Sechew Powell Fails Drug Test in Latimore Aftermath

By Mark Vester

It's been reported that New York-based junior middleweight Sechew Powell failed his post-fight drug test in the aftermath of his shocking loss to Deandre Latimore last week on ESPN. Powell was on the verge of landing a major title shot when he was stopped by Latimore in the seventh-round of the fight.

Warriors Boxing [Powell's promoter] told Dan Rafael that Powell tested positive for marijuana and received a 60-day suspension from the New York State Athletic Commission.

Powell was the mandatory challenger to junior middleweight champion Verno Phillips and some questioned whether he took Latimore fight serious. He appeared to be out of shape in the fight and seemed to tire after a few rounds.

Khan vs Gomez: Gomez admits to mind games

Michael Gomez has declared himself ‘ready to go to war’ against Commonwealth lightweight champion Amir Khan this Saturday at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. Gomez dismissed rumours that Khan’s former trainer Oliver Harrison had helped him prepare for the fight. Speaking to Setanta Sports News during Steve Bunce’s Boxing Hour Gomez said: “There was a rumour started by Michael Gomez just to get under his [Khan's] skin. What can Oliver Harrison teach Michael Gomez?

“Nobody can improve me. I’ll be staying with my trainer Bobby Rimmer. We want the praise, us, me and Bobby Rimmer, because we’re the one’s that have done it.”

Gomez goes into the fight as the underdog but is firmly focused on the job in hand, unlike his opponent.

“Amir Khan’s talking about after this fight; about Ned Campbell, about Gavin Rhys. Michael Gomez is thinking about Amir Khan. And when I stop thinking about Amir Khan, I start thinking about Amir Khan.

“June 21st is all that matters, not afterwards. Come June 22nd every household in Great Britain will know the name Michael Gomez

Oscar De La Hoya donates $3.5 million to Green Dot Public Schools

LOS ANGELES) - June 20, 2008 - Green Dot Public Schools, the largest charter school organization in Los Angeles, announced Thursday that Ten-Time World Champion boxer, Oscar De La Hoya, donated $3.5 million to fund his namesake Oscar De La Hoya Ánimo Charter High School and additional Green Dot schools.. De La Hoya presented this gift to Green Dot Public Schools at the commencement ceremony of the Oscar De La Hoya Ánimo Charter High School on Thursday, June 19th. The ceremony took place at Sullivan Field at the Loyola Marymount University campus.

De La Hoya, whose foundation is dedicated to helping underprivileged families in East Los Angeles, has been actively involved with his namesake school since its inception in 2003 and delivered the commencement speech last year to the first-ever graduating class. De La Hoya is a strong believer in supporting the community and often visits the school to encourage the students to study hard and dream big.

“Growing up in East Los Angeles, I know how important it is to keep a positive attitude and to stay focused on your goals,” said De La Hoya. “I’m so proud of these students. Every one of them deserves a quality education and I’m honored to help them realize their dreams! This is a landmark day for everyone involved with Oscar De La Hoya Ánimo Charter High School and I’m thrilled to be building a new school in my hometown.”

Green Dot has founded and is in the process of building Oscar De La Hoya Ánimo Charter High School and sixteen other Green Dot high schools, including several new schools representing the re-structured Locke High School in Watts. Green Dot schools offer quality education facilities to Los Angeles communities faced with educational, social and economic adversity. Last year, 92% of the seniors at Oscar De La Hoya Ánimo graduated and 71% of those students were accepted to four-year universities. Students from this year’s graduating class are expected to go on to four-year universities including: University of California Los Angeles, University of California Davis, University of California Berkeley, University of California Irvine and many others.

“Oscar De La Hoya has been an amazing source of inspiration to Green Dot since its inception,” added Steve Barr, founder and CEO of Green Dot Public Schools. “With his generosity and goodwill, so many gifted students have been granted the opportunity to obtain a safe, quality education and a chance to succeed in life. With De La Hoya’s current donation, we will be able to continue to build schools that will ensure all kids receive a quality education for years to come.”

The success of the Green Dot schools, whose students score on average 113 points higher than Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) high schools on the state of California’s Academic Performance Index, is credited to the “Six Tenets” school model. The “Six Tenets of High Performing Public Schools” calls for schools to: 1) be safer and no larger than 500 students each; 2) implement a college preparatory curriculum for all students; 3) empower principals, teachers, parents and students to own all key decisions related to budgets, curriculum and hiring; 4) add more dollars to classrooms and significantly increase teacher pay; 5) value and support parent participation; 6) stay open later for community use.

By implementing this model, Green Dot has produced incredible results, helping students close the achievement gap, graduate from high school and attend four-year colleges. Oscar De La Hoya Ánimo is ranked among the top 10% of high schools in the state of California that serve similar communities.

There aren't a lot of people out there for him to fight. If you were naming a ton of fighters, then we could have a topic. But you are only naming 1.

Who should he fight? Pavlik? Why? Because Pavlik beat Miranda and Taylor?
This makes no sense to me at all...

Because he's the undisputed undefeated middleweight champion of the world, and is only a few pounds away from where Calzaghe fights at, and most of all...because he wants to fight him and probably stands the best chance out of anyone left.

James Kirkland Breaks Promotional Ties With Gary Shaw

By Mark Vester

We reported several days ago that flyweight champion Nonito Donaire severed his promotional contract with Gary Shaw, now undefeated junior middleweight prospect James Kirkland is also jumping ship. Both fighters have the same claim, that Shaw breached their promotional contracts by not keeping them busy enough.

Shaw was working on placing Kirkland on HBO on October 4 as part of triple-header with Alfredo Angulo and Yuriorkis Gamboa. Kirkland impressed HBO bigwigs with his recent outing on the network and they are said to be interested in having him back. With the recent development, his appearance on the Oct. 4 card probably won't happen.

Cameron Dunkin, who manages both fighters, told Dan Rafael that Shaw owed them fights and he needs to get them somewhere to keep them active. Due to Dunkin's close ties with Top Rank, both fighters will probably land under their banner.

"[Shaw] was behind on fights for both of them and they were not staying busy," Dunkin said. "One is a world champion and one is a very hot prospect and they need to fight. We really need to get these kids somewhere to keep them more active. They both wanted to fight and they were both unhappy

8 pounds is a lot in boxing, but I'm sure Pav wouldn't have a problem making it, at all. He's got the room for it. Let's see what happens after the RJJ fight, and Pav defending 1 more time. Just hope Calzaghe doesn't retire after the RJJ fight. I'd like to see it as well...

Recieved the actual tickets to the fight on July 26th. Blank envelope, I was thinking who the hell is this from? Almost ripped it in half without even opening it! I open it up, and BAM...there they are :)

don't have shobox, so let me know if it's worth downloading.

BTW did you watch friday night fights? There was a Taylor/Chavez moment on the co-feature event, except with a happier ending.Cortez was the ref, I bet he was thinking Taylor/Chavez the entire time (except this didn't have the importance obviously).

FUCKING RIGHT!

I'm a big Chambers fan. Dude could've beat Povetkin had he just kept throwing punches. For some reason he gave up mid fight and sat back. Damn I wish they would've shown that fight .. hopefully it aired in the UK and it'll get ripped later on.
