Maidana to Broner: November 9th won’t be very fun

Broner Maidana Broner vs. Maidana marcos rene maidana adrien broner By Allan Fox: Marcos Maidana (34-3, 31 KO’s) and WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner (27-0, 22 KO’s) went at it today on twitter with Maidana sending a message that Broner will be history on November 9th, which is when the two fighters will likely be facing each other on Showtime pay per view. Broner fired back with comments about Maidana’s England, or lack thereof.

Here’s the conversation between the two of them:

Maidana said on his twitter “ A @adri enbroner, [your] rap tour is about to end. Last show will be November 9 in Las Vegas. That night won’t be fun for him though.”

Broner said “ C @CHINO Maidana haaa you can’t even talk English haaaa but you tweeting English lol.”

Maidana: “ A @adri enBroner I have to get translators & it seems that you need English teachers they tell me. we’ll do the talk in the ring, no worries.”

Maidana probably chose to initiate this battle due to the trash talking Broner did last Friday night in an interview on Showtime where Broner said “I’m going to f*** Maidana up first, then I’m going to go get [Lucas] Matthysse…If Maidana wants to fight me, I’ll f*** him up!”

It’s not even about Maidana wanting to fight Broner; it’s about the fact Maidana is ranked #2 WBA, so it makes sense that he’d be wanting to get a title shot against Broner with a rank that high.

It’s Broner’s job to now defend his WBA title now that he’s won it off of Paulie Malignaggi by virtue of his close 12 round split decision win over him last June in New York.

Part of the interest that Maidana has in fighting Broner obviously is because of how flawed and vulnerable Broner looked in the Paulie Malignaggi fight last June. Malignaggi lost that fight, but he totally exposed a lot of Broner’s weaknesses front and center for people to see.

Broner’s power isn’t that spectacular at 147 compared to at 135, he doesn’t throw a lot of punches, he doesn’t move very much from the waist down, and he can be outworked by an aggressive fighter that throws a lot of punches like Maidana typically does.

Roach sees Mayweather Jr. having easy time beating Canelo on September 14th

Mayweather Canelo Mayweather vs. Canelo saul alvarez freddie roach floyd mayweather jr (Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Unlike a lot of people who see Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) as having to struggle to beat WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) in their fight on September 14th, trainer Freddie Roach sees this as an easy fight for Mayweather. Roach thinks Mayweather’s difficult to beat when he’s choosing to box his opposition rather giving them chances by choosing to mix it up.

Roach said in an interview with ewsnewsreporting.com “I think Mayweather wins easily. When he wants to box and he doesn’t take any chances, he’s very good at it. I think he’s going to win this fight easily.”

Roach does appear to have a good point. Canelo fights in a flat-footed manner, and he likes to load up with everything he throws at his opposition. Mayweather Jr. does very well against those types of opponents, because he’s able to hit with fast counter shots when they try to hit him with power punches. But with Canelo it’s even easier for Mayweather, mainly because Canelo doesn’t have the stamina to fight hard for long durations.

Canelo can’t even fight hard for short durations without needing a rest break after every brief flurry he throws. You can tell Canelo needs the rest breaks, as his face turns red, and he backs off and stops punching.

Canelo reminds me a lot of a bigger version of Juan Manuel Marquez, but without the ability to fight hard like him, and without the same counter punching ability. Canelo can counter puncher, but he’s slower than Marquez, and he’s obviously blessed with the same reflexes.

It’s pretty clear what Canelo is try to do against Mayweather. Canelo is going to try and cut off the, corner Mayweather, and trap him into exchanges. That’s about all Canelo can to do in this fight, because he’s not going to beat Mayweather Jr. with his speed. That’s not going to happen.

It’ll be suicide if Canelo fights like he did against Austin Trout last April in Texas, because this fight won’t be Texas, and he’s not going to get rounds handed to him based on landing 2 or 3 punches per round.

Keith Thurman likes the idea of fighting Robert Guerrero on November 2nd

Guerrero Thurman Guerrero vs. Thurman robert guerrero keith thurman By Allan Fox: Interim WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman (21-0, 19 KO’s) is on board with fighting former two division world champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) next in a fight that could take place on November 2nd. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer wants to make the Guerrero-Thurman fight, and he’s hoping to get it put together for November 2nd if he can get the two fighters to agree on the contract.

Thurman said to RingTV “It’s an exciting fight for me, because Guerrero, he’s been in the mix within the welterweight division, which is pretty much where I want to be…I think it’s a great test, and a great opportunity to see what Keith Thurman is all about.”

Thurman, #1 WBA, #1 WBO, needs a win over a fighter with a name like Guerrero to get the attention of boxing fans, as well to put himself in the position to exert pressure on WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner for a fight. A lot of boxing fans think that Broner will never face Thurman.

Instead, they think Broner will fight Marcos Maidana followed by Lucas Matthysse, and then will vacate the WBA title rather than face the bigger Thurman. It’s not that Thurman is a bigger puncher than the likes of Maidana and Matthysse. What makes Thurman so difficult to fight is his size and boxing ability. He’s like a junior middleweight fighting at welterweight.

Guerrero, #7 WBA, #7 WBC, lost his last fight to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last May, and he needs to put together some big wins in order to get back in position for a title shot against one of the champions. Guerrero says he’d like to fight Mayweather again, but it’s a long shot that he’ll ever get another fight with him.

Guerrero can still get a title shot against some of the champions if he beats Thurman. A win over him will put Guerrero in the position to face Broner, and that’s a fight that Guerrero has wanted for the past year.

Deontay Wilder doubts the Klitschko brothers will want to fight him now

wladimir klitschko vitali klitschko deontay wilder By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (29-0, 29 KO’s) put the heavyweight division on notice that he’s a force to be reckoned with after his impressive 1st round knockout win over Sergei Liakhovoch last Saturday night in Indio, California.

That was Deontay’s 29th straight knockout, and his goal is to knockout his first 30 opponents. After that, all Deontay wants is to capture a world title.

Getting an opportunity to fight for a world title may prove to be difficult for Deontay, because the Klitschko brothers aren’t likely to hand-pick Deontay for a fight when there are so many marks for them to fight.

Deontay doubts either of the Klitschko brothers will want to fight him, because he’s sparred with both Wladimir Klitschko and Vitali Klitschko in the past, and they know how good he is from those sparring sessions.

Deontay said to the Tuscaloosanews.com about the Klitschko brothers “I gave such tremendous work to them [in working as sparring partner]. The reply I got from sparring them, I got the feeling maybe they’re hold off on fighting me, because they know what I’m capable of doing.”

Well, I think the answer to whether the Klitschkos would volunteer to fight Deontay can be answered by looking at who the Klitschkos have been fighting recently: Dereck Chisora, Manuel Charr, Mariusz Wach, Francesco Pianeta, Jean Marc Mormeck, and Alberto Sosnowski.

Looking at that crew, what does that tell you about whether the Klitschkos would volunteer to fight a talented heavyweight like Deontay. It’s just not going to happen.

If Deontay wants to fight one of the Klitschkos, he’s going to have to become the mandatory challenger for one of them, and then hope that the sanctioning bodies will be firm with the Klitschkos if they ask to slip in extra optional title defenses by saying no and insisting that they fight Deontay.

Deontay probably will have 3 to 5 more fights before he’s locked in as the mandatory for Wladimir. I think Vitali will retire within the year, so it’s not even worth it for Deontay to try and get a fight against him.

If Deontay can beat the winner of the Chris Arreola vs. Seth Mitchell fight, and then beat four more top contenders, I see him in position to finally get a title shot.

Unfortunately, I think it’s going to take at least 2 more years before Deonty is ranked high enough for him to become the mandatory to face Wladimir, and that’s without Wladimir asking the sanctioning bodies permission to have optional title bouts.

If Wladimir requests 1 or 2 optional defenses beyond his normal optional title defenses, it could be another three years before Deontay gets a shot against Wladimir. By then, Deontay will be 30, and Wladimir will be 40-years-old. It won’t be good for Wladimir to be facing a puncher like Deontay at that age.

It is kind of sad that it will probably take another 3 years for Deontay to get a title shot, because he is ranked #6 by the World Boxing Association. However, Wladimir fights about 2 times a year, and there are 5 guys in front of Deontay in the WBA rankings and #5 guys in front of him in the WBO rankings.

If you look all those guys that Wladimir can pick before Deontay, and then factor in possible optional title defenses Wladimir might ask for where he faced guys ranked near the bottom of the heavyweight division, we’re 3 years easy before Deontay gets a title shot against Wladimir.

Odlanier Solis’ promoter interested in Deontay Wilder fight
August 11th, 2013 | Post Comment - 60 Comments

odlanier solis deontay wilder By Ivan Ivanov: Getting the fans interested in the heavyweight division requires imagination and even writing about it isn’t exactly a rewarding task. There are no natural self-evident rivalries and publicity stunts may be necessary to set up a fight. According to Fightnews, Ahmet Öner, the promoter of heavyweight contender Odlanier Solis, has issued a challenge to Deontay Wilder. He made a bold statement that he doesn’t see Wilder as the next big thing and Solis could prove that.

The manager is confident “Showtime” will accept the fight. He has billed this rivalry as “US Power vs. Latino Power”. This could be an overstatement but the fight makes sense anyway.

Odlanier Solis has disguised his boxing body behind layers of fat. Years of obesity and questionable work ethics have pushed him into a semi-obscure spot and his German-Turkish manager has not been able to showcase his charge in the USA.

I’ve mentioned before that I see Solis as the most gifted boxer in the weight class and if he loses 30 pounds and gets in real boxing shape, he’ll be a monster. The Cuban boxing style is easily adaptable to the paid ranks but it requires you to be in a very good physical condition. The Cubans have been known to train with wet shirts for added resistance, but wearing a back pack weighing 25-35 pounds in the ring like Solis does has not occurred even to the most cruel of coaches.

Odlanier does exactly that to himself when he should drop the “excess luggage” and work harder, there would be health benefits as well. As far as boxing knowledge and ability is concerned, he is a boxing encyclopedia but it’s only in Spanish with a Cuban accent, he has not found it necessary to learn English.

Deontay Wilder is a little taller than the Klitschkos but his main physical advantage is his reach. He has perhaps the longest reach in boxing today at 84 in/213 cm. He is remarkably fats for such a tall athlete and has good overall coordination. He has fast hands and fast feet as well. He is dangerous because of his speed; his power is based on that. His height, reach and fast feet keep him out of trouble but his defense is limited to that.

Deontay started boxing relatively late and late starters in boxing lack the ingrained boxing motor skills formed during the teenage years. Their main common setback is they lack solid defensive discipline. I’ll be curious to see him against an opponent who can dodge his predictable offense and counter with a shot or two. Solis is like that and he can be a good test. To keep this from getting too long, here is my view: If Odlanier Solis show up in shape for this fight, he could give Wilder more than he could handle.

RICHARD SCHAEFER DISCUSSES NOVEMBER 9 "BOXING EXTRAVAGANZA" PPV; PLANNING A "DREAM CARD" OF ALL-ACTION FIGHTS
By Ben Thompson | August 12, 2013

"I'm having conversations with Al Haymon about November 2nd and November 9th. November 9th, we want to do a pay-per-view from the MGM Grand. I want to do a big event there, a big card, and put some of those exciting fights on November 9th, and use November 2nd and October 26th, those two weekends before November 9th as a lead-in for that pay-per-view," stated Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who spoke to FightHype.com about his plans to stage a "boxing extravaganza" pay-per-view event on November 9. According to Schaefer, the "dream card" will feature all-action fights that boxing fans will not disappointed with.

"I'm trying to really put a boxing extravaganza together for November the 9th, and if we are going to be able to pull off what I'm working on, I think fight fans and sports fans are going to be extremely pleased," Schaefer continued. Many industry insiders are speculating that WBA welterweight champion Adrien Broner will headline that event, likely defending his title against former jr. welterweight champion Marcos Maidana. Though Schaefer did not confirm nor deny the possibility of Broner being on the card, he did say that several other names familiar names will be matched in competitive 50/50 fights that will entertain fans even more than their recent "Knockout Kings II" card.

"I think the fact is if you want to be on pay-per-view, you need to have the right dance partner, so if we can get a fight done with the right dance partner, I do believe Adrien Broner could certanly be on that November 9th pay-per-view. But there are other names which could very well be on that pay-per-view as well, so that's what I'm working on," Schaefer explained. "I don't want to really let the cat out of the bag. I want to sort of like get my stuff done; put together a dream card of fights which are 50/50 fights which are as entertaining as the card we've seen a couple of weeks ago from San Antonio. People said that was one of the best cards boxing has ever seen. I'm going try to top it. I'm going to try to top it for November the 9th and make this truly an all-action card."

It better be the most stacked card in the past 10 years cus it's way too soon for Broner to headline a PPV.

Most of the big named guys from Golden Boy already have fights though so I struggle to imagine who they can put on the card. The one obvious choice would be Keith Thurman vs Guerrero. Great fight but still not enough to justify $50.

Canelo, Floyd, Bernard Hopkins, Matthysse, Garcia, Khan, Mares, Arreola/Mitchell, Quillin, all have upcoming fights or will be unavailable.

So that leaves guys like Omar Figueroa, Leo Santa Cruz, and as mentioned Thurman and Guerrero possibly.

I mentioned this earlier but I'm betting Showtime is just about at their yearly budget. They've put on some great cards and paid a lot of money. By putting this fight on PPV they won't have to pay anything out of their budget. Even if the PPV only does 150,000 buys they will make more than enough money to pay for the fighters purses.

Lara vs Trout, Thurman vs Guerrero, and Maidana vs Broner. If I do order it it's to see Trout and Guerrero comeback and the promos to those would be great. When is Ortiz fighting? he could sell a ppv and maybe fight Broner after Broner looses to Maidana

I think Santa Cruz could turn around and make it in time for that card. He rarely takes that much damage. Who else could really be on that card? I doubt Mares will be available by then. I keep thinking "50/50" matchups so it's probably dudes like Soto Karass that put up a good fight but aren't necessarily great fighters by any means. My guess is something like Malignaggi/Soto Karass will happen.

They could also have guys like Angulo, Bundrage, Peterson and Judah (maybe against each other) in a crossroads fight and decent matchup, or someone like Ponce De Leon who they love to put on cards like that. I also wouldn't rule out a Rosado/Love rematch.
