Gennady Golovkin's trainer warns Miguel Cotto & Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez
[IMG]

Miguel Cotto and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez have been warned that Gennady Golovkin will not chase them in pursuit of a fight.

The winner of the WBC middleweight title clash on November 28 between Cotto and Alvarez, which is being contested at a 155-pounds catchweight, would be in line to defend their belt against pound-for-pound colossus Golovkin next.

Alvarez has suggested Golovkin should also agree to a similar catchweight but the Kazakh's trainer has insisted that can't happen because he is aiming to add to his IBF and WBA belts at 160 pounds.

"'Canelo' hasn't got a leg to stand on if he's going to demand to fight at catchweight," said Abel Sanchez to On The Ropes Radio.

"If he can't fight at 160 pounds then he can vacate the belt and we can fight somebody else."

Golovkin has forged an intimidating 34-0 record with only three victims escaping a knockout, and most recently halted David Lemieux earlier this month.

The undefeated KO specialist has been challenged by Chris Eubank Jr but his trainer Sanchez has warned all comers that Golovkin's focus is on middleweight title belts, not specific opponents.

"Gennady is not after Cotto or Canelo," said Sanchez, whose California gym is home to Golovkin. "Gennady is after the middleweight belt and he wants all four of them, the major ones.

"Once he does that, then we'll look at other options, but Cotto or Canelo is not what's on his mind.

"The middleweight belt is what's on his mind, and whoever is across the ring is the next victim."

Charlo: 'If Floyd wants to hold title, then come fight me'
47m

Jermell Charlo’s motivation is simple: He’s just looking for an opportunity to compete for a world title.

It’s an endeavor that has eluded the unbeaten junior middleweight since making the leap from prospect to contender over the past two years.

Charlo (26-0, 11 KOs) believed he was there in December 2014, before then-titlist Demetrius Andrade pulled out of their bout -- despite a career-high payday -- in the 11th hour. Since then, it has been a political nightmare.

Jermell Charlo-Joachim Alcine
Where: Houston, Texas
When: Saturday, 9 p.m. ET
TV: NBC Sports Net

A native of Houston, Charlo returns to his hometown Saturday in a 10-round bout against veteran Joachim Alcine (35-7-2, 21 KOs) in the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions card (NBC Sports Net, 11 p.m. ET) at NRG Arena.

Charlo, 25, pulls no punches by saying the Alcine fight “was made to stay busy.” Despite scoring his biggest victory to date in March when he outpointed former title challenger Vanes Martirosyan, Charlo has very few inroads to a title shot based upon the way things stand for him both personally and politically.

His twin brother, Jermall Charlo, holds the IBF title after stopping Cornelius Bundrage in September. Their stablemate and sparring partner, Erislandy Lara, holds the secondary version of the WBA strap.

Outside of England’s Liam Smith, who won the vacant WBO belt from John Thompson two weeks ago, the remaining two belts at 154 pounds are currently in the hands of former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather.

Not only has it been two years since Mayweather last competed at junior middleweight, he retired following his victory over Andre Berto in September yet still hasn’t been stripped by the WBA and WBC.

For Charlo, that’s a problem.

“If Floyd Mayweather wants to continue holding that title, I’m a young gun and am coming to try and take it,” Charlo told ESPN.com. “If Floyd wants to hold it, then come fight me. I’m ranked No. 1 at 154 [by the WBC] so we can make a weight adjustment.

“He has yet to fight a young, black undefeated fighter and a hungry one at the same time. I felt Berto was young and black, but not hungry and obviously not within my caliber as a top contender.”

Like many in the sport, Charlo believes Mayweather will soon return to the ring and refers to his retirement as simply “a long vacation.” He also believes the sanctioning bodies will continue to bend their own rules in Mayweather’s favor.

“He’s doing it because he’s in and out of his mind saying that he wants to leave this game alone or he wants to stay and continue to make these $30 million [purses],” Charlo said. “But the problem is that he’s going to continue to run into young studs and I’m one of them.”

Charlo also intends to drop himself from the IBF rankings in order to not disrupt his brother’s reign. It’s a move he considers fair and the opposite of what Mayweather is currently doing.

“Floyd is controlling that division and we are not like Floyd,” Charlo said. “We are not just trying to hold spots.”

Charlo, who owns a wide decision win over Gabriel Rosado in 2014, isn’t deterred by being forced to wait. If anything, it’s par for the course throughout an eight-year pro career where nothing has come easy.

“I never had a walk in the park in my career,” Charlo said. “Nothing has been easy for me and I’ve been a dog trying to get it. I’m searching for my bones. I want to be a superstar in the junior middleweight division.”

Charlo believes his victory over Martirosyan showcased his movement, power and ability to dictate a fight. He was also pleased Martirosyan went back on his word about getting a tattoo of the Charlo brothers’ motto, Lions Only, if Charlo was victorious.

“[Martirosyan] was barking about that but I wouldn’t even want him to put my Lions Only tatted on him,” Charlo said. “He did have a lion on him and he thought he had a lion on the inside until he ran into a real lion and that’s what happened.”

For Charlo and his twin brother, Lions Only has grown to become more than just a catchy hashtag on social media.

“It’s a lifestyle. It’s our own brand and we’ve already trademarked it,” Charlo said. “We live and die by Lions Only because not too many people can go through the struggle of life the way my brother and I have and still be on top and make it as far as we are making it right now.”

While Charlo waits patiently for his shot, his focus Saturday will be squarely on Alcine, 39, who is 2-0-1 since snapping a five-fight losing skid in 2014.

“I can’t continue to focus on why I haven’t had yet won a world title, I need to focus on being a better fighter,” Charlo said. “I feel [Alcine] is going to try to dictate and take advantage that I’m young. But he fails to realize that I’m all that, as well.

“He’s going to come trying to bully me and be rough but I’m going to make it rough for him. I’m going to win this fight by knockout.”

Antoine Douglas: I want Danny Jacobs or Peter Quillin

ANTOINE DOUGLAS:

“I know my opponent is a tall southpaw. He likes to fight on the inside and smother his opponents with his punches. It’s a good matchup. I can adjust to any boxer face.

“I’m satisfied with the way that my career has progressed, taking steps up with each opponent along the way. We’re ready to take that next step, more toward a title shot.

“If all goes well with my fight against Les Sherrington I hope to start fighting on Saturday, make that move from ShoBox to SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

“I see myself fighting for a world title in the near future. There are plenty names in the division that I look at, but only a few guys that hold the titles. I look at Daniel Jacobs and Peter Quillin as guys that I would like to fight.

“The Jacobs vs. Quillin fight could go either way. I think I’m leaning more towards Quillin.

“I was born prematurely. Doctors told my family that I wouldn’t be able to walk or see, but look at me now. My mom is always screaming at my fights because she’s so proud of the fact that I’ve overcome so much.

“I grew up with my siblings bouncing around at different foster homes from the age of 5. I was running the streets because I didn’t know any better.

“My cousin adopted us and he first introduced us to boxing.

“Boxing provided me with a family, structure and disciple. It has made me the person I am today and has brought me success so I can live a better life in the future.

“My upbringing in the streets prepared me for my career in the ring. I have already been through the battle and if something was to stop me it would’ve already happened.

“My mom battled addiction when I was younger and she wasn’t in my life. She’s now back in my life and it means a lot to me to have her supporting me with my career. I am also able to provide structure in her life.

“It would mean everything to me to have my mom and I celebrate a world title.”

Joshua Clottey-Gabe Rosado in talks for Dec. 12 tripleheader on HBO Latino

Joshua Clottey could finally be making his return to HBO — sort of.

The former welterweight beltholder — best known for a lethargic loss to Manny Pacquiao — is in talks to face Gabe Rosado on Dec. 12 in the main event of a HBO Latino tripleheader, Clottey’s promoter, Joe DeGuardia, told USA TODAY Sports. The weight is still being discussed, but would be above Clottey’s natural weight of 154 pounds. Tuscon, Ariz., is the site.

Clottey, 38, topped Jorge Silva via unanimous decision in May, a victory that followed a six-knockdown pummeling of Anthony Mundine last year. The Ghanian’s last high-profile fight was the 2010 loss to Pacquiao, but he’s shined in other TV fights. Clottey (39-4, 22 KOs) beat Zab Judah for a vacant title in 2008, dropped a razor-thin split decision to Miguel Cotto in 2009 and also put on a good fight in a loss to Antonio Margarito in 2006.

He’s far removed from those performances, but with his style, defense and technical skills, could make for an intriguing player in the 154-pound division.

Rosado (21-9, 13 KOs) has now lost four of his last five fights (one no contest), with three of those defeats coming by knockout. The rugged Philadelphian is one of the most exciting fighters in the sport, but would have a tough assignment against Clottey, who possesses a high guard.

Rosado was in talks to face James Kirkland on HBO in December, but Kirkland wasn’t happy with the money and the fight fell by the wayside. This is a nice consolation prize for the 29-year-old.

Yunieski Gonzalez, who is coming off a controversial decision loss to Jean Pascal in July, will face undefeated Ukrainian Vyacheslav Shabranskyy in another televised bout, DeGuardia said. Gonzalez (16-1, 12 KOs) came forward and threw big shots against Pascal in one of the best TV fights of the year. The Cuban suffered his first defeat, but greatly increased his stock with the performance.

Shabranskyy (14-0, 12 KOs) packs a big punch but hit the deck twice in his last outing before putting away Paul Parker in the third round. He will be taking a quantum leap in class vs. Gonzalez.

The third TV bout is expected to be an IBF light heavyweight eliminator between Sullivan Barrera and Igor Mikhalkin. The winner will be the mandatory challenger to Sergey Kovalev.

So Rigondeaux might sue the @WorldBoxingOrg for stripping him of the title for clear rules violation? Yeah. OK. Good luck with that.

Roy Jones Jr’s fight against Maccarinelli will be his last

jones334By Scott Gilfoid: Well, it looks like 46-year-old Roy Jones Jr. (62-8, 45 KOs) will be retiring after his December 12th fight against former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli (40-7, 32 KOs.

According to Fight News, Jones Jr. says he’ll be retiring after his December 12th fight against the 35-year-old Maccarinelli in Russia. On Wednesday, it was initially said that the WBA “Super” cruiserweight title would be on the line, but apparently that’s not going to be the case for now.

It’s just going to be a regular fight with perhaps one of the lesser known titles up for grabs.

“The fight on December 12th will be the last in my career,” Jones Jr. said via fightnews.com. “Today, I woke up the first time as a Russian/American. I have a great opponent. I’m waiting for December 12 and I appreciate the support of the fans.”

Jones Jr. became a Russian citizen earlier this week on Monday, and he’s pretty excited about it. Jones Jr. can now live in both countries and travel among them freely without having to get visas and deal with the red tape involved with that. Jones Jr. is both a trainer and a promoter, and it makes sense for him to be able to travel to Russia to do his business there.

What is hard to understand is why in the world did Jones Jr pick Maccarinelli to fight instead of a top 15 ranked contender? If Jones Jr was really serious about wanting to fight for the vacant WBA “super” cruiserweight title, then why in the heck didn’t he make it easy on the World Boxing Association by selecting at least a top 5 guy like 1. Beibut Shumenov, 2. Yunier Dorticos, 3. Lateef Kayode, 4. Dmitry Kudryashov or 5. Mirko Larghetti.

I think the first four of those fighters would all beat Jones, but he’d definitely have a chance of beating Larghetti. I wouldn’t say it would be a good chance though, because Jones Jr looks totally shot in my estimation. But if he’d selected one of those fighters, I think the WBA would have given the green light to a fight between him and them for the WBA “super” cruiserweight title despite the fact that Jones Jr isn’t ranked at all by the WBA in their top 15 and is only ranked #11 by the WBO at this time.

The WBA would have taken major heat if they agreed to let Jones and the 2nd tier fighter Maccarinelli fight for their “super” cruiserweight title, because it would take the ‘super’ out of the title due to Maccarinelli and Jones Jr being seen by a lot of boxing fans as guys at the last chance saloon.

It aint about the money. This dude just doesnt want to fight Porter cause its to big of a risk. I tell ya man this shit is funny. People always talk about how Floyd wouldnt fight this guy or pick that guy and it goes on with pretty much everyone in boxing at some point or another. Canelo scared to fight GGG, Thurman doesnt want to fight a quality opponent who might actually beat him but claims he wants more money lol. He never claimed about money before but once Porter's name is mentioned now he has to get paid lol. Cop out. Of course everyone will fight Floyd cause its a huge payday win or lose and win you lose to Floyd its not a big deal because you are expected to lose lol. Classic. Got Em!!
