Mayweather Jr, Calazghe, and Taylor in the WBC's Latest

By Mark Vester

The WBC's latest rating have come out for the month of July, and some very interesting bumps, positions and mandatory spots were filled.

In the light heavyweight ranks, Joe Calzaghe, based on his April win over Bernard Hopkins, was given the number-one ranking position to champion Chad Dawson. Calzaghe is going to face Roy Jones Jr. in a potential fall retirement bout.

No surprise to anyone reading that Jermain Taylor has been bumped to the number-two spot behind Carl Froch in the super middleweight ranks. The sanctioning body has ordered the two of them to fight for the title Calzaghe vacated after his jump to 175-pounds.

Marco Antonio Rubio is holding court at number-one in the middleweight ranks and is still being mentionted as a possible fall opponent for champ Kelly Pavlik. Oscar De La Hoya, for reasons unknown is the mandatory challenger to new junior middleweight champion Sergio Mora.

Another, for reasons unknown, as Floyd Mayweather Jr, who retired and was the reigning welterweight champion, is still listed as the WBC's champion Emeritus at 154-pounds.

Luis Collazo is at the number-one spot to new welterweight champion Andre Berto. Devon Alexander is at number-one to new junior welterweight champ Timothy Bradley.

Jose Armando Santa Cruz at the top spot to new lightweight champ Manny Pacquiao. Rafael Marquez in the top spot to super bantamweight champ Israel Marquez, even the WBC wants a fourth fight. And rounding it off is Jorge Arce grabbing the number-one position to super flyweight champ Cristian Mijares

"[I'll return] in October or November. It all depends on the best proposal. There are a lot of people interested in fighting me. The WBC will give us a chance to do a voluntary bout. Maybe, my opponent would be Jorge Arce, or someone like Oscar Larios or Rafael Marquez. Whatever Frank and my promoters Golden Boy and Sycuan tell me. They are all good opponents. Arce is an icon in Mexico and wants the fight, but there is nothing set, as Frank would say, where we can say 'this is our opponent.'"
They should have Vasquez and Larios teamed up vs. Larios and Marquez in a ladder match.

Winky Wright: "Miguel Cotto Will Beat Antonio Margarito"

By Mark Vester

WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto received a surprise visitor at his training camp in Puerto Rico when former undisputed junior middleweight champ Winky Wright came strolling through the door. Wright was in Puerto Rico on business, meeting with buddy Felix "Tito" Trinidad to discuss the possibility of Winky Promotions putting on some events on the island.

"Puerto Rico is a great country of boxers. We have some boxers that who Puerto Ricans, so we would like at some point to bring a show to Puerto Rico and I like fighting here because I was always given a lot of respect and I know that Puerto Rico has an audience that values good boxing," Wright told Primera Hora.

Cotto is preparing hard for his July 26 title defense against Antonio Margarito on HBO pay-per-view from Las Vegas. Wright predicts that Cotto should walk away with the win.

"I believe that it's going to be a great fight. I like Cotto, he is a very complete boxer. Margarito is a great puncher with size, but Cotto can do a lot of things. He can box a lot more and also hits hard, so I expect to see Cotto leave with the victory," Wright said. "Cotto is one the best fighters out there. He is undefeated, has gotten some big wins and has great ability. It's difficult to say who is the best boxer in the world, pound-for-pound, but finally he is one of them. Cotto doesn't need my advice to beat Margarito. Whatever he is doing, he is doing very well. Don't try to fix something that aint broke."

Cotto has his own promotional company and puts on local shows in the country. He does not rule out the possibility of co-promoting some events with Wright in Puerto Rico.

"It is good to know that an athlete on the level of Winky Wright takes the time during his visit to Puerto Rico to come see. It shows me a lot," Cotto told Primera Hora. "Winky has always been very respectful and sportsmanlike with us."

Zahir Raheem's Antics Upset Promoter Branco Milenkovic

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

Well known South African promoter Branco Milenkovic has been upset by the antics of Zahir “The Z Man” Raheem (29-2, 17 KO’s) who is scheduled to fight Ali Funeka (29-1-2, 24 KO’s)at the Jan Smuts Stadium in East London on Saturday in a blockbuster double-header.

In the other big fight, an IBF flyweight eliminator, Australia’s Hussein Hussein (31-4, 24 KO’s) faces South African Moruti “Baby Face” Mithalane (21-1, 15 KO’s)

Shortly after he arrived in South Africa, the American who boasts of a big win over Mexican legend Erik “El Terrible” Morales gave Milenkovic problems by refusing to be weighed at his pre-fight medical examination.

Following a press conference at an East London casino, Raheem left immediately for his hotel despite the fact that he and Funeka were scheduled to weigh-in before the medical. Funeka went through the routine alone and was given a clean bill of health.

Raheem reportedly refused to cooperate even when his manager Bobby Dobbs pleaded with him. It was only when Milenkovic stepped in and threatened to cancel the title eliminator and ask the IBF to award the title shot to Funeka that Raheem returned, rather reluctantly. However, while he submitted himself to the medical, Raheem refused to have his weight checked.

Milenkovic conceded that having his weight checked at the medical was not compulsory.

Boxing writer Mesuli Zifo quoted a fuming Milenkovic as saying “I have never dealt with a fighter like this. Maybe he has forgotten how much I paid to bring him here.”

Earlier, Raheem snubbed the hotel accommodation provided by Milenkovic and checked in at a hotel of his choice along with his large entourage which included his wife Analee; his mother , brother and trainer Mark Breland a former Olympic gold medalist and WBA world welterweight champion

Donovan George Jailed For Six-Months, Career Halted

By Mark Vester

In a follow-up to a story first reported last August, rising super middleweight prospect Donovan George (15-0-1, 13KOs) was slammed with multiple felony sexual assault charges and was facing 6 to 30 years in prison if convicted. It was recently reported by the Chicago Sun Times that George pled guilty, only to the charge of aggravated battery, and began serving a six-month sentence on April 7. He was also given two-years probation.

According to published reportes, he was facing eight counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, 15 counts of criminal sexual assault and four counts of sexual relations with a family member. These were claims that were alleged to have taken place between 1996 and 1998 when George was between 11 and 13-years-old. The alleged victim in question was between 5 and 8-years-old.

It was not George's first rumble with the law. In 2004 he was convicted on two counts of a felony hate crime. He was alleged to have yelled "gay-bashing remarks" at a couple of men and a physical altercation took place. He was sentenced to 18 months probation and had to perform community service.

George, 23, last fought on the undercard of David Diaz-Erik Morales last October at the Allstate Arena in Chicago. He was signed by Top Rank and was slowly being groomed to become a future star with his punching power and boyish good looks. He should be out by the end of the year and one would expect such a young fighter to resume where his promising career left off.

Paulie Malignaggi vs Ricky Hatton this autumn

IBF Light Welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi is ‘just waiting for the final word’ before confirming his hotly anticipated fight against IBO Light Welterweight champion Ricky Hatton. In an interview with Setanta Sports News during Steve Bunce’s Boxing Hour Malignaggi said: “I’ve been watching Ricky for years and I always knew I would end up fighting him..

“I’ve heard Ricky wants to fight in Madison Square Garden, I think it would be a mega event in New York. Ultimately I guess it’s where Ricky wants to go.”

Malignaggi was quick to dismiss rumours that he had been offered ‘step-a-side’ money to make way for Manny Pacquiao. The self styled ‘Magic Man’ made it clear that Hatton was firmly in his sights.

“I’m going to fight Ricky in the fall. It’s an opportunity I’ve been waiting for.

“I think if I took step-a-side money I’d basically be selling out and not giving myself the opportunity I’ve always craved.”

Brooklyn born Malignaggi insists he learnt lessons from his lacklustre performance against Lovemore N’dou at the City of Manchester Stadium earlier in the year.

“I was trying too hard to impress everybody out there. I think I should have concentrated on impressing everyone with my performance.

“But I managed to pull out the win and I look ahead to the future.

“Believe me; I’ll redeem myself with my performance in the fall [against Hatton].”

Juan Diaz Sees Fight With Katsidis As “Do Or Die” For His Credibility

03.07.08 - By John Martinez, Ironboxing.com - In a Houston gym that felt as hot and humid as the daily temperature outside was, there was a workman like volley of punches in rapid succession finding their way onto at first a speed bag and then a heavy bag. The man responsible for the quick, rhythmic snare drum sounds on the speed bag and thudding shots to the heavy was none other than the former ruler of the lightweight division, Juan Diaz (33,1,17 KO’s).

We found Diaz in the midst of his preparations for his next assignment scheduled on September 6 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas against the very dangerous and always entertaining fighter, Michael Katsidis (23,1, 20KO’s).

The young boxer that has already experienced success in the squared circle has taken that approach to the classroom as well.. Despite having to train for a very risky opponent and in what could be a “make or break” fight for him, the former champion spent most of the morning taking his final exam in criminal justice.

Juan is coming off the experience of losing for the first time in his storied career when he saw his belts go to the current IBF and WBO lightweight champion Nate Campbell via a split decision.

Diaz said that looking back on the Campbell fight, he felt that his loss was a mixture of Nate’s skill and outside pressures leading up to the fight: especially with his very public contractual dispute with his former promoter Don King.

He said that his “ head wasn’t in the fight because of everything that Don was doing.”

“He (Don) put out 24x30 signs at the press conference saying that I stole money from him and that I was this and that and it was our last fight and it was a lot for me.”

Diaz also admitted that he didn’t expect Campbell to be so aggressive and effective as he was that night and that he failed in listening to his corner’s instruction.

“ I thought Campbell was going to come out and I would pressure him and he’d box me. But it didn’t work that way and he came right at me. I didn’t listen to my corner like I usually do either.

They kept telling me to box more and be patient, but I didn’t. They are the one’s that can see better than I can about what is going on in there. They can see it from a different angle from the outside and I’ve learned to listen from now on to Ronnie (Shields) and my corner and what they are telling me.”

Diaz sees his date with Katsidis as a “do or die” situation in regards to his boxing career.

“You know we both need a win. It’s kind of like a ‘do or die’ situation for Katsidis and myself even though we’re both great fighters. But both of us are coming off a loss and we need a win to reestablish ourselves at the lightweight division.”

“I think that a loss would set me back even more than the Campbell fight did. Another loss would take away my credibility and really hurt me.”

As we close out a year of boxing for 2008, many potentially explosive brawls are on the schedule. The Diaz/Katsidis fight is one of those fights that many believe is on the short list for possible “fight of the year”.

According to Diaz, he plans on testing the Australian puncher all night and if this is true, then this fight is a must see.

“I know that he’s (Katsidis) very aggressive. You know, a lot of these guys haven’t been taken to the limit and when we’re in that situation I’m going to test him.”

“I’m going to see if he can go toe to toe with me for twelve rounds. I know that I can go twelve.

I also know that I know how to box and that my conditioning is one of my biggest advantages too.”

“So I’m going to test him and see if he can go toe to toe for twelve rounds and if that doesn’t work, then I’ll just box him.”

With all the impending implications of the outcome in Diaz’s next fight, his demeanor was calm and focused, much like the approach that he took heading into his final exam.

Maybe that’s why he was able to ace his criminal justice test that morning as he informed me.

With one test conquered in the classroom, you can bet that the gleam in Diaz’s eye as he worked the heavy bag was also telling the on lookers that he won’t fail his test on September 6 either.

As a matter of fact, he’s doing his homework now to score another “A” that

Nonito Donaire vs. Jorge Arce Being Planned For Manila

By Ronnie Nathanielsz

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says IBF flyweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire will have a fight in Mexico in September even as Arum revealed “we are looking forward to a huge fight between him and Jorge Arce sometime in the first quarter of next year in the Philippines .”

In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Arum said he was “ working towards that with various television people. There’ll be huge, huge fights.”

Viva Sports “Main Event” boxing show panelists Dennis Principe and this commentator spoke to Donaire by overseas telephone and he welcomed the chance to move up in weight and fight Arce saying “that sounds good.”

Donaire said the one thing he wants to do is move up in weight since “there is no other challenge, I’m not going to starve myself and lose all that weight to fight as a flyweight.” Donaire said the only reason he stayed at 112 pounds was in the hope of unifying the division and getting the other belts .

However, Donaire’s claim that they only fight other Japanese is being proven by the fact that WBC champion Daisuke Naito will fight No. 13 ranked Tomonobu Shimizu and WBA champion Takefumi Sakata will face No.3 ranked Hiroyuki Hisataka in a July 30 double-header. The Japanese champions have avoided Donaire like the plague prompting him to say “I don’t care about those guys.”.

Donaire who holds both the IBF and IBO belts said his desire to get more belts “right now is very dim and its hard for me to consider it now.” He said he wants to become a champion at 115 even as he admitted that the guys at that weight “are very excellent fighters and very competitive. Each one believes that they are the best in the division and they are no afraid to fight.”

IBF Championship Committee chairman Lindsey Tucker had earlier informed Viva Sports that Donaire would fight the winner of the eliminator between No. 6 ranked Moruti “Baby Face” Mithalane and No.14 ranked Hussein Hussein which takes place in a Branco Milenkovic blockbuster promotion in East London, South Africa on July 5.

Tucker said negotiations for the Donaire mandatory title defense would have to start on July 7 and the two sides will be given thirty days to reach an agreement. If they don’t it would go to a purse bid.

Tucker’s statement came amidst plans for Donaire to move up to super flyweight for the battle against Arce and with the latest pronouncements by both Arum and Donaire it appears that the champion may opt to relinquish his IBF flyweight title.

Arum who recently signed up Donaire said he believes that next to Filipino ring idol and national treasure Manny Pacquiao, Donaire “is the best fighter out of the Philippines

Most definitely, I don't really have access to showtime though, so if anybody has links, streams, etc. It'd b appreciated.

Torres gained a fan, when I saw him fight Cotto, I don't know why he's not dominating the jr. welterweight division. So what's the history between him and Holt? they fought once, there was some kind of controversy?, but even before that they used to spar or something? Holt looks a little bigger at the press conferences.

They fought in Colombia and the crowd was throwing shit at Holt during the fight. Holt even said he got nailed with a beer can or bottle. I saw a real shitty quality of it because I couldn't find a decent copy of it but Holt was pretty much schooling him most of the fight and got clipped with a decent punch and the referee ran in and stopped. It didn't like Holt was done at all .. he just got hit good.

I don't see him dominating the division. Cotto was fighting like he wanted to prove he can out punch a puncher. Torres without a doubt can crack but he seems to have problems with people that'll try to box him up.

I didn't see the first fight either. It was in South America, Columbia I think. I'm sure you read the story (ref, crowd, bottles bieng thrown, etc).

It's going to be a good rematch. Hope it doesn't conflict with the Cote or Griffin fight on UFC.
