IT'S MONEY TIME: FLOYD MAYWEATHER FIGHTING ON SHOWTIME PAY-PER-VIEW
By Ben Thompson | February 19, 2013

Sources close to the information have informed us that HBO is out and Showtime is in as the new home for undefeated pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather, who will be defending his WBC welterweight title against an opponent yet to be named (though the likely frontrunner is interim titleist Robert Guerrero) on May 4 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. For months now, fans and media alike have been wondering who Mayweather's opponent would be. Though many assume Guerrero will indeed land the coveted assignment, what they didn't know was that Mayweather would be fighting on a new network after over a decade of fighting exclusively on HBO.

The news will no doubt send shockwaves throughout the industry. The biggest draw in the sport, Mayweather has fought exclusively for HBO during his pay-per-view career, achieving record-breaking box office success. The move signals a serious shift in power, as Showtime will now reap the benefits of having the biggest attraction in boxing fighting on their network.
Yes!!!! this is the best news I heard all year, a big fuck you to HBO!

I usually like their commentators better too.

But I don't see this as a game changer. It's not much different than Showtime signing fresh out of prison Mike Tyson to a multi fight deal.

In the end HBO still is the bigger network, has the bigger audience and has a bigger budget. Plus Floyd only fights on PPV so its not as if he was actually fighting on regular HBO.

Of course. Just like you dont need hbo to order an hbo ppv.

That's why i dont think its THAT big of a deal. I mean in will be different watching Floyd with a different fight crew, etc., but as far as changing the game, no way. PPV is PPV, doesn't matter if its hbo or Showtime you still gotta pay $60 for it at least.

Mike Tyson made the switch at the hight of his popularity and basically what that did was legitimize Showtime at the time, but it didn't hurt hbo in the long run.

Donaire put his foot in his mouth!

Is Donaire-Rigondeaux in Trouble Over Drug Testing?

by David P. Greisman

Though the fight between 122-pound titleholders Nonito Donaire and Guillermo Rigondeaux has been announced for April 13 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, the bout is potentially approaching a hurdle over the issue of drug testing.

“I am NOT going to NYC for the presser this Thursday [because] Rigo is backing off his agreement to VADA drug testing,” wrote Donaire on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon. “Rigo's team verbally agreed to VADA testing both online and in negotiations. But now that the contract to start testing is in front of them, they are finding every excuse not to sign and delay the start of the testing. I have NOT signed my fight contract yet to fight him so I have no obligation to fight ONLY HIM.

“It disappoints me that top fighters these days run from everything that will hold professional boxing integrity to its highest standard,” Donaire wrote. “I will be looking into other opponents with my manager, Cameron Dunkin, immediately.”

Donaire is the only boxer subject to year-round unannounced drug testing, which came about as a result of Donaire’s willingness and due to the cost of that testing being covered by donations to the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association.

Though Donaire has since fought other opponents who have not been subject to additional testing beyond what the athletic commissions do, he apparently is seeking to have Rigondeaux go through better testing, like him, that looks for more banned substances — and is done more often — in the weeks before their bout.
UPDATE: Ryan Songalia of RingTV.com wrote on Twitter on Tuesday evening that Rigondeaux's manager, Gary Hyde, said he will be meeting with Rigondeaux on Wednesday to sign the VADA testing agreement for the Donaire fight.

LOL @ Donaire... Didn't he say that he'll fight anyone regardless if they had anything in their system? I remerber that a while back. Donaire's skirt is being pulled up right now... HOLD UP A SEC.

FLASHBACK...

Nonito Donaire: I'll Fight Guys Who Fail Drug Tests and Beat Them!

WBO Super Bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire made news when he agreed to be the first professional boxer to undergo year round random Olympic style drug testing that will be administered by VADA (Voluntary Anti-Drug Association).

With Donaire doing drug testing all year long, one has to wonder if that will mean all his future opponents will also have to subject themselves to the random drug testing in order to secure a fight with the Filipino Flash.

When Donaire appeared on the most recent edition of BoxingScene's official radio show The Boxing Lab, he gave a surprising answer.

"The guys that I'm fighting, I will invite them to this testing [and] to prove to the world that boxing is a good sport. That we are clean and we're fair. But that's up to them to take it. I'm not going to push and instill it in them that they have to do it if they want to fight me. I'm not that type of person" revealed Donaire.

Most fighters now days have made random drug testing a prerequisite in order for a fight with them and an opponent to be possible. Floyd Mayweather who essentially pioneered random drug testing in professional boxing requires his opponent and well as himself to participate in drug testing. In fact, Austin Trout who is being considered as a possible opponent for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez said he would demand VADA administered random drug testing be agreed upon if a fight with him and Canelo were to take place.

Even more surprising than Donaire's reluctance to make random drug testing a requirement in order to fight him, he goes as far as to say he'd even still fight an opponent even if they tested positive.

"Regardless if they do test positive, I will put my life and my waiver that I will fight that guy. And I will prove to the world that I'm still better even though that guy is on it. I mean to me, they're not mandated to do a drug testing but I invite them to do it and I hope they do" stated the Filipino Flash.

Donaire's willingness to take year round drug testing is definitely commendable. Given all the recent positive drug test results we have been seeing, it's a breath of fresh air to have a fighter willing to get tested this extensively to prove he's clean. For him, he does it for those who support him and to prove you can still accomplish things and reach the top level by good old fashioned hard work.

"For me I'm doing it because I owe it to my fans. That they're supporting a guy who grew up being pushed down and let them know I made it happen because I work hard. I believe in myself and that anybody can make it happen if they work hard and be honest and do it the right way".

That article is leaving out information. Donaire said he spoke to Rigondeaux, Rigondeaux asked id Donaire is going to be tested and Rigondeaux daid he'll do it to. They verbally agreed to do it and Donaire claims rigo is backing out of it now.

Regardless Im with u, just fucking fight.

Looks like everything should be cool. Donaire probably jumping the gun on twitter without having all the facts.

Hyde sent a statement to BoxingScene on Tuesday, indicating
his boxer's willingness to agree to a random drug testing
protocol.

"Rigo has never refused to sign up for VADA testing. I asked
Top Rank lawyer Dan Pancheri today if he would send the
VADA agreement in Spanish as Rigo does not understand
English. I also asked that all substances given to Donaire by
Victor Conte be sent to us so that we could have them checked
out. I have just received the VADA agreement in Spanish and
Victor Conte has agreed to send us all substances he is giving
Donaire. Rigo will now sign the VADA agreement and Donaire
should sign the bout contract. Donaire should not put anymore
misleading posts on Twitter. Let's get it on. Rigo's time to show
the world who's boss," Hyde stated.

Bute-Pascal to fight, possibly on May 25th
Published February 19, 2013 | 18 Comments

bute2 Bute Pascal to fight, possibly on May 25thBy Jeff Sorby: Jean Pascal (27-2-1, 16 KO’s) and former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (31-1, 24 KO’s) have agreed for a fight that could take place in May, possibly on May 25th or at a later date. The fight will take place at 175, so Bute will have to move up in weight to make this happen.

It makes a lot of sense for Bute to be moving up, and staying up that weight because his chances of finding success in the weak light heavyweight division is a lot better than it is if he stays at 168.

Bute was stopped last May in the 5th round by Carl Froch, and the way that Bute was beaten suggests that the results would be the same if he fought Froch again. If Bute can’t hang with Froch, then it’s highly likely he won’t be able to hang with the likes of Andre Ward, Mikkel Kessler and Arthur Abraham.

The Bute-Pascal fight will be absolutely huge because both of these fighters typically sell out each time they fight in Montreal, and this is going to be much bigger given that they’re facing each other. They’re talking about possibly staging the fight at the Bell Centre, Olympic Stadium, or an outdoor football stadium in Quebec.

Pascal currently is scheduled to fight WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson on May 25th. Bute doesn’t have an opponent picked out for his fight, which also will be taking place on May 25th at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Both Bute and Pascal really need this fight because both of them appear to be on the downside of their careers, and this would give them a temporary bump up popularity. Bute is still good enough to be a title holder at 175, but for how long? With his shoulder problems you can’t really predict whether he’ll be able to fight too much longer.

Broner Rejects Gamboa: He's On Peds, Clean Your Piss

By Bill "Two Scoops" Emes

WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22KOs) has no interest in a fight with Yuriorkis Gamboa (22-0, 16KOs) - unless the Cuban Olympic gold medal winner clears his name from the recent controversy that linked him to a Miami lab that was allegedly distributing performance enhancing drugs to dozens of top athletes. Gamboa was the only boxer linked to the lab.
Broner vs. Gamboa is a very anticipated match. Broner moved up to the lightweight division last year and captured the WBC championship with a TKO of Antonio DeMarco. He returned on Saturday night and retained that title with a fifth round TKO victory over Gavin Rees. Gamboa plans to move up to 135-pounds by his next fight, although Broner could soon move to 140.

"Yuriorkis Gamboa is fighting PEDs. He's on PEDs. I don't want to hear about Yuriorkis Gamboa. Tell him to go get his piss cleaned and then he can come talk to Adrien Broner. Other than that he's done," Broner said.

Adrien Broner: Nobody At 140 Would Pose A Problem

WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22KOs) is seriously considering a a move to 140-pounds as early as his next fight. Broner is hoping to fight WBO champion Ricky Burns, but he won't wait around for the match.

Broner doesn't see any of the top names in the junior welterweight division - including Brandon Rios, Amir Khan, Danny Garcia and Juan Manuel Marquez - who would pose a problem for him.

Broner retained his WBC title for the first time on Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, with a fifth round stoppage of British challenger Gavin Rees.

"I'm not going to wait on Ricky Burns. If he fights [me] or doesn't fight [me], oh well. Nobody [poses a challenge for me] at 140. I'll make them all look the same. I'll fight them all different. Different strokes for different folks," Broner said.

Mickey Bey Jr. tests positive
Updated: February 19, 2013, 9:10 PM ET
By Dan Rafael | ESPN.com

Unbeaten lightweight Mickey Bey Jr., who knocked out Robert Rodriguez in a nationally televised bout earlier this month, has tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone, the Nevada State Athletic Commission said Tuesday.

Nevada commission executive director Keith Kizer said Bey's testosterone to epitestosterone ratio (T/E) was greater than 30-1. Nevada allows a ratio of 6-1.

Rafael's Boxing Blog

Rafael Get the latest scoop and analysis on the world of boxing from ESPN.com's Dan Rafael in his blog.

Kizer said Bey's T/E ratio was the second-highest ever in Nevada history, with another fighter once having a ratio of more than 60-1. Elevated testosterone suggests steroid usage.

"A complaint for disciplinary action has been filed against Mr. Bey," Kizer said.

He added that Bey, who knocked out Rodriguez in the third round Feb. 2 at the Cosmopolitan casino in Las Vegas, likely will have a hearing before the commission in April.

"The commission will decide then on any discipline, including making the bout a no contest," Kizer said.

Bey faces up to a one-year suspension and could be fined up to the entirety of his $8,000 purse, Kizer said.

Bey (19-0-1, 10 KOs), 30, of Cleveland, was a standout amateur and a hot prospect but has been plagued by inactivity. He was fighting for the first time in 15 months following a split from promoter Top Rank. He had signed with Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s promotional company and was being trained by Floyd Mayweather Sr. for the fight with Rodriguez.

Kizer said all of the other fighters on the card tested negative for banned substances.

got damn 30-1 he makes the reem looks bad

Broner-Rees seen by 1.4 million viewers on HBO
February 20th, 2013 | Post Comment

Broner Rees Broner vs. Rees gavin rees adrien broner By Scott Gilfoid: HBO may have lost Floyd Mayweather Jr. to Showtime/CBS this week, but they have a capable replacement with the talented WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s), who drew monster numbers for his fight against the UK’s Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 18 KO’s) last Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. Those numbers weren’t because of Rees that’s for sure because few U.S fans had ever heard of him. Rees was seen by many as just another lamb being led to the slaughter for Broner.

The Broner vs. Rees fight was viewed by an incredible 1.4 million viewers on HBO with a peak of 1.551 million, according to Steve Kim. Wow, that is very impressive. Broner is tentatively scheduled to fight on Mayweather’s undercard on May 4th. It’s unclear if that’s going to happen because Broner is fighting for HBO, so my guess is that’s going to keep him being able to fight on the card.

Broner is in the fast lane in terms of being on the path to pay per view riches. It took Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao years before they became PPV stars. Mayweather didn’t become a PPV attraction until he was in his 13th year as a pro, and Pacquiao didn’t until his 11th. Broner is in his 5th year as a pro, and he’s well ahead of the two.

It helps that Broner has the Mayweather fighting style because boxing fans really like this style. Broner’s cockiness and personality is perfect for making him a quick PPV star. The shy reserved types just don’t interest American boxing fans. You’ve got to have the personality and plus the talent to back it up for Americans to want to pay to see you. Broner has both, and he likely will be taking over for Mayweather with HBO PPV by the end of this year if not sooner.

What Broner needs is a decent opponent for him to fight so that he can interest fans. He’s kind of stuck in a bad place fighting at lightweight because the talent level in the division is so mediocre. Up until recently, the perceived best fighter in the division was Antonio DeMarco, and Broner obliterated him easily in November of last year in an 8th round stoppage win for the young talent. Now there’s just nobody left for Broner to whip.

Amir Khan vs. Julio Diaz possible for April 27th on Showtime
February 19th, 2013 | Post Comment

Khan Diaz Khan vs. Diaz julio diaz amir khan By Dan Ambrose: A fight between former two-time IBF lightweight champion Julio Diaz (40-7-1, 29 KO’s) and Amir Khan (27-3, 19 KO’s) is possible for April 27th on Showtime on the undercard of the Zab Judah vs. Danny Garcia fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, according to Steve Kim. Stephen Espinoza of Showtime says the Khan-Diaz fight is being considered for the card.

However, it won’t be the main event. In fact, if the fight takes on the card, it’ll be on the undercard beneath the Peter Quillin vs. Fernando Guerrero middleweight match-up. In other words, it’ll be the third fight on the card in what would be a triple-header.

Khan’s team were reportedly targeting 32-year-old former WBC lightweight champion Humberto Soto, but he failed to take the fight.

Diaz, 33, was at one time a very good lightweight, and he twice held the International Boxing Federation title. He eventually grew out of the division, and had to move up first to light welterweight and now welterweight. Diaz has done a decent job for the most part, beating the 2nd tier opposition he’s been in with. He beat Herman Ngoudjo in 2010 by a 10 round decision. Ngoudjo used to be a major player at 140 at one time many years ago.

In Diaz’s last fight he fought Shawn Porter to a 10 round draw last December. Diaz has struggled, though, when facing quality fighters, as we saw with him getting knocked out in the 3rd round by Kendall Holt in May 2011. Diaz has also suffered losses to Rolando Reyes, Victor Cayo and Juan Diaz.

This is a step up from Khan’s last opponent Carlos Molina, but not much of one. Diaz isn’t ranked at all at welterweight, so Showtime isn’t getting a whole lot for their money for this fight. This is Khan’s second fight of his three-fight contract with Showtime. Having Khan on the undercard of the Garcia-Judah fight will help attract interest in a Khan vs. Garcia rematch later on in 2013.

It’s just too bad that a better opponent can’t be found for Khan because this fight won’t be competitive. Diaz beats 2nd tier guys, but struggles when he faces guys that can fight. Showtime wants to televise the Khan-Garcia rematch, and by letting Khan take an easy fight against Julio Diaz instead of pushing him fight someone that’s actually relevant at 140 or 147, it increases the chances that Khan will win and be available to fight Garcia again.

Julio Diaz is a second tier/non-top 15 ranked welterweight, and probably a safe pick for Khan. He won’t be able to dent Khan’s chin because Diaz didn’t carry his power up from lightweight. He’s someone that Khan can beat and look good against, in other words.

Canelo-Trout NOT a done deal, Schaefer has 3 other possibilities for Canelo
February 19th, 2013 | Post Comment

Alvarez Trout Alvarez vs. Trout saul alvarez austin trout By Dan Ambrose: The May 4th fight between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) and WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) is not a done deal, according to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. He has three other opponents that he’s considering for Canelo on that date in addition to Trout, according to Steve Kim.

Schaefer told ESPN “It is not done, it is not signed. There are other possibilities we are looking at for Canelo.”

Trout is still the leading guy, but it looks like Schaefer has some other guys available in case the Trout-Canelo fight doesn’t get made. Stephen Espinoza thinks the fight can be made, but there’s obviously something that is holding up the negotiations.

It would be a lucky break for Canelo if the Trout fight doesn’t take place because it might just save him from suffering his first loss of his career. Schaefer hasn’t sounded excited about the Canelo-Trout fight, and you can understand why.

Golden Boy has been so careful with the kinds of opponents they put in with Canelo during his career, often matching him with welterweights instead of junior middleweights, and putting him in with a number of aging way past their best fighters.

Canelo makes good money for them even with him facing less than spectacular opposition. This could probably go on like this for many years without the boxing public grumbling about it. But if Canelo faces Trout on May 4th, there’s a good chance Canelo will get badly beaten and exposed.

Then the question comes into play whether Golden Boy can sell Canelo as a PPV attraction after a bad loss to Trout. I think they can, but it’ll take a little longer, and Canelo will likely have to be put back in a diet of welterweights to build him back up. I think Schaefer wouldn’t be displeased if the Canelo vs. Trout fight doesn’t happen on May 4th because of the risk of Canelo’s money making potential stalling if he gets beaten.

Hearn: Broner-Rees probably sold less than 2,000 tickets
February 20th, 2013 | Post Comment

Broner Rees Broner vs. Rees gavin rees adrien broner By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport Promoter Eddie Hearn sounded disappointed with the turnout for the fight between his fighter Gavin Rees (37-2-1, 18 KO’s) and WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) last Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

Rees was blown out in five one-sided rounds before Ree’s trainer Gary Lockett sailed a white towel into the ring in the 5th to save his fighter when Broner was really giving it to him after having knocked him down with a beautiful left hand to the body.

The next day, a not so happy-sounding Hearn complained bitterly about the U.S crowd turnout for the fight not being big, which Hearn estimates that there were less than 2,000 tickets sold. There’s no doubt those would be horrible numbers for a star like Broner if true.

Hearn said to I Film London “People are talking about the new pound-for-pound rising star Broner, but there was probably less than 2,000 tickets sold last night. It tells you that the sport in America isn’t doing what it’s doing in the UK.”

It appears Hearn’s crowd estimation was a tad bit off, as the numbers I’m hearing for the fight is 4,800 tickets sold. That’s a respectable number for a Broner fight. It’s not 10,000 fans, but it’s still a very, very good turnout for a talent like Broner. But the 1.4 million views on HBO of the Broner vs. Rees fight are really good numbers because those numbers outdid the Saul Alvarez vs. Josesito Lopez fight on Showtime, which had slightly more than 1 million views. If Broner is able to surpass a popular fighter like Canelo, then that suggests that Broner is going to be a huge PPV star in the near future.

Hearn seems to be spoiled from the recent fight between Carl Frampton vs. Kiko Martinez in Belfast, Northern Ireland. That fight had a crowd of 9,000, and they really loud. Of course, going from that to a fight with a crowd half the size it’s going to seem like a dramatic difference to Hearn.

I honestly think Broner’s fight would have had a much better turn out if Broner had faced someone relevant and well known instead of the obscure Rees. This is on Golden Boy. They picked out Rees despite the fact that only the hardcore boxing fans knew who he was. When you foolish things like then of course it’s going to hurt the gate in a major way, but that’s not on Broner. 4,800 is incredibly good given what Broner had to work with in terms of an opponent.
