Kelly Pavlik arrested on DUI charge, released on bond

CANFIELD, Ohio - Former boxing champ Kelly Pavlik is free on bond after being arrested for a DUI late Wednesday night.

According to an arrest report, Pavlik allegedly hit a lamp post and telephone pole with a green ATV before driving home. When officers came to investigate, Pavlik's friend Daniel Ferreri said he had been the one in the ATV. Pavlik intervened however, yelling obscenities at the cops, who suspected the boxer to be intoxicated, and demanding them to leave.

Ferreri eventually said that Pavlik was the one who drove the ATV. Ferreri was then arrested for obstruction of justice and after refusing a series of sobriety tests, Pavlik was arrested as well.

Pavlik was booked on charges of driving under the influence, failing to stop after an accident, and failing to maintain control of his vehicle.

Jail records indicate that Pavlik was released on bond around 2:00 a.m.

His arraignment is set for Friday in Canfield at The Mahoning County Municipal Court.

Orlando Salido-Juan Manuel Lopez II Likely For March 31st In Puerto Rico

James Slater: When featherweights Juan Manuel Lopez and Orlando Salido met back in April of this year, Lopez was an unbeaten upcoming star who was defending the WBO title. Today, in light of Salido’s big upset stoppage win, it is the Mexican who is the champ, “Juanma’s” stock has fallen at least a little.

The “repeat or revenge” match looks set to take place (according to Fightnews and Boxrec) on March 31st in Lopez’ homeland of Puerto Rico, the scene of the first fight. 31-year-old Salido, 37-11-2(25) has enjoyed two wins since the biggest night of his pro career: one title retention against Kenichi Yamaguchi (WTKO11) and, last time out on Dec. 17th, an up from the floor non-title win over Weng Haya (WTKO8, Salido going down in the 3rd and 4th rounds).

28-year-old Lopez, 31-1(28) has fought just once since losing his belt and perfect record: a quick, 2nd-round blast out of Mike Oliver in October. Both guys will be determined to win the return - Lopez to prove the loss was a fluke, Salido to prove it wasn’t; but it must be said how the older man looked surprisingly vulnerable against Haya. Can the powerful southpaw known as Juanma get his revenge by way of KO next March?

A hugely intriguing fight, the loser of this one will have to take a big step back; especially if it’s Lopez. Two losses to the same guy can be devastating, and if Lopez were to lose again to Salido the stardom he wants and the massive fights he wants would fall by the wayside. I think the pressure will be on Lopez come March 31st, too.

Having home advantage will possibly prove to be a big factor in Lopez’ favour. Salido did say that in a return fight he would want to see Lopez travel to Mexico. Instead, the reigning and defending WBO 126-pound champ has to travel once again. “Siri” has boxed in Puerto Rico twice before, however, and it didn’t bother his performance either time. We can expect another tough fight for both men next year.

When they met this past April, Salido scored a 2011 Upset Of The Year candidate, with the fight also being a hugely exciting affair. In the return, I feel Lopez will get his revenge - by mid-rounds stoppage - in yet another thriller.

Carl Froch: Ward is Not Exciting, Fights are Quite Boring

http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&opt=printable&id=47712#ixzz1hTtYlnyJ

By Edward Chaykovsky

Former champion Carl Froch respects Andre Ward as a fighter. He admits Ward's style is very difficult to beat and probably nobody at 168-pounds will defeat the WBC/WBA king. Last Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, Ward beat Froch with a twelve round unanimous decision to win the Super Six tournament and unified the WBA/WBC titles at super middleweight.

But, Froch doesn't consider Ward's style as being exciting enough to build a huge following among the boxing fans. Froch believes that his own style of fighting is the reason why promoters for Mikkel Kessler and Lucian Bute are trying to secure his services for major fights events in 2012.

"Nobody is going to want to fight Andre Ward, because he's so good technically at what he does, and he gets away with what he does technically. He's either too far away and you can't hit him or he's in close and smothering your work. He keeps himself out of harm's way and he deserves credit for that," Froch told UK Daily.

"But, he's not exciting or does any 'edge of your seats' stuff, so I don't think the Americans are too happy [with his fights] from the feedback that I'm getting. Now I see why he doesn't have a massive fanbase because you're not going to reset your DVD and rewind it to watch him again. And that's what I've found from watching [him] myself. It's quite boring. It's not entertaining stuff. But it's effective and [his style] was effective against me."

Team Martinez Never Made a Chavez Deal With The WBC

http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&opt=printable&id=47725#ixzz1hTtqsIRs

Lou DiBella, promoter of middleweight Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27KOs), advised BoxingScene.com that nobody from Team Martinez, including the fighter, made an agreement with the WBC to allow Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31KOs) to defend his middleweight title on February 4th against Marco Antonio Rubio.

The WBC's President, Jose Sulaiman, reached out to Martinez, but contrary to published reports no agreement was ever made. At the recent convention in Las Vegas, the WBC ordered Chavez Jr. to defend his title against Martinez, the organization's Diamond champion. Martinez has a return date of March 17th.

"It's Christmas Eve and I don't want to start calling people liars. There was never any agreement. It's all bulls**t. We knew the WBC was going to sanction that fight. Jose Sulaiman called my fighter directly, and I have to question that, and Sergio told him that he had to speak with me and [adviser] Sampson [Lewkowicz].

Arum To Present Cotto, Bradley, Marquez To Pacquiao

http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&opt=printable&id=47726#ixzz1hTuHiGeX

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum informed the Manila Bulletin that he plans to present three possible options to Manny Pacquiao for a posssible defense of the WBO welterweight title in either April or May. Arum plans to meet with Pacquiao in the first week of January in Los Angeles. The short list, according to Arum, are Juan Manuel Marquez (53-6-1, 39KOs), unbeaten WBO 140-pound champion Timothy Bradley (28-0, 12KOs) and WBC 154-pound champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30KOs).

Pacquiao stopped Cotto in the twelfth round of a 2009 welterweight bout, fought at a catch-weight of 145-pounds. Cotto, now with a new trainer and refocused, believes he would beat Pacquiao in a rematch. Marquez fought Pacquiao three times, in three close fights, which includes a twelve round majority decision loss in November.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. “is out of the picture” says Arum, after Wednesday's court hearing in Las Vegas - where Mayweather was sentenced to 90 days in jail for a domestic abuse charge. With good behavior, the boxer could be released in early March.

“It’s all up to Manny,” said Arum. “But I’d like him to fight in the spring."

Arum would still like to stage Mayweather-Pacquiao in 2012, possibly in November.

Team bute: Ward is Not ready

http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&opt=printable&id=47744#ixzz1hUXNQLTh

By Edward Chaykovsky

The president of Sportscene and InterBox, Jean Bédard, made it very clear - IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute will not chase after, or wait around, for a unification with Super Six tournament winner Andre Ward. After Ward recently decisioned Carl Froch to unify the WBA/WBC titles, he was challenged by Bute. Bedard was advised by Ward's promoter, Dan Goossen, of their intentions to pursue other opportunities.

"Ward and his promoter were clear, he is looking for a an easier fight and he is not ready for Lucian. We are certainly not going to run after him all year. We have other options," Bedard said.

While Ward (25-0, 13 KOs) is out of the mix, the most likely option right now is Carl Froch (28-2, 20 KOs). Bute (30-0, 24 KOs) and his team are interested in facing Froch as soon as possible.

Another Fighter Goes To Jail, As Amir “Hardcore” Mansour Get 14-Months For Violation Of Probation

By James Slater: Unbeaten heavyweight contender Amir Mansour is no way near as well known as Floyd Mayweather Junior, but the 39-year-old southpaw known as “Hardcore” is, like Mayweather, going to prison. In fact, Mansour is going back to prison.

As has been reported on Delawareonline.com, Mansour received a 14-month sentence this past Friday, for three violations of his probation. Mansour served time in prison from 2001 to 2010 for a drug possession felony. Upon being released, the amazingly well-conditioned heavyweight got back in the ring and proceeded to scored seven straight wins, improving his record to 16-0(12).

A lot of the hard work has now been undone due to the latest illegal activity of Mansour. According to the news piece, Mansour thrice violated his probation by: illegally leaving the district he lives in without permission, possessing a controlled substance, and associating with a person who has been convicted of a felony.

According to the article, Mansour was living in a house where another felon was residing and drugs as well as ammunition were found there.

“He plans to work hard to try for the earliest possible release, the earliest possible return to training and the earliest possible return to his family and his boxing career,” Mansour’s manager Keith Stoffer said.

With time not on his side (Amir will turn 40 next July), Mansour’s chances of achieving his goal of becoming world champion look a slim. 14-months is a long time for a boxer, and the new jail time will likely convince many fans that Mansour is finished at anything like top level.

Last fighting on the 2nd of this month, with a 6th-round TKO over Epfiano Mendoza, Mansour was steadily working his way up the world rankings. Now, however, it is possible the heavyweight will not fight again until 2013.

Ward wants Kessler rematch; still says Bute has to earn fight

By Sean McDaniel: WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (25-0, 13 KO’s) wants to face Mikkel Kessler in 2012 to prove to boxing fans that his win over him two years ago was a legitimate victory. Ward also states that he’s serious about wanting IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute to prove himself by beating some A level fighters.

Ward is willing to wait for all of 2012 if h has to while Bute faces and hopefully beats some A level fighters to meet Ward’s requirements. Ward doesn’t mind waiting and is more concerned with ensuring that Bute has proven himself adequately before he goes through the trouble to fight him.

The Kessler fight is one that obviously won’t be Ward’s first fight in 2012, because Kessler is already tied up with a fight against Robert Stieglitz in April and won’t be available to fight Ward until later in the year. Ward’s mandatory challenger is unbeaten Anthony Dirrell and that’s likely going to be the opponent that Ward will be meeting next in early 2012. Ward also would like to fight Carl Froch again but that fight will hinge on whether Froch can get through his two proposed fight against Bute in one piece and if he can get by Kessler, if he opts to fight Kessler again. Froch is no good to Ward if he gets beaten by Kessler or Bute.

Ward says he may move up to the light heavyweight division after he completely cleans out the super middleweight division, but that’s not going to happen a little while yet. Ward still has Bute, Kessler and the Dirrell brothers to beat before he’s defeated all the best fighters at super middleweight.

The WBC won’t be taking Mayweather’s title away

By Chris Williams: The World Boxing Council reportedly won’t be stripping welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. while he’s in jail for 90 days starting in January 6th in Clark County for a domestic abuse charge.

The WBC, according to their rules, is supposed to strip champions of their WBC titles when they’re in jail. However, the WBC will go ahead back Mayweather and not take his title away in this case.

It’s kind of an easy choice for the WBC, though, because Mayweather is a huge star and the WBC would be shooting themselves in the foot to strip Mayweather of his title and miss out on the expensive sanctioning fees they can get when he fights.

Mayweather wouldn’t be hurt in the least even if the WBC did strip him of his title, because he doesn’t need a title to be recognized by boxing fans as being one of the best fighters in the sport. Titles are important for the lesser known fighters, but once a guy has built a name for himself like Mayeather, titles really don’t matter.

They actually hurt the more popular fighters more than help because it binds them to the organization and periodically forces them to fight less than popular fighters for mandatory defenses.

Currently, the WBC #1 contender is Devon Alexander and the #2 is Selcuk Aydin. Mayweather will need to lose this strap at some point when the WBC tries to force him to fight either of these guys because they’re not going to be big fights for Mayweather. He’s better dumping the belt when the times for him to have to fight one of them.Neither of them are huge stars and it just doesn’t make sense to keep the belt if he’s forced to fight one of them eventually.

Broner makes first defense against Perez

By Allen Fox: WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (22-0, 18 KO’s) makes his first defense of his title on February 25th against unbeaten #2 ranked contender Eloy Perez (23-0-2, 7 KO’s) at the Scottrade Center in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Broner, 22, will be sporting a substantial speed and power advantage against the light hitting Perez. Indeed, Broner is the much faster and stronger fighter in this bout and it’s hard to see Perez doing much in this fight unless he can come up with some power and speed he hasn’t yet shown.

Perez, 25, is taking a huge step up in class at the same time and that is going to be a problem as well for him. Perez has been toiling away beating the likes of little known fighters Alejandro Rodriguez, Daniel Jimenez and Ira Terry in the past year, while Broner has faced and beaten Daniel Ponce De Leon, Jason Litzau and Vincente Maria Rodrgiuez.

The competition levels that the two fighters have faced are incredibly far apart. Perez has been coddled with weak opposition and Broner has been put in tough. This is going to be a bit of a shock for Perez when he sees how much better Broner is compared to his previous opposition when the fight starts in the 1st round. Maybe Perez can make some adjustments but I doubt it.

If he tries to open up with his offense, he’s going to be creating huge opportunities for the counter punching Broner to take advantage by landing his big counters. I’d be surprised if Perez can make it the full 12.

I just can’t see it. Perez will get desperate and will walk into one of Broner’s sneaky right hands or left hooks and get dropped. Once Broner has Perez hurt, it will be over quickly because he’s a great finisher.
