I'm surprised Alfonso Gomez is still around btw. He's had one of the better career's from a Contender alumni standpoint but still not good.

Gary Russell Jr targets fight with Jhonny Gonzalez, then Abner Mares

Gary Russell Jr says he's looking to secure his first world title shot, as he wants to take on Jhonny Gonzalez for the WBC featherweight title, then face Abner Mares.
Featherweight prospect Gary Russell Jr sounds ready to stop fighting overmatched patsies and take on a tougher challenge, telling RingTV.com that he's trying to push for a fight with newly-crowned WBC featherweight titlist Jhonny Gonzalez for his next fight, after which he'd like to face press rival Abner Mares.
"We were planning on fighting Abner after this fight. So what's going on now is that we're putting in a bid to fight Jhonny Gonzalez. We're really trying to get Gonzalez, now, and, hopefully, we get the fight with Gonzalez. You know, Al Haymon has a good partnership with Golden Boy, so it's pretty easy to get things done. My next fight was going to be against Abner, maybe at the end of November, maybe December. Somewhere around there. I would have rather fought Abner Mares, because he's got such a great fan base and more of a following and all of that, so of course I would have rather gotten Abner than Jhonny. But it's all good. Once I beat Jhonny and take his belt, then we could do a fight with Abner."
Russell (23-0, 13 KO) has been rather heavily and legitimately criticized for facing overmatched opposition rather than trying to work his way up the ladder, as he's stayed pretty much stuck on the same level for a while now, even taking a pretty significant step back against Juan Ruiz in his August 9 fight in Indio, California, a matchup so lousy it didn't even make a ShoBox broadcast. Few doubt the talent of the 25-year-old Russell, but boxing proves all the time, year in and year out, that there's more to this sport than just ability. Russell has not had his mettle tested in the pro ranks.
Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer recently made comments about Russell fighting for a world title by the end of 2013, too, so it doesn't seem like he's just blowing smoke or anything. At the time, Schaefer would not make any specific statements, but at the time, Mares seemed the only option. With Abner dropping his belt, Gonzalez (55-8, 47 KO) is certainly the most realistic option for Russell, and I think it's a really interesting fight.
Would Gonzalez be able to stun another unbeaten, hyped fighter, or would Russell prove out against by far his toughest foe?

A Brooklyn superfight between natives Zab Judah and Paulie Malignaggi is being seriously discussed for Dec. 7 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., according to a source involved in the process.
If the fight is made, it would land as the co-feature to the proposed Amir Khan-Devon Alexander bout.
Judah (42-8, 29 KOs) and Malignaggi represent the two biggest names in boxing from Brooklyn and the fight would be hotly anticipated in the New York borough. Judah is a former undisputed welterweight champion, but has been campaigning at 140 pounds and would move back up for the fight. Malignaggi fought most of his career at junior welterweight and isn't a big welterweight.
If the fight is made, it would land as the co-feature to the proposed Amir Khan-Devon Alexander bout.

Schaefer: Robert Guerrero Turned Down Keith Thurman

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has advised BoxingScene.com that Robert Guerrero (31-2, 18KOs) has turned down a proposed fight with undefeated WBA interim-welterweight champion Keith Thurman (21-0, 19KOs). Trainer Mike Stafford believes that Adrien Broner hasn't gotten enough credit for his win over Paulie Malignaggi, and that too much is expected of the young star.

Adrien Broner has become a rising star in large part due to his excellent (relatively) use of social media platforms, his ability to constantly stay in the boxing discussion, hard-sell pushes from HBO and now Showtime, and because he's talked himself up, too, as the next big thing in the boxing game, the future Floyd Mayweather.
But trainer Mike Stafford feels as though Broner's debated and very competitive win over Paulie Malignaggi on June 22 hasn't gotten enough respect, as fans and media expect too much of Broner. From Chris Robinson at Hustleboss.com:
"They're always going to be harsh. He's 23 and he's fighting a 33-year old veteran and they don't give him no credit. That's crazy. The kid aint nothing but 23 and doing a spectacular thing. They expect too much out of him. And they feel that he doesn't hold up to what they think he's supposed to do and they're saying he's not the one. And that's not fair. The bottom line, whether you knock a person out or win a split-decision, you want to win. And that's the main thing."
Stafford is conveniently ignoring that Broner has put these expectations on himself, and that even if Golden Boy, HBO, and SHO had not pumped him up as a future superstar, expectations would probably still be sky-high. Broner (27-0, 22 KO) talks up his performances well ahead of time, and very loudly so. He demands the attention and the expectations. I think it's a little weak to then turn that around and say it's everyone else's fault that Broner slipping past Malignaggi is seen as something of a disappointment -- ol' About Billions said he'd knock Malignaggi out. Not only did he not do that, he didn't come close, and there were people who thought Paulie outworked him.
Look, Broner's win over Malignaggi was a good, solid win in his debut at 147, and one thing I will say is that I think because of the way everyone has been chasing easy or bogus titles in so many weight classes in recent years, we do ask too much on that front. Broner's 23 and has already won paper belts in three weight classes. It's certainly an achievement, even if titles are easier than ever to come by if you're properly connected, which Broner is and then some.
Stafford also responded to Floyd Mayweather Sr's recent criticisms of Broner imitating his son:
"I don't think Floyd should be trying to answer questions for his son. I think his son is in control of his own destiny. He's 44 and 0; he don't need nobody telling him who he should fight. It's up to the kids. I'm not going to get into no talking matches with Floyd Sr. I respect him. He don't know nothing about Adrien and I don't think he know the relationship of Floyd and Adrien. I think that he should leave that situation alone and let them handle that. We've got a great relationship with Al Haymon and Floyd's got a good relationship with Al Haymon. I think Floyd Sr. is talking for Floyd Sr., I don't think he's talking for his son."
On this, he is mostly likely simply correct.

Malignaggi says he wants to fight the 35-year-old Judah, but it has to be worth his while to take the fight. In other words, Malignaggi would to see the green before he’ll say yes to that fight.
Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer was the one that floated the idea of putting together Judah-Malignaggi fight as the co-feature for the Khan vs. Alexander fight, and it didn’t take Malignaggi long to say he wants to do it.
Malignaggi said to RingTV “Yeah, that [Malignaggi-Judah] can happen, but only if the situation is right, you know? Am I interested in the Zab Judah fight? Of course I’m interested in the Zab Judah fight…on a business level, of course, man, me against Zab Judah in Brooklyn, who wouldn’t be interested in that fight?”
This fight could be more interesting than the main even between Khan and Alexander, because that fight could turn out to be a technical battle. Judah would be looking to slug with Malignaggi knowing that Adrien Broner, Amir Khan and Ricky Hatton were able to beat him by unloading on him with big shots.
Malignaggi gave Broner a lot of problems in losing by a 12 round split decision last June, but the fight might have been a one-sided affair had Broner thrown more punches. Malignaggi was there to be dominated, but Broner didn’t let his hands go with enough punches.
Judah has the power to beat Malignaggi, but he’s also a pot shot fighter like Broner with a lot work rate. If Judah can up the pace of the fight he could end up taking Malignaggi out the way that Khan and Hatton did. Malignaggi had problems with Khan’s hand speed, and Judah is almost as fast.

Jhonny Gonzalez Won't Face Gary Russell For Short Money

Newly crowned WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez appeared on Tuesday's edition of BoxingScene Radio to talk about his plans for the immediate future.
Gonzalez shocked the boxing world on Saturday night with his first round knockout of the previously undefeated Abner Mares. With the win Gonzalez has a lot of different opportunities for lucrative fights.
Shortly after Gonzalez's victory, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer revealed that his company holds promotional options on Gonzalez's next three fights. He also said that if Mares opts not to take an immediate rematch with Gonzalez, he would like to see Gary Russell Jr face Gonzalez in November or December.
Gonzalez told us that he is willing to face Russell but only if the money is right. He said that he wasn't thrilled with purse he received to face Mares.
"I will fight anyone. Whoever my promoter puts in front of me I fight and its always been that way in my career.
"If Golden Boy wants me to fight Gary Russell Jr I have no problem with that but they need to come to an agreement with my promoter. Golden Boy paid me a very small purse for this fight and they will have to give me a good offer to face him," Gonzalez told BoxingScene Radio.

Bradley On Sparring With Matthysse

Junior welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32KOs) gave WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley (30-0, 12KOs) some good work when the two of them sparred on Monday. Matthysse is going to face WBA/WBC champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16KOs) on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, while Bradley will defend his title against Mexican superstar Juan Manuel Marquez (55-6-1, 40KOs) on October 12th at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Bradley told The Desert Sun paper that many members of his team were concerned that sparring with Matthysse at this stage of the training camp.
“They were like ‘Whoa, why would you bring in a big puncher at this time?’ But I understand boxing is a big mind game and I think I overcame any fear I had that I wouldn’t be ready for the Marquez fight. I took some hard shots today and it was nothing. I didn’t get rocked, didn’t get dazed. I was fine. It was like I told you guys I was good. I told you guys, I’m not crazy. We’ll, I’m a little crazy, but I got my wits about me," Bradley said.
After nearly getting knocked out by Ruslan Provodnikov earlier this year, Bradley says he gained some added confidence after being able to hang in there with such a hard puncher like Matthysse.
“He has all that punching power in both hands, especially the left hook,” Bradley said. “Marquez loves to throw that left hook a lot. I know that’s the punch they’ll be looking to throw for this fight. Matthysse definitely made me aware of it early in the sparring session. He does things that Marquez likes to do and he’s making me aware of it right now. Sparring this guy will help me psychologically for what’s ahead. It was a really good look, it boosted my confidence and it was good to see this guy.”

"All you gotta do is look at some of the opponents that he's faced in the past. I don't really know too many opponents that he's faced in the past, but a lot of guys went the distance with him, and we not talking about the guys that's on the A list or B list. We talking about D fighters and C fighters," stated undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd "Money" Mayweather, who seemed less than impressed when asked for his thoughts regarding comments made by Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya and undefeated jr. middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez about scoring a knockout. As far as Mayweather is concerned, the idea of being knocked out by Canelo seems odd considering that fighters with far lesser credentials than him were able to go the distance with the younger champion.
"They were able to go to the 8th round and 9th round; he was getting hit with numerous shots, so, you know, as far as with me, you know, I use certain angles. I got a lot of experience in big fights, so it's going to be a little bit different for him when it's at this level," Mayweather explained before driving home his point with more specific example. "You look at some of the fighters that he faced before the Trout fight. He didn't knock Trout out, and you got some other guys that he should have knocked out within 4 rounds that he let take him 8 rounds and take him 9 rounds. I think Ricky Hatton's brother, if I'm not mistaken, took him the distance," he added. "I don't think Ricky Hatton's brother is on the same level as a Floyd Mayweather. You gotta compare the two."

"All you gotta do is look at some of the opponents that he's faced in the past. I don't really know too many opponents that he's faced in the past, but a lot of guys went the distance with him, and we not talking about the guys that's on the A list or B list. We talking about D fighters and C fighters," stated undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd "Money" Mayweather, who seemed less than impressed when asked for his thoughts regarding comments made by Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya and undefeated jr. middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez about scoring a knockout. As far as Mayweather is concerned, the idea of being knocked out by Canelo seems odd considering that fighters with far lesser credentials than him were able to go the distance with the younger champion.
"They were able to go to the 8th round and 9th round; he was getting hit with numerous shots, so, you know, as far as with me, you know, I use certain angles. I got a lot of experience in big fights, so it's going to be a little bit different for him when it's at this level," Mayweather explained before driving home his point with more specific example. "You look at some of the fighters that he faced before the Trout fight. He didn't knock Trout out, and you got some other guys that he should have knocked out within 4 rounds that he let take him 8 rounds and take him 9 rounds. I think Ricky Hatton's brother, if I'm not mistaken, took him the distance," he added. "I don't think Ricky Hatton's brother is on the same level as a Floyd Mayweather. You gotta compare the two."

Also trashing marquez basically calling him a cheat, says he couldn't hurt manny at 126 but magically gets KO power at 147/age 39...really going in hard.
