid, and it seemed cool at the time cus it was farily quiet and it wasnt in a fuckin steeple.

Exactly the same experience I've had (white liberals and south east asian Buddhists both). I have family living in Thailand and they are tripped out by the superstition, fear of ghosts, the hierarchy and shit.
Example: Nice big house near by that a widowed old lady died in. No one would buy it and no one would even look at it because it hadn't been "cleaned" by the monks. You've got to pay them a few GRAND to come and wave some incense and chant before the place is OK to live in again.

^^right, exactly my experiences (I think we may have talked about this, somewhere else likely) with a recent friend who committed suicide. Biggest joke/mockery of life when the monks came by and bullshitted around and got thousands of dollars from the grieving family/friends, talkin bout his ghost is trapped in the kitchen and this and that. seirously almost got sick to my stomach

I don't understand some of the people on here sometimes. I am not totally sure what principals they stand for or if they make judgment calls simply for the sake of being "cool". What is going on in Tibet, measures up to the ethnic genocide of Sudan. Millions of Tibetans have died and the Tibetan culture is slowly dying.

Boycotting the Olympics is the only avenue Tibetans or those who support Tibet have to voice their opinion. They cannot use the UN because the UN doesnt recognize Tibet as a country and other countries are quick not to antagonize China because of economic reasons.

What a bunch of hypocrits, they are all shouting "Free Tibet" from their own country but I don't see anyone actually do something about it. Go protest in Tibet, or get arms and fight for Tibet but I don't see anyone doing that, stop protesting in your own country for Tibet I don't think China is very impressed by these protest anyway..

No, what is going on in Tibet does not measure up to "ethnic genocide of Sudan" and Millions of Tibetans have not died.

As fucked up as China is, Tibet is a better place in many aspects then it was prior to China, for example workers in Tibet have the second highest wages in China, the life expectancy in Tibet in 1950 was 35 years, now it's 67, the GDP is thirty times that of before 1950, there is 22,500 km of highways, as opposed to none in 1950, now 25 scientific research institutes as opposed to none in 1950, infant mortality has dropped from 43% in 1950 to 0.661% in 2000. I mean, they can go back to the dark ages and be ruled by a oppressive religious hierarchy and worship 6 year olds if they want to. That's cool.

I dont know where you got your information from, but MILLIONS of Tibetans HAVE died under Chinese occupation. Yeah perhaps they are better off now under Chinese occupation, however compared to the rest of China education, literacy rates, and access to advanced health care is much lower then the rest of China. The Dali Lama recognizes this and wishes to JOIN China but have a autonomous government along side China. China doesn't want this, they are trying to get rid of the Tibetan race so they can have sole control of Tibet and allow the Han people take over.

Maybe the view is they are oppressive religious hierarchy that worship 6 year olds but compared to what? a military oppressive state that sends weapons to rebel groups to kill millions in Zimbabwe and Sudan?

Tibet was behind the times and the Dali Lama has recognized this and hopes he can work with China to advance their country and live in peace. However China want a free Tibet because of their pride. With the Olympics coming up they will have to swallow their pride and run the risk of China crumbling.

the population of Tibet is like 2 million people. My point is that comparing Tibet to Sudan is crazy talk, where in Sudan you've literally had hundreds of thousands of people killed in a short amount of time. Nothing like that is going on in Tibet.

At best, you can make a claim that at the very maximum one million people have died in Tibet since 1950 (although that number would be highly disputed because the majority of those deaths would have came in the early 50's during the "Great Leap Forward" which effected all of China, not just Tibet (something like 10-20 million died)).

Now in no way am I defending China either, but I am no fan of the Buddhists in Tibet or the fraudulent Dali Lama. The people of Tibet need something free of Chinese rule and free of Buddhist tyranny.

That'd be like the U.S. government giving California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas to Mecha and saying “Remember now; you’re still part of the U.S.”

What country/government in its right mind would cede autonomy without a fight? Western powers don't do this shit. Why should China?

Double standard.

Where is the outrage about the Spanish oppression of the Basque region? Turkish Kurdistan? Is there a call to boycott the Olympics over those issues? Nah, cuz those people get branded terrorists for what they do.

'Course they aren't sitting pretty living lavish like Tenzin Gyatso hob knobin' with Hollywood types makin major bank on the lecture circuit either.

Maybe if they had that kind of disposable income they could buy some publicity too. They'd still have the problem of fighting against a U.S. ally so the "I wanna be down" lefties in the U.S. wouldn't even know it was going on.

Good to see peeps on here that look past the Chinese but also past the Tibetan Propaganda. Most Western Media falls for the Tibetans, cause China is an " evil communist country with no human rights"...I live in China and I can say it is not like that. I also have access to all the different Media I want, and the real truth lies somewhere in between.

To Boycott the Olympics is the worst thing to do. This would just make the Chinese people support their government more. Right now the young Chinese people who are normally not too keen of their leaders are fully supporting them and organize themselves to stuff like not to buy in French Supermarket 'Carrefour' etc. ! You cannot force a country like China to do anything in this way. The country has improved alot over the last years and opens more and more, but you cannot expect them to change into 'Switzerland' over night.
